FILE PHOTO Fast train link between Amritsar-Delhi sought Neeraj Bagga Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 11 After Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari announced than a person would be able to commute between Amritsar and Delhi in four hours in the coming next three months, the demand for similar facility through train has grown louder. Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal president Piara Lal Seth said, “We appreciate the move of the Central Government to provide swift transportation by road. It will ensure faster movement of goods and cargo on the stretch. The route also requires fast trains.” The Amritsar-Delhi rail section is the busiest route despite having a many trains, flights and buses. Three pair of direct trains ply between Amritsar and Delhi. These trains include New Delhi-Amritsar Superfast and two Shatabdis. Besides, there are many trains that start from the local railway station and halt in Delhi and its suburbs. These trains include Chhattisgarh Express, Amritsar-Mumbai Frontier, Shan-e-Punjab Express, Garib Rath, Dadar Express, Delhi-Pathankot Express via Amritsar and others. Most of these trains are packed to capacity. Kulwant Singh, an educationist, said the work on the country’s first bullet train connecting Mumbai-Ahmedabad was in full swing. He said a bullet train could be introduced between Delhi and Amritsar via Chandigarh route. He said, “The 465-km project is long awaited by passengers, who frequently travel on this route. If introduced, such train will cut short the distance between the National Capital and Amritsar from existing six hours to two hours.” Tarn Taran, March 11 The Sadar police have booked Jashan, a resident of Ghurakwind village, on the charge of abducting a teenage girl of a village days ago. A case was been registered by the police on Tuesday against the accused in this connection. Assitant Sub-Inpector (ASI) Karamjit Kaur recorded statement of victim’s mother. The ASI said the accused abducted girl on February 25 on the pretext of marrying her. The victim’s mother said her daughter used to complain about harassment by the accused. A case under Sections 137 (2) and 96 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against the accused in this connection. Raids were on to nab the accused, said the Sadar police here on Tuesday. Police claim to have solved blind murder case within hours Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, March 11 The Tarn Taran police have solved a blind murder case within hours of reporting the crime. The police claimed that the body of the deceased was identified and the accused arrested along with the weapon used in the crime. SP (Headquarter) Parwinder Kaur said the Harike police found body of one unidentified person from canal distributor path situated on the link road of Booh Havelian village on Monday. She said a police team led by Kanwalpreet Singh, DSP , Patti, and Ranjit Singh, SubInspector, SHO Harike, succeed in identifying the deceased as Varinder Singh (20), a resident of Buraj Deva Singh village. “The accused has been identified as The accused in custody of the Tarn Taran police. Employee attempts to sneak cellphones into Central Jail, held Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 11 A jail employee was caught redhanded by officials while attempting to smuggle mobile phones into Central Jail under the pretext of serving tea at Fatahpur today. The suspect was identified as Jagdeep Singh of the Punjab Ex-servicemen Corporation (PESCO). Jail Superintendent Hemant Sharma said a contractual employee of PESCO identified as Jagdeep Singh arrived at the prison gate while carrying a tea kettle. As part of routine security checks, on-duty staff, including Assistant Superintendent Prabhdyal Singh, head warder Harjeet Kumar Peti Police personnel deployed outside Central Jail in Amritsar. and constable Sukhwinder Singh, conducted a thorough search of Jagdeep Singh. Officials immediately informed their seniors and the local police station in Islamabad. The confiscated mobile phones were handed over to the police for initiating further legal proceedings. PHOTO: GURBAXPURI Man arrested with illegal weapon Tarn Taran, March 11 A police party led by Inspector Amandeep Singh arrested one bike-borne person on Monday, who was smuggling arms from across the international border. Giving more information in this connection, SSP Abhimanyu Rana said the accused was identified as Shaganpreet Singh, alias Gullu, a resident of Hardoratan village under the Gharinda police station. He was arrested with a Glock pistol and two live cartridges from of Bhuse village. The SSP said the accused had been smuggling arms from across the border. A case under Sections of 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the accused at the Sarai Amanat Khan police station, he said. The accused was arrested four months ago with illegal weapons by the Gharinda police and was facing criminal proceedings. — OC 22-yr-old youth dies of drug overdose Amritsar, March 11 A 22-year-old youth reportedly died due to drug overdose in Naushehra village, located on Majitha Road in Amritsar district today. The deceased was identified as Ajay Kumar, a resident of Naushehra village. He was the only brother of five sisters. According to information, two youths reportedly consumed drugs, leading to immediate death of Ajay Kumar, while the other was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition. According to victim’s family, Ajay got hooked to drugs few years ago. His kin had made every effort to help him shun drugs. He had undergone treatment at a rehabilitation centre, but failed to give up drugs. This time, an overdose proved fatal for him. The incident has left Ajay’s family and villagers in deep grief. The bereaved family and local residents alleged police negligence, while stating that drug supply was rampant in the village for a long time. The victim’s family said they had informed the police several times about the open sale of drugs in the village, but no concrete steps were taken to stop it. Residents of Naushehra village also pointed out that the government had recently launched a campaign titled “war against drugs” in which they were claiming to curb the supply of drugs. They said drug peddlers remain unaffected and continued to sell narcotics openly. The grieving family and villagers have urged the Punjab Government and the police to take stringent action against drug traffickers operating in the area. Residents are worried that if immediate action is not taken, more addicts could die due to drug addiction. However, police officials were not aware of any such death due to drug overdose. — TNS Amritsar, March 11 The city police have arrested three individuals involved in cellphone snatchings. The police recovered 10 snatched mobile phones and a motorcycle without registration number plate from the accused today. The arrested accused were identified as Jatinder Singh, alias Bau (27). a resident of Chatwind village, Davinder Singh, alias Chiri (31), a resident of Wadala Gogara in the Jandiala area and Lali (39), a resident of Verpal village in Amritsar. Jatinder Singh and Davinder Singh were apprehended on March 7, while Lali was arrested on March 9. The breakthrough came when a police team led by ASI Lakhwinderpal Singh, was on patrol duty near Company Bagh, spotted two young men standing beside a motorcycle without number plate. Upon seeing the police, they attempted to flee, but were chased and nabbed by officials. Upon questioning, they were identified as Jatinder Singh and Davinder Singh. Their search led to the recovery of a Samsung mobile phone and a Realme mobile phone from Jatinder Singh, while two mobiles were recovered from Davinder Singh. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to have snatched mobile phones from people across various locations in the city. They were going sell cellphones. Based on their statements, the police arrested their accomplice, Lali, on March 9. In all, 10 snatched mobile phones were recovered from the accused. The accused admitted their involvement in snatchings in different areas of the city, including bus stands, railway station, Majitha Road, Sultanwind Road, Chatwind, and Manawala. The police are investigating to identify associates of the accused involved in the crime. The accused are already facing criminal cases. “The arrests were made as part of a special operation launched by the Civil Lines police under the directives of Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar to curb robberies and other serious crimes in the city. A case has been registered at under Sections 304(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in this connection,” said Gurpreet Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Civil Lines police station. 7.63 mm calibre rounds recovered from a wheat field in Tarn Taran. BSFrecoversammunition from Tarn Taran border Amritsar, March 11 Based on the information shared by the intelligence wing about a drone smuggling activity on the border area of Tarn Taran district, the Border Security Force (BSF) ambush party in collaboration with the Punjab Police conducted an operation in the suspected area in the early hours today. The ambush party and the police, on hearing a dropping sound conducted an extensive search which culminated at about 1.05 pm with the recovery of one card board box containing 47 rounds of 7.63 mm calibre from a wheat field adjacent to Wan village in Tarn Taran district.
