The accused have been identified as Bindro of Chak Hathianna village, Bobby of Tarewala village, Ferozepur, and Saabi of Ismailpur village. The mother of the victim complained to the police that the accused Manga and Saabi conspired with Bindro to kidnap and raped her minor daughter on July 25. Raids are being conducted to arrest them. OC MAN BOOKED FOR CHEATING Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked a resident on charges of breach of trust and cheating. The accused has been identified as Rannjodh Singh of Mohalla Dherian, Shahkot. Suresh Chandar, a resident of Vikas Nagar, Shahkot, complained to the police that the accused signed an agreement with him for selling his a shop and received Rs 31 lakh for the sale, but did not register the sale deed, thus cheating him and threatening him with dire consequences. OC TWO HELD FOR STEALING BIKE Phagwara: : The Nurmahal police have arrested two miscreants on the charge of stealing a motorcycle. The accused has been identified as Akash Deep and Rahul, both residents of Umrewal Billa village under Mehatpur police station. The accused were coming from the Phillaur side, driving a stolen motorcycle and were arrested at a naka. The police also arrested a thief from Sagowal village. Meanwhile, the Nakodar Sadar police also booked unidentified thieves for stealing gold jewellery from the house of Rannbir Singh of Thabalke village. OC BOOKED FOR CAUSING DEATH Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked an unidentified driver on the charge of causing death by negligence and rash driving. Surjit Singh, a resident of Pati Laksian Malsian village, complained to the police that an SUV driver hit his motorcycle on July 17, seriously injuring him and his wife, who succumbed to her injuries in a hospital. OC RAPE ACCUSED PO ARRESTED Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a proclaimed offender (PO) absconding for the last two years. The accused has been identified as Yatin alias Aman, a resident of Padda colony in Lohian Khas, and wanted in a case of raping a minor. The case was registered in September 2023. The police also arrested PO Gurpreet Singh of Dalla village in Kapurthala. OC WOMAN HELD FOR SELLING LIQUOR Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked a woman on charges of selling illicit liquor. Investigating officer Sarwann Singh said eight bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from the house of the accused, identified as Dalveer Kaur Nikki, a resident of Mulle Wal village, who managed to flee from the spot. She had reportedly refused his offer of marriage. Sukhvinder Verma, who had lost her husband and is a mother of two, is a resident of Ekta Nagar, Phase 2, in the Rama Mandi area of Jalandhar. She was attacked by Bassa, a vegetable seller, at her house. The accused reportedly retrieved petrol from his motorbike and flung it on the woman and her two children and set the trio on fire. Sukhvinder has reportedly ■ Vegetable vendor Bassa, who is a resident of Bazigar Basti at Rama Mandi, visited Ekta Nagar here to sell vegetables daily ■ He started pressuring Sukhvinder, whose husband had died, to marry him but she refused him ■ On one occasion, the victim had even slapped him when he reportedly misbehaved with the woman ■ Angry with it, Bassa resorted to this extreme step sustained 50 per cent burn injuries while her children have also suffered burns in the attack. Her daughter’s legs have also been burnt. Bassa, who is a resident of Bazigar Basti at Rama Mandi, used to visit the woman daily to sell vegetables. He started pressuring her to marry him but she refused him. However, after being slapped by her recently, Bas- sa resorted to this extreme step to take revenge. The Rama Mandi police have booked Bassa under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the BNS. Bassa is at large. Sukhvinder was taken to the Civil Hospital in Jalandhar by her kin and neighbours but she was eventually referred to the Medical College, Amritsar, where she is under treatment. In his statement to the police, Sukhvinder’s brother Balvinder Singh, resident of Kaki village, stated that his younger sister had been married to Bunty who had died some time after their wedding. For the past five months, Sukhvinder had been residing at Ekta Vihar where Bassa began harassing her. SHO Navdeep Singh said, “The woman received 32 per cent burn injuries and was saved due to the timely intervention of her neighbours and her kin. She is currently under treatment at Amritsar. The accused has been booked for attempt to murder and the police are on the lookout for him and raids are on. He will be caught soon.” Jalandhar, August 3 Days after three deaths at the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, due to a fault in the oxygen supply and the subsequent suspension of three doctors and dismissal of two