Jalandhar, March 28 A DSP posted with the Jaland, har rural police, extended help to an infirm 85-year-old man, who had been confined to bed due to a severe infection in his left foot. DSP Kartarpur, Surinder , Pal Singh Dhogri, on coming to know of the plight of the elderly man, admitted him to a local private hospital where he is undergoing treatment. A video of this help also went viral on social media. Some social activists in Kartarpur brought the plight of the man to the DSP’s notice after which he decided to admit him to a hospital and get him treated until he was healthy. The man, identified as Gurnam Singh Gama, resident of Bare Pind in Kartarpur, had no one to look after him. A severe infection in his left foot left him unable to sit or walk. The elderly’s son had died some years ago after which no one else was left in his family to take care of him. Due to infection, all five fingers of the man’s left foot had to be severed. Dhogri said, “Some social activists had told me about the plight of the elderly man after which we admitted him to the hospital. As per our information, he had a severe infection in his foot and had no earnings, nor any member at home to take care of him. He didn’t even have money to buy food. On top of poverty, his health condition rendered him immobile. I asked some of my friends to bring him to me from where we would take him. But on a duty visit, I met him on the road itself and we admitted him immediately to a private hospital in Jalandhar.” The DSP added, “Since the infection had spread, five of his fingers on his left foot had to be severed to prevent further infection. Doctors are also checking out the cause for the malaise, it may be due to diabetes or related reasons.” The DSP along with his , friends, has undertaken to bear all costs of the ongoing treatment of the man. The DSP said, “It is our duty to help people. One day I too will retire. We will all be Gurnam Singh has been taken to a private hospital in Jalandhar. The farmers put up tents in the PUDA complex and expressed grouse against the government through their speeches for more than three hours. The protest was led by party president Balbir Singh Rajewal of the BKU (Rajewal) and Balwinder S Malli Nangal of the Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee. The members of other unions, including the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and All-India Kisan Khet Mazdoor Sangathan, also participated in the event. Malli Nangal said, “This is our protest against the state government’s highhandedness. They have insulted the farmers, which we have not been able to accept. Our belongings, including tractors, were stolen and now the government is bound to return our stuff. Further, the IT cell of the government has been used to spread venom against the farmers. We shall not tolerate this. Our protests shall grow against the state government in the days to come”.— TNS Phagwara MLA raises JCT former staff concerns in Assembly Ashok Kaura Phagwara, March 28 In a significant development, Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal raised concerns in the Vidhan Sabha the plight of nearly 5,000 former employees of JCT Ltd, who have been struggling for their dues following the closure of the textile mill two years ago. Speaking in the Assembly, Dhaliwal said the JCT management was involved in financial misconduct amounting to over Rs 100 crore. He claimed that despite multiple FIRs against JCT directors Samir Thapar and Mukulika Sinha for various offences, law enforcement agencies have failed to take any action against them. The MLA further stated that the mill’s closure was illegal and the assets were allegedly sold without obtaining the mandatory NOCs from the state government or the Centre. Additionally, he pointed to serious irregularities in PF withdrawals and non-compliance with ESI regulations. Following the Assembly session, former employees of JCT Ltd. expressed gratitude to Dhaliwal for raising their issues to the forum. Many exworkers, including Ashwini Thapar, accused company officials of unlawfully withdrawing PF contributions without the employees’ consent, leaving thousands of families in distress. Staff, pensioners burn copies of Budget Jalandhar, March 28 Criticism has come in for the Punjab Budget by various employee organsations in the state. While the Budget came under condemnation from the Punjab Employees and Pensioners Joint Front and Government Teachers Union, the Sarv Sikhiya Abhiyan Office Employees and Mid Day Meal Union also targeted the government on the Budget. The Punjab Employees and Pensioners Joint Front condemned the Budget on the failure to restore the old pension scheme contrary to the poll promises made by AAP . The SSA Office and Mid Day Meal Employees criticised it for failing to deliver any promises for contractual employees awaiting regularisation. On Thursday, on the call of the Punjab Employees and Pensioners Joint Front, copies of the Budget were also burnt in various schools of Phillaur. The Punjab Employees and Pensioners Joint Front said this was done to protest the anti-employee and anti-people Budget. President of the Government Teachers Union Punjab, Jalandhar Karnail Phillaur said they had been cheated. Before coming to power, the AAP had promised to restore the OPS, double the salaries of ASHA and Mid-Day Meal workers, regularisation of contractual employees, restore all allowance, including rural allowance, link DA to the Centre and and pay all outstanding dues. — TNS Thapar alleged that JCT Ltd had failed to adhere to the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, despite managing its own PF trust. He criticised the EPFO for its inaction on the matter. During a meeting on February 14, 2025, the Labour Department, under the supervision of the Chief Secretary, reportedly directed the authorities to initiate legal action against the trustees of the JCT PF Trust. However, no steps have been taken for prolonging the employees’ struggle for justice. The ex-workers further claimed that repeated requests for the disclosure of paid and unpaid PF amounts as well as Voluntary Provident Fund contributions have been ignored. The absence of transparency, they argue, continues to hinder rightful recoveries for the affected employees. A particularly distressing revelation made by Dhaliwal in the Assembly was that eight former employees allegedly lost their lives due to the company’s failure to comply with ESI regulations. The lack of proper medical aid under the ESI is believed to have directly contributed to these deaths, exacerbating the suffering of the victims’ families. Despite CM Bhagwant Mann’s awareness of the issue, there has been little progress in ensuring justice for workers. The ex-employees’ union remains hopeful that the state government, now officially alerted through the Assembly, will prioritise their concerns and take decisive action. The affected workers are demanding swift police intervention, including arrests in connection with the FIRs filed against JCT Ltd. officials. As thousands of families await justice, they urged the state authorities to act without further delay.
