Creating history in the field of bodybuilding in India, Sirsa boy Sunmeet Gill is all set to become the first turbaned athlete to compete at the prestigious Mr. Olympia in Las Vegas this October. His journey, spanning a decade of relentless dedication, has already captivated the bodybuilding community across the region. Like many young boys in Haryana, Sunmeet initially joined a gym to ‘make body’. Soon, his passion evolved into professional bodybuilding. He earned his coveted pro card in 2023 and now competes in the professional league. That Sirsa will be represented at the bodybuilding’s biggest platform, does it unleash a trend of sorts in his home town? “Not really, people still confuse weightlifting with bodybuilding,” he shares. “Hopefully, my stint at this world championship will change that narrative.” Discipline forms the bedrock of Sunmeet’s preparation. “An athlete needs to be very disciplined through the year,” he states. “I take my fitness seriously year around and stay committed to my aim.” His day begins leisurely around 8 or 9 am, allowing his body to naturally wake up and ensure complete rest, before a rigorous regimen sets in. From fasting to cardio and intense gym sessions to ensuring a minimum of 10,000 steps daily, every aspect is followed with the precision. Equally vital are his five daily home-cooked meals heavily leaning on protein from eggs, chicken, whey and rice. “When I began, sticking to a diet plan was an issue,” he reflects, “and now I find it hard not to stick to a diet schedule.” In the ‘growing’ phase, he is open to eating things that The actor awarded Guinness World Record for Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning stunt He set the record for most burning parachute jumps by an individual after jumping out of a helicopter 16 times with a fuel-soaked chute set ablaze in a stunt for the final instalment in the action franchise. “Tom doesn’t just play action heroes — he is an action hero!” said Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records editor-in-chief in a statement. “A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognise his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.” — ANI Split for good? A self-motivated individual, Sunmeet’s inspiration comes from within. “I lead a very regimental, very contented life,” he explains, balancing his training, coaching, endorsements, and even a trading business. His life partner, Raveena, is also a sponsored athlete in the field of bodybuilding. They both meticulously manage their nutritional needs. Despite his siblings settling in Canada and New Zealand, the allure of foreign shores never tempted Sunmeet to leave India. “I visit my brother and sister, but bodybuilding has a better framework here,” he asserts. “From training to food, everything is available and economical. I believe India is the best place to realise my dreams.” His turban, he says, is not just an accessory but a profound connection to his roots and identity. “I am proud to be the first turbaned athlete to participate in Mr. Olympia. Jaskanwal Kaur from Chandigarh showcases a conceptual acrylic painting, titled Song Of Nature. She explains how the painting parallels the journey of life. A new born, pure and untouched, is gradually shaped by flaws just like a river that begins clean but gathers impurities as it flows. Jaskanwal has been painting since the 1970s and has received several accolades in c m y b her career, including the prestigious Amrita Sher-Gil award. Madan Lal, a recipient of Punjab Kala Sanman, displays Urban Angela that bridges the gap between the human and the artificial world through vibrant colours and layered symbolism. Using a musk deer as a metaphor, he explores the search for inner essence within oneself rather than in the outside world. His painting features a parrot, representing conversation and thought. The outcome is a deeply soulful and thought provoking painting. Two acrylic paintings of Aradhna Tendon, whose work has been exhibited across India and abroad, adorns the gallery walls. She has been painting for over three decades. Her artwork blends emotional depth and personal insight. One painting offers a rather domestic narrative, and the other captures poet-saint Kabir in conversation with two female figures. Both a reflection of inner self and spiritual contemplation.