personnel (a doctor and a plant operator) by the Health Minister, doctors on Saturday suspended OPD work for three hours in protest against the alleged misbehaviour by a patient’s kin with an Emergency Medical Officer (EMO) on duty. While doctors at the Civil Hospital have already been on the edge after the July 27th incident of three deaths and the subsequent inquiry, sources at the Health Department said everyone from the staff to higher-ups has been treading with caution amid widespread distress within the staff. The suspension of OPD work happened a day after the PCMS Association state members visited the hospital to take feedback from the suspended doctors. The suspended doctors, consultant anaesthetist (who wrote to PCMSA), Dr Rajkumar, SMO Dr Surjit, among other remained present to interact with the PCMSA team. On the same night, an EMO levelled allegations that attendants of a burn patient had misbehaved with her and also vandalised the property after they were asked to take the patient to another hospital due to the gravity of the injuries. Doctors shall continue work as usual on Monday after they were pacified by the administration and the authorities. SMO Dr Varinder Thind said, “The incident happened around 11 pm on Friday night. The woman patient was serious and had received 49 per cent burn injuries. It was not possible for us to treat her here. She had to be taken to another hospital. But her relatives abused and harassed the doctor. I reached the hospital by 2.20 am and we immediately took up the matter to the police. We have put up a demand for extra security at all vulnerable emergency, trauma, maternity wards, etc. Since our demands for security has been addressed and an FIR lodged, we won’t be holding any strike on Monday.” Asked if the ongoing inquiry has any bearing on their work, Thind said, “If one’s boss has been suspended, it naturally affects you. Doctors are a demoralised. But we are all working with utmost care and doing our best. Things are steadily improving. One person died in this accident while two pesons were seriously injured who were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Mukerian. ASI Gurinderjit Singh said an oil tanker was going from Pathankot to Jalandhar around 10.30 pm on Saturday night. When the tanker reached the spot, it went out of control and hit the people protesting on the roadside, killing one person and seriously injuring two. Phagwara, August 3 In a breakthrough against the illegal liquor trade, the police have arrested two individuals and seized a substantial quantity of illicit liquor and distillation equipment following a raid in village Rurka Kalan. The action was taken based on a tip-off received by ASI Amandeep Singh, in-charge of Rurka Kalan police post, who, along with his team, conducted a swift operation at the drums akso seized residence of Bahadur Singh. During the raid, the police apprehended Baljit Singh and Rajesh Yadav, alias Gurinder, both residents of Rurka Kalan. A liquor still was found operating on the premises along with 1,200 litres of lahan, 1,50,000 ml of illicit liquor, three gas cylinders, a distillery tub, a gas stove, and eight drums used in the illegal operation. Two others, identified as Bahadur Singh and Sukhdev Singh, both sons of Pooran Singh and residents of the same village, managed to flee the scene and are absconding. According to the police, the accused had been involved in smuggling liquor from the banks of the Sutlej and supplying it across local villages. Due to the lucrative nature of the business, they had reportedly set up a full-scale illicit liquor manufacturing operation within the premises of their own residence. Inspector Sikander Singh Virk confirmed that a case has been registered under Sections 61-1-14 of the Excise Act and Sections 123 and 62 of the BNS Act. Further investigation revealed that Sukhdev Singh has five previous criminal cases registered against him, while Bahadur Singh has two prior cases. Navjot Singh Sultanpur Lodhi man dies in Dubai road accident Our Correspondent Phagwara, August 3 Navjot Singh, a resident of Sultanpur Lodhi, who had been working in Dubai as a tanker driver, died yesterday when the tanker he was driving overturned. Although he was rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to injuries before any medical intervention could be provided. Navjot had moved to Dubai in November 2024 in search of better employment opportunities. He was the only brother of two sisters. His father, a Granthi Singh serving at the local gurdwara, was reportedly at the gurdwara when the family received the news. They are seeking assistance from both the Centre and Punjab Government to facilitate the repatriation of Navjot’s body to India. The family hopes that the government will act swiftly to ensure that Navjot’s remains are brought home without delay.
