Robber who attacked woman with sharp weapon arrested Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 22 The Rama Mandi police have solved a case involving an armed robber, who attacked an elderly woman in one of the city’s posh localities. The accused, identified as Rajan from Lamba Pind, has been arrested and the snatched mobile phone along with the datar (sharp-edge weapon) used in the attack has been recovered from him. Nirmal Singh, ACP Central Jalandhar, confirmed that an FIR under Sections 309(6) and 331(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at the Rama Mandi police station in this con- nection. The accused was apprehended following a swift police operation. The incident occurred on Friday at 12.20 pm when Rajan entered House No. 262 in Guru Gobind Singh Avenue. As soon as woman in the house saw him, she started screaming and ran towards the gate. The robber caught hold of 65year-old Neelam Gupta from behind, forced her to stand near the gate and attacked her with a datar, inflicting severe injuries on her hand. The entire attack was captured in the CCTV footage. In the disturbing footage, Neelam Gupta can be seen running out of the house, crying for help as the armed rob- ber followed closely behind. As she tried to defend herself, he struck her brutally before fleeing towards the main road. Local residents, who witnessed the horrifying act, chased the attacker as he ran towards the main school road. The attack, meanwhile, left the family in shock, with bloodstains marking the ramp at their house entrance. The incident has also sparked fear among residents of the area, which consists of six major colonies built on land owned by the Jalandhar Improvement Trust. Representatives from various resident bodies have now demanded stronger security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. c m y b Jalandhar, March 22 The son of an ASI is the sixth accused in Jalandhar grenade attack case. SARABJIT SINGH After Mayor, JIT Chairperson’s banners take over city, sparking public outrage Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 22 City’s streets, once flooded with banners celebrating the election of new Mayor, are now witnessing a fresh wave of congratulatory hoardings — this time for Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT) Chairperson Rajwinder Kaur Thiara. The public spaces are covered with massive posters, raising serious concerns among residents who see this as yet another example of misplaced priorities by those in power. Since the announcement of the municipal elections in December, the Jalandhar was transformed into a city of banners and hoardings, with public spaces becoming a battleground for political visibility. Initially, campaign posters urging residents to vote were put up across key locations. After the results were announced, these were replaced with thanks giving messages from victorious candidates. Soon after, enormous congratulatory hoardings celebrating the newly elected Mayor began to dominate the skyline. Now, another round of banners has emerged, this time congratulating Thiara for her appointment as the JIT Chairperson. From main roads to busy intersections, the city has been plastered with these posters, creating a visual overload that many residents find excessive and unnecessary. Locations such as 66ft Road, Urban Estate, Phase II, Sky Lark Road, Company Bagh Chowk, Model Town and Ladowali Road have been taken over by hoardings, leaving little space untouched. The sheer scale of the display has led many to question whether public resources and spaces are being misused for political self-promotion rather than serving the city’s actual needs. “What is the need for such huge banners? Everyone already knows who the JIT Continued on page 2
