Jaspal Singh of village Chak Sarwani told the police that his son Rohit (16) was returning from village Sangoktarala on a bike with his friend Vishal Singh. A trolley hit them and he died. The police have arrested the driver Somraj. In another case, Samson of Chakwal told the police that his father Saraj Masihhad left for Talwara on a bike. A truck hit his father and he died. While Gagandeep Kaur of village Ghuman of Gurdaspur told the police that her husband was going to village Jalalpur for some work. When he reached near Tanda, a truck loaded with sugarcane hit him. She told that her husband died. The police have registered a case. OC THIEVES DECAMP WITH CASH, GOLD Hoshiarpur: Thieves targeted a house in broad daylight and stole cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 90,000. Ravinder Kumar, a resident of village Badala Pakka, told the police that he was on duty while his mother had gone to her village. When she returned, the lock of the house was broken. He told the police that thieves stole cash and gold ornaments from his house. After registering the case, the police have started further action. OC Two young lives snuffed out in road accident Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 20 In a devastating accident near the TV Centre, close to Nakodar Chowk in the wee hours of the morning, two young men lost their lives when their scooter was struck by a four-wheeler and subsequently run over by a speeding SUV. The victims, identified as 31-year-old Pankaj and 30year-old Mohit, both residents of Basti Nau in Jalandhar West, were returning home from a birthday party when the fatal incident occurred around 2 am. According to SHO Hardev Singh of Division Number 4, the two were travelling on a scooter along with their two friends, who were riding separately on a motorcycle. As they approached Sharanjit Hospital near TV Centre, a vehicle Phagwara: Sita Devi (40) of the Rattanpura locality in Phagwara and employee of a private school lost her life when her hair got stuck in a school generator in New Model Town, Phagwara, on Thursday. During light rain after power shut down for some time, she went to switch off the generator, but as soon as she did it, her hair got stuck in the belt of the generator. She was immediately brought to the local Civil Hospital in a critical condition where Emergency Medical Officer Dr Ravi declared her brought dead. OC Two POs held for murdering kabaddi player PHAGWARA, February 20 The Nakodar police have arrested two proclaimed offenders on the charge of murdering prominent kabaddi player Sandeep Singh. SHO Baljindar Singh said the accused had been identified as Punit Kumar of Mohalla Aman Nagar, Jalandhar, and Narindar Kumar, alias Lali, a resident of Gobind Nagar near Guja Peer, Jalandhar. Angrej Singh of Nangal Ambian village had complained to the police that his brother Sandeep Singh, a prominent kabaddi player, came to Mallian Kalan village with his team to participle in a tournament on March 14, 2022. He had said in his complaint that around 6 PM, five car-borne armed persons indiscriminately fired at his brother who fell on the ground, bleeding profusely. The accused again fired some gunshots at his brother who succumbed to his injuries in a clinic, adding the accused opened fire while fleeing and injured two more persons. While the SUV has been seized, its driver managed to flee the scene. “We are currently working to trace the driver and also Murder case cracked in 24 hrs 23-year-old held from Shekhewal Tribune News Service WORKER DIES IN BIZARRE MISHAP Pankaj Jalandhar, February 20 In a major breakthrough, the Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested a person involved in a murder case reported in village Shekhewal under Police Station, Shahkot. The accused was apprehended within 24 hours of the crime. SSP Jalandhar Rural, HPS , Khakh, said following the directions of the government and DGP Gaurav Yadav, a sustained crackdown was underway against criminals involved in heinous offences. The latest operation was conducted under the supervision of SP Investigation, Jas, rup Kaur Bath and DSP , Shahkot, Onkar Singh Brar. A police team traced and arrested the accused. The incident was reported on the night of February 18 when the Shahkot police received information about a murder in village Shekhewal. On reaching the spot, the police recorded the statement of Kuljit Kaur, wife of the deceased Inderjit Singh. She stated that around 8:30 PM, her husband had stepped outside to close the outer gate when Gursevak Singh, alias Sohal, attacked him with a cattle fodder cutter. The accused struck repeatedly, leaving Inderjit critically injured. When family members rushed to his aid, the accused fled the scene. The victim succumbed to his injuries soon after. Following an investigation, the accused Gursevak Singh, a 23-year-old resident of Shekhewal, was arrested on the evening of February 19. The case has been registered under Section 103 of the BNS at police station, Shahkot. DSP of the Vigilance Munish Kumar Sharma said the complainant Rohit Chauhan of Mohalla Shakti Nagar, Hoshiarpur, had filed a complaint with the Vigilance following which the Vigilance had arrested Alka Sharma, a computer operator in the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, red-handed on November 8, 2024, while accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000. He said Harpreet Singh, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, who was absconding for more than three months was also involved. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH Three involved in snatching held Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 20 In a swift and coordinated operation conducted under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, the police apprehended three persons involved in a snatching case near Peera Di Jagha, Nehar Pully, on Kapurthala Road. The suspects Sumi Kumar, Karan and Rahul Kumar were caught while riding a scooter with stolen mobile phones and weapons. Police officials confirmed that the arrest led to the recov- ery of two stolen smartphones along with a cleaver and a knife. The trio was booked. Further investigations have revealed that the accused have prior criminal records, particularly related to snatching and theft. Sumi Kumar was previously booked on June 6, 2024. Rahul Kumar also has a history of criminal activity. The police have presented the arrested persons before the court and secured their custody for further interrogation. “We are now probing their possible involvement in other criminal activities across the city”, police officials said. 41 challaned, three vehicles impounded Ration depots inspected in Nawanshahr Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 20 The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police intensified its enforcement against drunken driving and public drinking with a special night-time drive held between February 16 and 19. Conducted between 8pm and 11pm, the crackdown targeted violators consuming alcohol in vehicles and those engaging in reckless driving. The operation was led under the supervision of Nirmal Singh, ACP-Central, and Sirivennela, ACP-Model Town, with the key focus areas, including the Gymkhana Club and Satluj Chowk vicinity. The drive was spearheaded by the SHO of Division No. 4 and Bus Stand Chowki, with support from the Traffic Police, the ERS team and the Field Media Team. Officials said the aim of the drive was to curb the consumption of alcohol while driving, particularly near wine shops and ahatas, in an effort to enhance public safety. Police teams carried out extensive inspections, checking 306 vehicles and using breath analyzers to test drivers suspected of being under the influence. The crackdown led to the c m y b issuance of 41 challans for various traffic violations. Among them, 12 were for drinking and driving while eight were issued for vehicles without proper number plates. Additionally, 10 challans were issued to twowheeler riders without helmets and eight were for triple riding on motorcycles. The police also impounded three vehicles due to a lack of proper documentation. Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, February 20 Member of the Punjab State Food Commission Vijay Dutt today conducted a surprise inspection of various government ration depots in Nawanshahr district. The purpose was to review the ongoing welfare schemes under the National Food Security Act. Vijay Dutt checked the government ration depots in Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, Mohalla Shanti Nagar, Valmiki Mohalla, Mohalla Chopra, Saloh Road and Nawashahr City. During the visit, he interacted with the beneficiaries who had come to collect their ration and provided them with information about their rights. The officials concerned were also present during the inspection. Dutt stated that the government was distributing wheat under a three-month plan from January to March. According to data, around 8082% of wheat has already been distributed in the district. “Additionally, the introduction of biometric machines and electronic weighing machines in all government ration depots has enhanced transparency in the ration distribution process, providing relief to the public,” he stated.
