TNS Panchkula, July 5 In a novel way to tackle the growing drug menace, the Panchkula police have launched a special programme to honour the addicts who will shun drugs and inspire others to return to the mainstream society. “Those who quit drugs and inspire others will be honoured,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Srishti Gupta while talking to The Tribune. She said the police have not only intensified the offensive against drug traffickers but have also been helping people overcome drug addiction. The recent downpour had caused extensive damage to roads and public property in the tricity. “Light to moderate rain is likely at most places on July 6 and 7 and at many places on July 8 and 9 in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana,” said the weathermen, while predicting heavy rainfall (7 cm or more) very likely from July 6 to 9 at isolated places over northern and eastern parts of Punjab and northern, eastern and southern Haryana, including Chandigarh during this spell. They said very heavy rain (12 cm or more) is also likely at isolated places on July 6 and 7 over parts of Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Ambala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar and other parts of Punjab and Haryana. While the tricity region, comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula remained dry on Saturday, the IMD observed moderate to heavy rain at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana. Meanwhile, the day temperature in Chandigarh today dipped slightly while the night temperature shot up by 0.5 degree during the past 24 hours. The rain caused road cave-ins, uprooting of trees and poles and major disruption in power and water supply, throwing the normal life out of gear for three days in a row. The serious cases were admitted to the de-addiction centres for further treatment,” the DCP divulged. The police have constituted three special teams to organise regular medical camps with the help of the Health Department to identify and treat addicts across the district. Awareness programmes were also held in schools, colleges and social institutions to protect the youth from addiction and spread the message of creating a drug-free society. On International Day Against Drug Abuse, the DCP honoured the individuals who had helped the police in this mission, especially those who quit drugs and are now helping others to do the same. These individuals were symbolically gifted plants for their positive contribution. Continued on page 5 MC to spend ~50 lakh on roads damaged in rain Tribune News Service Chandigarh, July 5 The Municipal Corporation has floated a Rs 50lakh tender for repair of the roads damaged in the recent rain spell. The first rain of the monsoon caused extensive damage to roads at many places. A major portion of the road from Dadumajra to Maloya and Sector 47/48 had caved in during the rain. A similar damage was also reported on the Sector 14/ 15 road and Sector 31/47 roundabout. A survey carried out by the MC revealed the roads were badly damaged at 15 places. The roads in Manimajra and villages also developed big potholes. A city resident, RK Garg, said the amount of Rs 50 lakh is too less to repair roads properly. Contractor held for faking ~1L robbery Tribune News Service Mohali, July 5 The police have arrested a local resident, Jatinder Pandit, a contractor hailing from Bihar, for faking a robbery to settle a score with his acquaintances, whom he owed money. The police said the suspect had borrowed Rs 50,000 from his acquaintances. On July 4, he made a call to police helpline 112, claiming that he was robbed of Rs 1 lakh and his bike. The police investigated the matter and found the call to be fake. A case was registered against the contractor at the IT City police station. The DSP (City 2), Harsimran Singh Bal, said, “The suspect was produced before the court today.” The police said a similar fake call was received on June 29 in which a person was booked. 520 kg of banned ~13-lakh push to revive laser show at Sector 17 fountain A MAJOR TOURIST plastic seized in UT ATTRACTION Ramkrishan Upadhyay Tribune News Service Chandigarh, July 5 The MC seized a massive quantity of banned plastic material from a shop in Sector 20. A team comprising sanitary inspectors Himmat Singh, Lokesh Meena and Ashish Malik, and sanitary supervisor Amar Rana conducted a raid at Peekay Plastic and confiscated 520 kg of noncompostable plastic. The seized material was transported to the dry waste processing plant for shredding. The action was part of the MC drive to eliminate the supply and use of banned plastic across the city. The banned plastic being seized from a shop in Sector 20. MC Commissioner Amit Kumar warned that any sale or distribution of prohibited plastic would attract heavy penalties and legal consequences. — TNS Chandigarh, July 5 Visitors to Sector 17 here will soon get to enjoy the laser show on a water screen near the musical fountain at the Plaza with the Municipal Corporation issuing a tender for the operation and maintenance of the setup. The show, which is a major tourist attraction, has not been held for the past many days. The Rs 13-lakh tender was floated after local councillor Saurabh Joshi took up the matter of reviving the show with the higher authorities. It will help rejuve- nate the Plaza. Sector 17 is one of the places visited by a lot of tourists every day. The traders are committed to providing all support to rejuvenate the Plaza and make it a major tourist spot. The fountain has not been functioning for many days, he said. Another trader said the fountain had been built at cost of over Rs 3 crore 10 years ago. The MC must ensure that it should run properly. It has not been cleaned for years. He said it was a welcome step that the MC had finally woken up and decided to float the tender for running the laser-show. Chander Bajaj, another trader, said after visiting Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake and Capitol Complex, tourists come here to enjoy the evening and shopping.
