The Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Ram Singh, who was heading a police party, said here on Monday that the cops were on routine patrol when they got suspicious of the movement of the juvenile at Panjwar village on the Chabal-Khemkaran road. The police signalled to stop him and on searching him, they recovered one countrymade pistol with a cartridge from his possession. Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Singh said during his preliminary interrogation, the suspect said he was in the area to sell the illegal weapon. A case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against him by the police. PHOTO: GURBAXPURI Tarn Taran, March 4 The Tarn Taran police on Tuesday arrested 25 farmers who were planning to disturb the normal functioning of the government during their protest slated for March 5 in Chandigarh. SSP Abhimanyu Rana said here that the farmers have been booked under Sections of 107 and 151 of the BNSS Act by the police. Meanwhile, the farmer organizations associated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) organized protests and burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. Nachhattar Singh Pannu, district president of the Kirti Kisan Union, said that the farmers launched a protest over Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leaving the meeting mid-way. It was being held with the representatives of different farmer organizations in Chandigarh on Monday. Nachhattar Singh said the police arrested leaders of farmers from different places. The arrested farmers were identi- fied as Sukhdev Singh Sarhali, Sukhchain Singh, Balkar Singh Jandoke, Balwant Singh Khehra, Satpal Singh Nathoke, Daljit Singh Dialpura, Mukhtiar Singh Mallha, Resham Singh failoke, Harbhajan Singh Patti, Ajaib Singh Aladinpur, Kuldeep Singh, Captain Singh Baghiari, Jasbir Singh Pannu and others. The farmers in their protests held in front of different police stations demanded early release of the arrested farmers. — OC Amritsar, March 4 Eight months after several armed persons robbed the house of a commission agent after holding him and his wife hostage, the city police have arrested the ninth accused in the case and recovered a huge quantity of gold and silver jewellery and ~2.9 lakh cash from his possession. He has been identified as Balram Singh, alias Ballu, a resident of Surakhpur in Kapurthala. According to the police, he had five criminal cases registered against him in Amritsar rural, Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts. War against Drugs: ‘Big fish’ lands in police net Residents bear the brunt as Tehsildars go on mass leave Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 4 In the ongoing crackdown against drug trafficking in Punjab, the Amritsar police commissionerate on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a ‘big fish’ along with his son for drug peddling. He has as many as 10 FIRs, including of drug peddling, counterfeit currency and attempt to murder in different parts of Punjab (including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Muktsar, Kapurthala and Tarn Taran). They were identified as Amolak Singh and his son Mahabir Singh alias Goldy of Thatha village in Tarn Taran. The police said that the father-son duo was arrested in a drug case registered with the Gate Hakima police station on January 20 in which the police had recovered 3 kg of heroin and ~5 lakh of drug money and the vehicles used in the smuggling. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar termed their arrest as a major achievement for the city police, adding that the court had issued non-bailable warrants against them. As per a preliminary probe, Amolak was possessing a fake arms licence for the weapons he was possessing. Meanwhile, the city police have arrested six traffickers and confiscated 1.65 kg of heroin, ~82,300 of drug money and intoxicants from them in six separate cases. Besides, the police seized two persons with two sophisticated pistols with 25 bullets and two vehicles. Sukhwinde Singh alias Sonu of Ishwar Nagar, Tarn Taran Road, was held with 119.60 gm of heroin. He was travelling on a scooter when he was intercepted by a patrolling police party. In the second case, the Gate Hakima police arrested Guriqbal Singh of Gurnam Nagar with 1,000 sedative pills dur- ing the checking of vehicles near Anngarh area. Similarly, the Mohkampura police nabbed Balwinder Singh, alias Billur, of Tungpai Road with 255 gm of heroin along with ~3,000 drug money. He was arrested from near 40-khuh area. Akashdeep Singh of Maqboolpura was arrested by the police with 120 gm of heroin along with ~4,500 drug proceeds. Pardeep Singh alias Vachha of Guru Nanak Nagar of Verka, Preetkamal aka Kalu of Batala Road were arrested by the police and recovered 270 gm of contraband with ~4,800 of drug money. Similarly, the Islamabad police have nabbed Gagan Kumar of Mohalla Baba Jeevan Singh, Kot Khalsa, with 15 gm of heroin and ~70,000 of drug proceeds. Besides, the police also arrested Sikanderbir alias Sikander of Sandhra village in Tarn Taran and Armandeep Singh of Loharka Kalan was arrested with 285 gm of heroin along with 1 Glock pistol (9mm) and a pistol of .32 bore along with 25 rounds and an SUV from them. SUNIL KUMAR Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 4 Following the call given by the Punjab Revenue Officers’ Association, tehsildars went on mass leave here on Tuesday. As a result, the residents who had received appointments to register their properties on Tuesday were a harassed lot as they had to return disappointed after finding that the entire process of property registration had come to a halt. Jagseer Singh Mittal, a member of the association, said property registration was stopped at all 13 tehsils and sub-tehsils in the district. These include Sub-Divisional Magistrates 1 and 2, Amritsar Tehsildar offices 1 and 2, and all sub-divisions of Baba Bakala, Ajnala, Ramdas, Attari, Tarsikka, Jandiala Guru, Majitha, and Lopoke. On an average, over 500 properties are registered daily in these offices. People who came to the offices to register their properties were dismayed and inconvenienced with many of them coming from distant parts of the district. Several vital public services continued uninterrupted, including the issuance of marriage certificates, certificates for Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, court-related matters, and miscellaneous work. However, official works related to property registrations, releases of Farad for Zamanat, loans from banks and various certificates were significantly affected. The Returning Officer said Palwinder Kaur got 482 votes and Navjot Kaur polled 407 votes. Of the total 2,089 votes, 1,096 votes were polled. Jatinder Kaur and Kirandeep Kaur, both Independent candidates, got 172 and 29 votes, respectively. The poll of the ward was postponed during the elections held on March 2 due to some technical error. The ruling AAP has won eight seats and the Congress three seats. — OC Amritsar, March 4 The Ferozepur division of Northern Railway during an intensive ticket checking in trains earned a revenue of ~2.39 crore from ticketless passengers in February. Out of ~2.39 crore, ~37,27,905 was earned from the Amritsar railway station. To curb ticketless and irregular travel in trains and ensure comfortable travel and better services to genuine rail users, the ticket checking drive is being conducted. Divisional Railway Manager Sanjay Sahu said during ticket checking in trains, a total of 24,654 passengers were found travelling without tickets or irreg- c m y b ularly by the ticket checking staff and chief ticket inspectors of the division. A total revenue of ~2.39 crore was recovered from them as fine. This has increased the revenue of the Ferozepur division, which is commendable, he added. Railway officials also conducted frequent surprise ticket checking drives to prevent unauthorized entry of passengers in trains and passengers were advised to travel in trains with proper tickets. To keep the railway stations of the division clean and to stop the general public from littering railway properties and make them aware of cleanliness, regular checking is done at the main stations of the division. Amritsar, March 4 Officials of the district administration are visiting the fields affected by hailstorm on a regular basis and the government would justifiably compensate farmers for their loss. This was stated by Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney during her visit to Rajasansi area here on Tuesday. The DC said the government has already ordered a girdawari to assess the crop loss caused by natural calamity, the purpose of which is to identify the farmers who have suffered crop loss. Apart from visits by Revenue Department and Agricultural Department officials, the administration had also launched a telephone helpline for the farmers to report their location and loss to their crops.
