The elections of both Houses were held on March 2 except in Ward No. 3 of the Tarn Taran MC, which was latter held on March 4. The post of the Tarn Taran civic body president was reserved for general category candidate and for Khemkaran Nagar Panchayat for a woman candidate belonging to Schedule Caste category. The District Election Officer-cum- Deputy Commissioner Rahul in the letter issued here today said the Tarn Taran SDM had been nominated as the convener for the election of the Tarn Taran MC chief. None of the party got majority in Tarn Taran MC election. In the 25 member Tarn Taran MC House, 14 independent candidates won, while the ruling AAP could win eight seats and the Congress three. So far, eight members of the AAP have failed to show their unity. Police conduct search op at Guru Ki Wadali Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 29 As part of the state-wide campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh”, the Amritsar city police commissionerate today carried out cordon and search operation (CASO) at Guru Ki Wadali in the Chheharta area which is infamous for drug abuse in the city. Special Director General Police (DGP) Shashi Prabha Dwivedi supervised the operation. She was accompanied by Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alam Vijay Singh. Speaking to mediapersons, she said since the launch of the state-wide campaign, the city police had arrested 216 drug traffickers in 113 cases registered with various police stations here in the past 28 days. She said the police recovered 35.9 kg of heroin, Rs 10.33 lakh of drug money apart from 16 sophisticated pistols during this period. The police also seized over 2 kg of opium and other narcotic substances and 18 suspicious vehicles from the accused, she said. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said 300 cops led by the senior officials conducted the operation during which they searched houses of suspects, besides checking vehicles in the area. The DGP also interacted with women of the area. She said the police was regularly holding police-public meetings under the Operation Sampark to make the general public aware and seek their help in the noble cause of eradicating the drug menace from society. PHOTOS: SUNIL KUMAR Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 29 The Amritsar Municipal Corporation (MC) has proposed a Budget of Rs 459.45 crore for the year 2025-26 and sent it to the Local Bodies Department, Punjab Government, for approval here on Saturday. In the Budget, the MC has proposed to increase revenue targets and funds for development projects. The MC had approved a Budget of Rs 411 .75 crore for the year 2024-25. Almost 66 per cent Budget has been earmarked for the establishment, 30 per cent for development works and four per cent has been set aside to meet any contingency or emergency. The civic body has increased the target of each department’s estimated income in the Budget for 2025-26. The Budget meeting also passed a resolution for the grant of cow cess to a trust for running and maintenance of cow shelter built by the MC at Naraingarh. The resolution provides Rs 50 per head of cattle for each day to the Kamdhenu Gau Dhaam Trust for a period of five years. The House also passed a resolution for changing and repair of water supply lines, changing and repair of sewer lines and desilting of sewer lines in all five urban Assembly constituencies of the city at a cost of Rs 5.74 crore. The corporation further has plans to install 750 dustbins (150 in each Assembly segment) at a cost of Rs 47.19 lakh. Each of these dustbins would cost the MC an amount of Rs 6,292. Further, the MC has proposed to recruit a total of 116 sewer men on outsourcing basis for a period of six months to ensure cleanliness and maintenance of sewerage system in the city. The corporation has also earmarked a Budget of Rs 2.45 crore for supply and installation of streetlights. It has further earmarked Rs 49.22 crore for providing water supply in selected areas of the city. It was the first meeting of the General House of the corporation since the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party in the state three years ago. The MC House was dissolved soon after the elections. In the first meeting of the House, the Congress councillors, who are in the opposition, challenged the AAP to prove majority on the floor. Congress councillor Vikas Soni said, “The AAP has installed a fake Mayor despite the fact that it does not have required strength of councillors in the House.” He said the ruling party had politicised the Local Bodies Department wherein instead of looking into the problems of people at the grass root level, the Budget was allocated Assembly wise in the city. Counter intelligence arrest three District admn, police raze house of drug peddler weapon smugglers, seize six pistols PK Jaiswar Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 29 The Amritsar counter intelligence (CI) have arrested three weapon smugglers and recovered six pistols, including one 9MM Glock, two .30 bore and three countrymade .32 bore pistols, from their possession. Gaurav Yadav, Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, in a statement issued here on Saturday said that those arrested were identified as Gurjant Singh, a resident of Sangatpura, Amritsar, and Gursharan Singh, alias Gursharandeep, and Abhishek, alias Abhi, both residents of Lakhuwal, Amritsar. The DGP said the trio were arrested a day after the Amritsar CI busted a Pak-backed illegal arms smuggling racket with the arrest of two operatives, who were further supplying weapons to associates of foreign-based gangsters Lakhbir Landa and Satta Naushera. He said five sophisticated pistols were recovered from their possession. He said the CI got an intelligence input that several armed person were planning to commit some crime at Uggar Aulakh village located on the Amritsar-Ajnala road. Acting swiftly, a police team conducted a raid near Uggar Aulakh village on the Amritsar-Ajnala road and nabbed the accused, the DGP said. He said preliminary investigation revealed that all the accused had criminal history and cases of different natures, including Arms Act, NDPS Act and Excise Act were registered against them. A fresh case under Sections 25 of the Arms Act and Sections 61(2) and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against the accused, he said. — TNS Navratri Speical Offer ansaL BUILDWELL LTD. RE RA c m y b Amritsar, March 29 The Amritsar (Rural) police and the district administration on Saturday demolished the house of notorious bootlegger and drug peddler, which he had constructed on the panchayat land in Bhorsi Rajputa village, falling under the Khalchian police station here. According to the police, the entire family of Ranjodh Singh was allegedly involved in bootlegging and drug peddling. Residents of the village said they had raised the issue of his nefarious activities with the district administration and sought action against him and his family as they had constructed house by encroaching over the pan- chayat land. However, nothing had happened until now, they said, while adding that today, the police and the district administration razed house of the drug peddler. Speaking on the occasion, continued on page 2
