The girl is missing since February 5. The complainant told the police that her daughter was a Class VII student of the village school. Expressing doubts, she said an unknown youth abducted her daughter on the pretext of marriage. The police have initiated a probe into the matter and launched a search for the missing girl. OC BIKERS SNATCH WOMAN’S CHAIN Phagwara: Two unidentified bike-borne miscreants snatched a gold chain from Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Rawalpindi village. The victim was going along with her son on her Activa scooter to Chack Hakim village to pay obeisance at Guru Ravi Dass Temple when the motorcyclists snatched her gold chain and managed to flee from the spot. The police have registered a case in this connection. OC THIEVES STEAL CASH FROM SHOP Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked miscreants for stealing cash from a shop. Gagan Deep Singh, a resident of Gill village, complained to the police that unidentified miscreants barged into his medical store on February 10 night and decamped with Rs 10,000. Investigating Officer Jasal Singh said case under Sections 331 (house trespass) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the BNS was registered against the accused. OC 3 BOOKED FOR SNATCHING CASH Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked three unidentified car-borne assailants on the charge of snatching cash. Lovneesh Kumar, a resident of Rupewal village, complained to the police that three car- borne unidentified accused waylaid him on February 7 evening near Nakodar and snatched his bag containing Rs 28,000. Investigating Officer Lakhveer Singh said a case had been registered against unidentified accused. OC DRUGPEDDLERHELD UNDER NDPS ACT Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling intoxicant tablets. Investigating officer (IO) Major Singh said 271 intoxicating tablets were recovered from the possession of the accused identified as Vikramjot, alias Bika, a resident of Sharakpur village in Kapurthala. The IO said a case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. OC MAN HELD WITH 10GM HEROIN Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling heroin. Investigating officer (IO) Gurnam Singh said that 10 gm of heroin was recovered from the possession of the accused identified as Gurmit Singh, a resident of Dharme Dian Chhana village. The IO said a case under Sections 21-B, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. OC City police crack whip on drunken drivers, issue 33 challans in night-time operation Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 13 In a bid to enhance public safety and curb reckless driving, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police conducted a special night-time drive to curb drunken driving and drinking at public places. The operation, held between February 8 and February 12, targeted key areas known for high instances of liquor consumption in vehicles. The drive was held between 8 pm and 11 pm under the supervision of Nirmal Singh, ACP , (Central), and Sirivennela, ACP Model Town. , The primary focus areas included New Grain Market and Boota Mandi, where police teams actively monitored and penalised violators. The operation was spearheaded by the SHO, Division Number 2, with coordinated efforts of the traffic police, Emergency Response Squad (ERS) and the A traffic policeman gives a breath analyser test to a commuter in Jalandhar. Public drinking around liquor shops and ahatas (taverns) was also closely monitored to prevent disorderly conduct. The police emphasised that the drive was part of a broader effort to promote responsible behaviour and ensure safer roads for all commuters. During the course of the operation, the police issued 33 challans for various violations. Of these, 10 challans were issued for drinking and driving, reinforcing the zerotolerance policy against motorists in inebriated state. Besides, five drivers were challaned as their vehicles did not have proper registration number plates, while seven were penalised for not wearing helmets. Eight challans were issued for triple riding on two-wheelers, a dangerous practice that significantly increases the risk of accidents. Furthermore, three vehicles without valid documentation were impounded during the drive. Jalandhar Police officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining road safety and preventing traffic violations. They said such enforcement drives would be conducted regularly to instil a sense of responsibility among motorists and pedestrians alike. They also urged residents to follow traffic rules, warning that strict action would be taken against those indulging in negligent or unlawful behaviour. 4 booked for defrauding Agent held for staging fake robbery residents of ~36.55 lakh Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, February 13 The district police have registered three cases against four accused for cheating people of Rs 31.55 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad. According to information, Davinder Singh of Basant Nagar had filed a petition in the Punjab Haryana High Court in which he stated that by giving false promise of sending his son Sarvjot to Canada, travel agent Sandeep Kaur of Kapurthala, along with her husband Maninder Singh, allegedly cheated him of Rs 10 lakh. On the orders of the court of Justice Rajesh Bhardwaj, the SSP had got the complaint investigated by the DSP (City). In the investigation, it came to light that Maninder Singh had died. After this, the police registered a case against Sandeep Kaur and initiated probe into the matter. In the second incident, Malkit Singh of Dasuya lodged a complaint with the police in which she stated that by luring her to send her to Canada, travel agent Sandeep, a resident of Mohali along with his employee Nancy allegedly cheated her of Rs 5.55 lakh. In the third incident Sandeep Singh, a resident of Jora village, told the Tanda police that his daughter Anmoldeep Kaur was