OC PEDDLER HELD WITH HEROIN Phagwara: The police have arrested a 'drugs peddler' and recovered five gm of heroin and 42 intoxicating tablets from his possession on Sunday night. The accused, identified as Mahinder Singh of village Kotrani, was nabbed at a check point set up by the police. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. OC 5,128 pregabalin 2 women among four members of honey-trap gang arrested capsules seized from chemist shop ~10,200, three mobile phones, one car and scooter seized from them Tribune Reporters THE MODUS OPERANDI Tribune News Service Jalandhar, April 6 In a major crackdown under the ongoing ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, the Jalandhar administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal, seized medicines worth Rs 2,14,085 from a chemist shop. The owner was involved in unauthorised sale of drugs prone to misuse as narcotic substances. A joint team of the Health and Police Departments raided Capital Pharma, Shop No. 8, Tilak Nagar Road, Jalandhar, and seized 19 types of allopathic medicines, includ- ing pregabalin capsules, gabapentin capsules/tablets and dicyclomine tablets due to the absence of mandatory purchase and sale records. Aggarwal said the administration has strictly regulated the sale of certain medicines, including pregabalin, gabapentin and anafortan injections to prevent their abuse as narcotics. He further said the inspection team seized 5,128 pregabalin capsules, 1,100 gabapentin capsules, 700 gabapentin tablets and 4,400 dicyclomine tablets. An FIR has been registered against the shop owner and a detailed investigation is underway. The administration had recently sealed an illegal drug de-addiction centre at Jamsher, rescuing 34 youths. Dr Aggarwal reiterated the administration’s commitment to rehabilitating drugaffected individuals and facilitating their reintegration into society. He urged citizens to reach out the district’s de-addiction helpline 0181-2911960 for assistance. Likewise, they can report drug abuse cases on WhatsApp number 9779-100-200, assuring that informants’ identities will be kept confidential. Jalandhar April 6 The Shahkot police have arrested four members of a gang that were ensnaring innocent people in honey traps and extorting money. Those arrested have been identified as Charanjit Singh and Gurbaksh Kaur of Salaichan, Shahkot, Dilbagh Singh, alias Bhullar, of Kot Ise Khan Moga, and Kirandeep Kaur, alias Kiran, of Sucha Singh Nagar, Bathinda. The gang was ensnaring innocent people in honey traps – in the name of extending loans and extorting money from them after shooting videos. Parwindar Kaur, wife of Jagjit Singh and residing at Dariawale village, complained to the police that she was being harassed for dowry since her marriage and forced her to leave the house. oc WOMAN HELD FOR PEDDLING Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have arrested a woman drug peddler on the charge of selling heroin. As much as 17 gram of heroin was recovered from the possession of Jaswindar Kaur, alias Jassi, of Pasla village. A case has been registered against the accused. Jagroop alleged there were already three women and TRIBUNE PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Theft accused escapes in Bholath PHAGWARA, APRIL 6 A youth, arrested in connection with a theft case, escaped from police custody late at night from the lock-up of the Bholath police station. Accused Kaushal Gill was in custody for allegedly stealing Rs 20,000 from Gill Electrical Store near Chowk in Bholath on the night of March 31. The police registered a case against the Home Guard on sentry duty and the absconding accused on statements recorded by the munshi (clerk) on duty. The theft complaint had initially been filed by store owner Manjinderpal Singh, a resident of Khassan, leading to the arrest of Gill, a resident of Bholath. Gill was detained at Bholath after his arrest. However, in the early hours of April 4, around 4 am, he managed to escape from the lock-up. Constable Vikas, who was on duty, reported that the accused was missing and that both lock-up and main gate of three men present at that house, who asked him for tea. They locked him in a room, beat him up and stripped him naked and forcibly made an obscene video involving a woman with the intention to blackmail him. He alleged they then threatened him, took out his ATM and credit cards from his purse and forced him to withdraw Rs 90,000 from the bank. They also took out a check book from his bag and forcibly made him sign two blank checks. He alleged they held him hostage for about 4 hours. A man died after the bike he was riding was hit by a high speed SUV from behind today. The deceased has been identified by Balbir Singh. His cousin Mohit Ram from Sadar Nawanshahr in his complaint said he along with his brother Balbir Singh were going to their home when the accident happened. “The moment our bike was hit, Balbir fell on the road and he suffered serious injuries. The SUV driver fled. People helped us reach the hospital where my cousin was brought declared dead,” he said in his statement. A case under Section 281 and 106 of the BNS has been registered against the unknown person. In another incident that happened yesterday in Mukandpur, Surinder Kumari said she was going to her village Jhingra on her scooty and her brother was riding another one. “He was ahead of me for my safety and I was following him. Suddenly, a bike rider came from the wrong side and collided with my brother’s bike, leaving him