The furniture market traders will be given the option to purchase commercial sites in an open auction. The new market in Sector 56, which is being developed at a cost of Rs 20 crore, is spread over 44 acres and have 191 plots measuring a kanal each, and 48 booths. A basement and three floors will be allowed on one kanal sites. The UT Engineering Department has informed the Estate Office that the Sector 56 market would be ready by May this year. Estate Office officials today held a meeting with Land Acquisition Officer Saurabh Arora to initiate the auction process for the Sector 56 mar- ket. Officials confirmed that the e-auction would be held soon, and traders from other businesses would also be eligible to bid, making the market open to multiple trades rather than exclusively for furniture and marble businesses. Previously, the Administration had offered furniture traders shop spaces in the rehabilitation colony of Dhanas, but they had rejected the proposal citing the small size of plots. They had stated that those plots were unsuitable for their business needs. They demanded larger plots ranging from 60 to 90 yards. Following discussions, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nishant Kumar Yadav met furniture traders recently, urging them to participate in the upcoming auction for commercial sites. The DC has already made it clear that traders occupying government land will eventually be removed. Furniture traders, on the other hand, argued that just as marble continued on page 2 Mishaps snuff out lives of two motorcyclists in city Chandigarh, February 10 Two motorcyclists were killed in separate accidents in the city. Pankaj (25) of Sector 25 died when he lost control of his bike on the road separating Sector 16 and 23 here on Monday morning. The victim was heading towards the Sector 16 stadium rotary when the mishap took place. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. In the other incident, a 24year-old youth died while his friend was injured after a tractor-trailer hit the motorcycle they were riding near Centra Mall at the Industrial Area, Phase I, late on Saturday night. Complainant Ravi Kumar, a resident of Maloya, reported that he along with his c m y b friend Arjun Singh of Jhampur, Mohali, were going to watch a movie at Elante Mall when a tractor-trailer hit their motorcycle. Arjun sustained serious injuries in the mishap and was rushed to the GMCH32 where doctors declared him brought dead. A case was registered at the Industrial Area police station. During investigation, the police arrested the suspect, identified as Gurtej Singh. He was later released on bail. — TNS Saurabh Malik Tribune News Service Chandigarh, February 10 The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Chandigarh Administration to lay green pavers in the kutcha parking area opposite the underground multilevel parking and plant an adequate number of trees to enhance the green cover. “A writ of mandamus is issued to the UT Administration to lay green pavers in the kutcha parking and plant sufficient number of trees at reasonable intervals with tree guards providing space for parking and allow this kutcha parking to be used for parking of four-wheelers visiting the high court,” the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel asserted. The court also rejected the UT Administration’s objection that the area was earmarked as a green belt within the Capitol Complex, while asserting that the step was essential to balance environmental sustainability with the acute shortage of parking space within the complex.