allegedly cheated of Rs 21 lakh on the pretext of arranging a study visa for her and admission to college abroad. The police initiated action after registering a case in this connection. Jalandhar, February 13 The Jalandhar (Rural) police have arrested a delivery agent, who filed a false complaint regarding being robbed of Rs 28,000 to cover up his theft of the company money. The police solved the case within 24 hours. Speaking to mediapersons, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said Inspector Balwinder Singh Bhullar, SHO, Shahkot, led the investigation team that quickly uncovered the truth, the SSP said. The police arrested Lawnish Kumar, alias Deepu, from Rupewal village. Kumar had been working as a delivery agent for a company near Sukhjit Hospital, Nakodar, for the past one-anda-half-month, on a salary of Rs 10,000 per month. He was under pressure to repay a loan he took from a credit company and had other outstanding personal expenses too, the SSP said. “Our investigation showed that no robbery took place that day. Kumar invented the story to keep the company’s money for himself,” the SSP said. The police team recovered Rs 10,000 and one bike from Kumar’s possession. A case was registered against Kumar at the Shahkot police station, the SSP added. The police also impounded Kumar’s motorcycle bearing registration number PB-67-D-1945 as an evidence, he said. The accused would be produced in a court to obtain his remand for recovering remaining money, he added. — TNS Gurnoor gets 99.92 score in JEE Main 1 Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 13 Many students of the city have got a high percentile in the JEE Main Session-1 examination, the result of which was declared on Wednesday evening. A Class 12th student of Police DAV Public School, Gurnoor Singh scored 99.92 percentile in the exam. Maahin Sethi of St Soldier School got 99.91 percentile and Snimerjot Singh of MGN Public School, Adarsh Nagar, managed to get 99.63 percentile. Shabd Handa, also of MGN, obtained 99.08 percentile. Another student of Police DAV School Ramaneet Kang obtained 98.88 percentile. Principal Dr Rashmi Vij congratulated both the students on their success in the examination. Catching bike-borne assailants has become a challenge for the police and the people living in the rural areas of the district. Thirty-eight snatchers’ gangs were busted by the Jalandhar (Rural) police in the past one year (from January 2024 to January 2025). During the same period, the police arrested 136 snatchers. In 2024, 127 cases of snatchings by bike-borne assailants were reported, out of which 113 were solved. This year (till February 10), 10 cases of snatchings by bike-borne assailants were reported to the police, out of which eight were solved. The police claims to have solved 95 per cent of robberies and heists committed by bike-borne accused in the city and the rural areas. Besides, 2,548 vehicles were impounded by the Jalandhar (Rural) police for various traffic violations. The common grouse is that most bike-borne masked thieves strike in the night. They aren’t caught because their bikes are either unnumbered or bear fake registration number plate. In the rural areas of Jalandhar district, several crimes were reported in January alone this year. A highway petrol station robbery at Adampur was committed by bike-borne assailants. They had fixed a fake registration number plate on their two-wheeler. A bike abandoned by assailants after theft of motors and grains at Kudowal village had no registration number plate on it. Three persons were caught with c m y b drugs by residents of Kudowal village riding a bike stolen from Maqsudan sabzi mandi in January end this year. Sukhjinder Singh, sarpanch, Kudowal village, said, “The most common mode of transport used by criminals for committing crimes is a bike. Many criminals flee leaving behind stolen bikes posing a challenge for the police to catch them. During theekri pehras, we checked several motorcycles. One of these vehicle was stolen vehicle from Maqsudan.” Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, SSP Jalandhar (Rural) , said, “Of the 224 two-wheelers recovered last year, at least 70 per cent had fake or no registration number plate. Ninetyfive per cent crimes are committed on bikes. We have software and data base which help in identifying vehicles and their owners. It is common for thieves to use fake number plate on bikes. Offenders are caught as soon as the crime is reported.” The SSP said, “Apart from catching thieves, for the last six to seven months, the Jalandhar (Rural) police have deployed 26 teams to nab traffic and other violators.” The two accused in custody of the Jalandhar (Rural) police. Jalandhar, February 13 The Jalandhar (Rural) police have arrested two members of a robbers gang and recovered stolen items, including mobile phones and cash, from their possession. The accused allegedly committed thefts to fund their drug addiction. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said acting on specific inputs, a special team from the Phillaur police station led by SHO Sanjeev Kapoor under the supervision of DSP Sarwan Singh Bal, arrested Rahul, a resident of Uchi Ghati, Phillaur, and Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Bulle village in Ferozepur district. During search, the police recovered two stolen mobile phones, an iron file used in crimes and Rs 900 in cash from their possession, the SSP said. “Both the accused are drug addicts and have been involved in multiple robbery cases in the past. They admitted to have committed thefts and robberies to pay for drugs,” the SSP said. A case was registered against the accused at the Phillaur police station. The accused would be produced in a court and their police remand sought for further investigation. “A probe is on to find out if they are involved in other criminal cases reported from the region,” the SSP added. — TNS

The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