seriously injured,” she said. “He was first taken to the Civil Hospital and then was referred to the PGI where he died,” she said. in their possession, humiliated him and threw him out of the house. He alleged they threatened him that if he told the police, they would make his obscene video viral. The police said as per the victim’s complaint the next day, he took the village’s prominent men with him and got himself medically examined for the injuries. On receiving the information, the police registered a case and conducted a preliminary investigation. Taking prompt action, the police have arrested four accused members of the gang. The police said arrested accused Dilbagh Singh had previously committed crime and was out on bail from Bathinda jail since January 1, 2025. The accused are being produced in a court and remand was being obtained. Woman dies after being hit by train Our Correspondent Phagwara, April 6 A woman lost her life after being struck by a Dadarbound train while attempting to cross the railway tracks near Bhagtupura in Phagwara. According to railway officials, the woman was critically injured and was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital by railway staff. Due to the severity of her condition, doctors referred her to a hospital in Jalandhar, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Railway sub-inspector Jot Singh stated that the woman’s body has been kept in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for 72 hours to facilitate identification. Ex-bureaucrat seeks CBI probe into police role in ‘drug-prostitution’ racket Our Correspondent Phagwara, April 6 In a significant development raising questions over the integrity of Punjab’s law enforcement agencies, a former senior bureaucrat Sucha Ram Ladhar, president, BJP SC Morcha Punjab, has written to Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting a CBI probe into an alleged nexus involving senior IPS officers, into drug trafficking and prostitution nexus. The request follows the circulation of a viral audio clip, recently aired on a YouTube news platform ‘The Harpreet Show’, in which a man, allegedly that a senior police officer posted at a sensitive field assignment, was purportedly heard negotiating prices for women with a person suspected to be involved in prostitution. The audio, if verified, could point to serious misconduct at the highest levels of the Punjab Police. In his letter addressed to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the former officer termed the matter “highly sensitive and alarming” and called for an impartial investigation by a central agency, citing the state government’s perceived inaction in similar cases in the past. “This issue does not stand in isolation,” the letter states, while pointing to previous controversies involving IPS officer Raj Jit Singh and Inspector Inderjit Singh, both of whom were absconding in a drug trafficking case. It also has references of the recent arrest and dismissal of a woman constable Amandeep Kaur, posted in Bathinda, who was allegedly caught with heroin. Kapurthala to witness major school infra overhaul from today Eight schools to have science labs and essential facilities under state education mission Ashok Kaura PHAGWARA, APRIL 6 In a determined push to strengthen public education, the government is set to launch extensive infrastructure development works across eight government schools in Kapurthala district from April 7 under the flagship “Punjab Shiksha Kranti” initiative. Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal announced the commencement of the project, stating that the next six weeks will mark a transformative phase for these schools, which will receive new science laboratories, additional classrooms, improved sanitation and fortified boundary walls. Leading the initiative is the School of Eminence at Phagwara, which will undergo a comprehensive renovation at an estimated cost of Rs 43 lakh, along with a new boundary wall constructed for Rs 8 lakh. The Government Girls’ School in Phagwara will also benefit from the construction of a boundary wall worth Rs 2 lakh. In Balairkhanpur, infrastructure enhancement includes the construction of a science lab and classroom renovations with an outlay of Rs 14.51 lakh. Similarly, Dhapai will see the addition of classrooms for Rs 7.51 lakh and new toilet facilities worth Rs 1.66 lakh. The dual campuses of Channa Sher Singh in Sultanpur Lodhi — covering both primary and senior secondary wings — will be equipped with a new science laboratory (Rs 11 lakh) and an additional classroom (Rs 6.26 lakh). Further allocations include Rs 7.51 lakh for classroom construction and Rs c m y b 4.50 lakh for a boundary wall. Meanwhile, Dhaliwal Bet is scheduled to get a nod for a new boundary wall and Government Primary School, Ibrahimwal, will get an additional classroom built at a cost of Rs 7.51 lakh. The “Punjab Shiksha Kranti” campaign is a comprehensive state-led effort to uplift the standards of education through infrastructure modernisation, digital readiness and inclusive learning spaces. DC Panchal said, “This is not just about a physical transformation, it’s about creating environment where students can thrive and teachers can deliver quality education with pride.” The authorities have assured stringent oversight of all civil works to ensure quality and timely execution. The schools are expected to be ready with upgraded facilities before the upcoming academic session. The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
