TNS Missile part found from Markfed room near Adampur, defused Elderly man dies in hit-&-run mishap near Adampur Tribune News Service Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 12 Two days after missile and drone attacks from Pakistan had nearly ended, a part of a half-burnt missile was found in the generator room of Markfed canneries at Chuharwali village near Adampur. The missile part had reportedly pierced through the generator shed, burning some iron meshes inside the area, but causing minimal damage as it had already been intercepted. The missile was discovered by Markfed employees Pawan Kumar and Charanjit, who immediately reported it to Markfed manager Jagdeep Singh. The manager informed the police and soon after, DSP Kulwant Singh, SHO Hardevpreet Singh, and ASI Daya Chand, along with their teams, arrived at the scene. They contacted Army and Air Force teams, who then called in special disposal teams. Upon inspection, it was found that some explosives within the missile had not been burned. The missile part was safely transported to a nearby field, where it was fully defused. DSP Kulwant Singh com- mended the Markfed teams for following the proper protocol, stressing that they had wisely kept a distance from the missile, which was active and could have caused damage, if mishandled. He urged the public to stay away from any such object and report it to the authorities immediately, as it could still contain unused explosives. On Saturday, at least a dozen missile parts were found in various locations around the district, including near Sarmastpur, Kangniwal, Isharwal and Dhogri villages, all near the Adampur Air Force base. The IAF base and the Indian Oil Depot at Suchi Pind had come under heavy attack from the Pakistani side the previous night, with several drones and missiles targeting them. Civilians within a 3 km radius of the airbase also reported feeling tremors from the falling missiles. Some residents saw smoke arising from the IAF compound, likely due to possible damage. Jalandhar, May 12 An elderly man riding a scooter lost his life in a road accident near Adampur on Monday, again highlighting the growing concerns over road safety and the increasing number of hit-and-run incidents in the region. The victim, identified as Tarsem Singh, a resident of Sainik Vihar in Rama Mandi, was returning home after completing some personal work in Adampur when the accident occurred. According to the police, the incident took place near Sagar Hotel in Adampur, where a speeding truck rammed into Tarsem Singh’s two-wheeler. The impact threw him under the rear wheels of the truck, leading to his death on the spot. Witnesses said the truck driver did not stop to help and immediately fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle a short distance away. Locals said the Adampur police arrived at the site and took custody of the body. The remains were later sent to the Civil Hospital in Jalandhar for a post-mortem examination. Family members confirmed A missile part found near Chuharwali village of Adampur, which was defused by specialised teams of the Army in Jalandhar on Monday. >> that Tarsem Singh had gone out alone for routine personal work and nearly completed his return journey when the tragedy struck. The police have registered a case and taken the truck into custody. A search is underway to trace the driver, who remains absconding. Officials stated that they are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and questioning locals to determine what led to the accident. The fatal incident, meanwhile, has again raised questions over road safety in and around Jalandhar, particularly in semi-urban stretches like Adampur, where heavy vehicles often pass through narrow roads at high speeds. Locals say that the lack of proper signage, poor enforcement of traffic rules and insufficient police patrolling contribute to the frequency of such deadly mishaps. “This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such an incident here. Despite repeated requests, no speed breakers or warning signs have been installed, even though it’s a busy road with both commercial and civilian traffic,” said a shopkeeper near the accident site. This vital link for those heading towards Amritsar and Hoshiarpur via Jalandhar was dug as part of the Municipal Corporation’s hurried pre-election roadwork campaign. But since the polls concluded, the site appears to have been completely abandoned, with potholes turning into water-filled craters and sewage overflow making matters worse. “The road was unmotorable even before it was dug up,” a commuter said. “Now, it’s nearly impassable. We expected improvement, not worse conditions. The authorities have just left it like this.” The situation is particularly troubling because the road is a preferred shortcut for motorists avoiding the longer route via the PAP flyover. However, they now have to navigate through broken surfaces, potholes and stagnant The poor condition of Chuggiti road irks commuters near Guru Nanak Pura in Jalandhar. Overflowing sewage merges with accumulated rainwater, creating a foul smell and unhygienic mess across the road. Residents complain that the stretch near the railway crossing, Guru Nanak Pura, is equally dangerous, riddled with deep potholes and lacking any basic upkeep. Kamal Sharma, a local resi- dent, said, “The road condition is shameful. We pay our taxes, yet face these conditions daily. The Municipal Corporation seems to have forgotten us right after the votes were counted.” Another resident pointed out the problem of poor quality repair work across the city. “Even where roads are repaired, it’s all temporary. Within weeks, the same problems reappear. There’s no quality control, no follow-up,” he said. “With no communication from the authorities and no signs of work restarting, we feel betrayed by politicians who had promised better infrastructure during their campaigns. The broken, waterlogged road now stands as a grim symbol of postelection apathy”, said Kavita Mehra, another resident. Meanwhile, MC officials said road repair work is on in the city, with many broken stretches already repaired and this stretch too will be covered under the ongoing works.
