P4 » » SUNSET SUNDAY 7.27 PM SUNRISE MONDAY 5:23 AM » SUNDAY | 1 JUNE 2025 | JALANDHAR INBRIEF MOTORCYCLIST INJURED, HIT BY CAR Phagwara: In a road accident that took place on Saturday morning, a motorcyclist sustained critical injuries after being hit by a car and subsequent fall from a railway bridge near Lovely Professional University (LPU) on the Jalandhar-Phagwara route. The injured has been identified as Onkar Singh, a resident of village Pachranga in district Jalandhar. According to preliminary information, Singh was travelling on his motorcycle from Jalandhar towards Phagwara when an unidentified car collided with his twowheeler near the LPU stretch. As of now, the identity of the car driver remains unknown. Local police are investigating the incident and reviewing nearby CCTV footage to trace the vehicle involved. OC YOUTH RUN OVER BY TRAIN Phagwara: A tragic accident occurred near the Phagwara railway station late on Thursday night when a young boy was fatally struck by a moving train while attempting to cross the tracks. The deceased has been identified as Sunny, a resident of Rattanpura locality in Phagwara. According to preliminary information, the incident took place when Sunny was crossing the railway line and failed to notice the approaching train in time. Eyewitnesses stated that he was alone at the time of the mishap. The body was taken to the local civil hospital for a postmortem examination, which was conducted earlier today. The GRP has registered a case and initiated further investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. OC MOTORCYCLE STOLEN Phagwara: A motorcycle was stolen from outside a paying guest (PG) accommodation in the village of Miherru near Phagwara on Thursday night. The stolen vehicle, bearing registration number HP-28V3764, belonged to Prashant Thakur, a native of Himachal Pradesh who is currently residing in the PG facility for educational purposes. According to the complaint filed by Thakur at the local police station, the motorcycle was parked outside the PG premises as usual. When he came out in the morning, he found the vehicle missing. After making inquiries in the neighbourhood and checking nearby CCTV footage proved to be of no avail, he approached the police.The Phagwara police have registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC for theft and are currently investigating. Efforts are being made to trace the vehicle through surveillance and technical inputs. OC MAN BOOKED FOR BIGAMY, FRAUD Phagwara: A man has been booked by the police for allegedly marrying a woman while concealing the fact that he was already married and subsequently defrauding her of valuable jewellery and cash. The accused, identified as Manak, a resident of Moga district, reportedly married the complainant, Parwinder Kaur, a resident of Krishanpura locality in Phagwara, under false pretence. Based on her complaint, a case has been registered under Sections 420 (cheating) and 494 (bigamy) of the IPC. The police are investigating the matter. However, no arrests have been made as of yet. OC MLA Raman Arora’s son applies for anticipatory bail week after his arrest Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May31 Almost a week after the Vigilance Bureau had arrested Jalandhar Central MLA Raman Arora in an alleged case of corruption, his son Rajan Arora too has applied for anticipatory bail. He is on the run since the MLA’s arrest and the bail application will be heard in the local court on June 4. It is being alleged that Rajan Arora was helping his father build up proceeds of crime. He has already been booked under FIR no. 23 of VB, Jalandhar Range, in which Raman Arora, Assistant Town Planner of Municipal Corporation, Sukhdev Vashisht, Building Inspector Harpreet Kaur and Arora’s aide Mahesh Makhija have been arrested. Meanwhile, an audio which is purportedly a call recording between Raman Arora and a local trader, went viral on Saturday. Arora is heard saying that they were not aware that ‘samaan’ (which supposedly is the cash) had reached him but he need not worry now and that he would convey about the same. Reacting on the viral audio, Arora’s lawyer Darshan Dyal said, “We do not know what this audio is about. It is so far not a part of the case and the VB has not shared anything on it with us.” Arora’s aide and arhtiya at the local vegetable market, Manish Makhija, who had been arrested yesterday by the VB, was produced in a local court late last evening. The VB had sought his remand for a week but the court granted his custody for four days. It has been alleged that a bag containing Rs 29 lakh in cash had been recovered by the investigating agency from his place after his arrest. VB arrests CA for accepting Rs 10 lakh bribe The Vigilance Bureau (VB) had on Friday arrested Gursewak Singh, Chartered Accountant (CA), red-handed for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh on behalf of a CGST officer posted at Jalandhar. The arrest was made following a complaint made by a firm owner, who is a resident of Jalandhar. The complainant had reportedly approached the VB alleging that the Chartered Accountant (CA) had demanded Rs 30 lakh from him