The seventh occupant, a man gasping for breath, was found partially conscious and claimed that he would be dead in another five minutes. Despite efforts to save him, he later died at Civil Hospital in Sector 6. The man was identified as Parveen Mittal, aged 41, who in his final moments confessed to being heavily in debt and indicated that his entire family ended life in a suicide pact. The police later identified the other deceased as Parveen’s wife Reena, their three minor children — twin daughters Dhruvita and Dilisha, aged around 12, and 14-year-old son Hardik — and his parents Deshraj Mittal and Bimla. TNS Chandigarh, May 27 The Operations Cell of the UT police unearthed an IPL betting racket operating from a rented house in Sector 33 here and arrested four persons, who were part of a syndicate handling financial transactions to the tune of several lakhs of rupees daily. The police also seized a large cache of electronic equipment, purportedly used for betting. A team led by Inspector Ranjit Singh launched a raid following a tip-off about four persons involved in an illicit betting during a live IPL T20 match between Punjab Kings XI and Mumbai Indians on Monday. All of them were arrested during the raid. They were identified as Hardeep Singh (50), alias Jolly, Santosh (19), Bhuvan (25), all residents of Sector 33 here, and Deepak (43), alias Deepu Pepsi, a resident of Sector 20, Panchkula. On searching the premises, the police recovered 43 mobile phones, six laptops, two computer tablets, one LED screen, two Wi-Fi routers, a portable gamble box, and numerous other items associated with betting operations. A case was registered at the Sector 34 police station. It emerged during the investigation that certain members of the syndicate were operating from Dubai, where betting is legal, raising the possibility of international links. The bodies were recovered this morning by a joint team of the Chandigarh and Panchkula police after an overnight search operation. The deceased have been identified as Armaan, aged 15, son of Nawazuddin, and Shad Mohammad, aged 14, son of Anish Mohammad. Both were residents of Raipur Khurd, Chandigarh. The police confirmed that the fathers of the two boys were siblings. According to the police, a group of four teenagers had gone to the Ghaggar on Monday afternoon to take a dip but two of them failed to return, following which a case was registered at the Mauli Jagran police station on the complaint of their family members who reported them as missing. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