on behalf of the above said CGST officer as bribe for benefiting him in an inquiry being conducted under the CGST Act against his firm. The spokesperson further added that after a preliminary verification of this complaint, the VB flying squad laid a trap during which the accused CA was arrested redhanded while he was receiving Rs 10 lakh as the first installment of bribe from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. FIR No. 17 has been registered against the accused under Sections 7 and 7A of Prevention of Corruption Act and under Section 61(2) of BNS at VB police station, Flying Squad-1, at Mohali. Sewerage workers resume Mock drill conducted work after seven-day strike Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, May 31 The Sewerman Union, which had been on strike since May 24 in the city, has returned to work following assurances from officials and the government that their next salary will be increased. The union members resumed work by clearing the blocked sewerage in Premgarh. Union leader Pradhan Naresh Kumar informed that they have been assured their salary will be raised to Rs 25,000. He warned that if they receive less than this amount, the union will be compelled to resume their struggle. If the salary demand is met, they will then decide on their next strategy to press for permanent employment status. The union members also cautioned that if they face harassment this time, they will not remain silent and will escalate their fight at the Punjab level. During the event, President of the Safai Karamchari Federation Raja Hans and Presi- dent of the Outsourced Employees Union Kamal Bhatti expressed support, stating that the sewermen’s demands are legitimate and the government has a duty to meet them. They thanked the union for deciding to return to work after understanding the city residents’ problems. However, they warned that if the government fails to fulfil the promise of a salary increase, all unions will unite in protest, holding the corporation officials and the government responsible. The company has already started online booking for the flight with introductory base price of the ticket kept for Adampur-Mumbai flight at Rs 5660 and return journey for Rs 5571. The company has also released the time schedule of the flight. The flight will take off from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at 12:55 pm and reach Adampur at 3:15 pm. After a 35 minute halt at Adampur, it will take off from here at 3:50 pm and reach Mumbai at 6:30 pm. The flight duration will be 2:20 hours for Mumbai-Adampur sector and 2:40 hours for AdampurMumbai sector. The news has brought in excitement, especially businessmen, from Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala. The flight can also benefit commuters from Himachal districts along Punjab border. Adampur will be Indigo's 92nd domestic and 133rd overall destination, IndiGo said. The company has appointed staff for ground handling and administrative purposes. The company has not so far clarified on the flight carrier to be used for the new route. Star Air has already been running flights on Adampur-Hindon-NandedBengaluru sector from Adampur for a year. — TNS SSA, mid-day meal office staff demand regularisation Tribune news Service Jalandhar, May 31 Members of the Sarv Sikhya Abhiyan Mid-Day Meal Daftari (Office) Karamchari Union, Punjab, submitted a demand letter to Aam Aadmi Party state president and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, urging immediate regularisation of office staff in the Education Department, on the lines of the 8,886 teachers who were made permanent earlier. The union members questioned why bureaucrats were defying orders issued by the highest authorities in the state. “Is Punjab’s bureaucracy beyond the reach of the Chief Minister, Finance Minister, and even the party president?” they asked Arora, pointing out the repeated failure of departments to act on clear directives. Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, they noted, had promised the regularisation of office employees within a month during a SSA non-teaching employees submitted a demand letter to Aman Arora. However, officials from the Finance and Personnel Departments have allegedly ignored those instructions. The union further stated that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had issued written orders for regularisation as far back as April 21, 2022. Cabinet Minister Aman Arora too had issued directions to officers on multiple occasions, but no progress has been made. According to union leaders Shobhit Bhagat and Gagandeep Sharma, the government formally accepted their demands on March 14, 2024. Furthermore, the Advocate General of Punjab gave a legal goahead for the regularisation of these employees, eliminating any legal barriers. The delegation also raised the issue of unpaid wages, stating that employees’ salaries for December and January were unjustly deducted. They demanded the immediate release of the withheld payments. In response, Aman Arora assured the union that he would soon arrange a panel meeting between the employees and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
