In collaboration with the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), the civic body carried out inspections across markets and issued challans to several shopkeepers found violating the statewide ban. The drive is part of the corporation’s broader campaign to curb plastic pollution and encourage sustainable alternatives. Dr Gupta said plastic waste poses a grave threat to both environment and public health, and stressed the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the issue. “The Municipal Corporation is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the ban and motivating citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices,” she noted. Officials have urged residents and business owners to replace plastic with cloth and jute bags, emphasizing that the transition is vital for the city’s long-term environmental health. Regular inspections and awareness campaigns will continue in the coming weeks, aimed at reinforcing compliance and sensitizing citizens about the dangers of single-use plastic. Phagwara, August 19 A man from Hoshiarpur district, employed in Kuwait for several years, allegedly died by suicide after prolonged marital discord and harassment. Acting on the complaint by his mother Jaswinder Kaur of Sham Nagar, Phagwara, the police have registered a case of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code against his wife and in-laws. According to the statement lodged by Jaswinder Kaur, her son Pavanjit Singh had been working in Kuwait for the past 14–15 years and used to visit India during annual holidays. Around 14 years ago, Pavanjit married Sukhvinder Kaur, daughter of Ravinder Pal Singh of village Divida, Rihana, Hoshiarpur. However, the couple had been living separately for the last seven years, with Sukhvinder staying at her parental home. Jaswinder alleged that during his visits to India, Pavanjit often expressed distress over his wife’s refusal to allow him to meet or speak with their children. He reportedly told his mother that Sukhvinder insisted him to first transfer all his property in her name before permitting such contact. She further claimed that Sukhvinder frequently spoke to other men over the phone and uploaded photographs on social media with the intention of harassing Pavanjit. On August 12, Pavanjit reportedly called his mother, saying he was under immense mental stress due to constant humiliation and harassment by his wife, father-in-law Ravinder Pal Singh, and mother-in-law Kamla Devi. He allegedly conveyed that he could no longer bear the situation and would end his life. Shortly thereafter, he sent a handwritten suicide note and a video message to his mother, citing his ordeal. Two days later, on August 14, Jaswinder’s nephew Dharaminder Kumar, who also resides in Kuwait, informed the family that Pavanjit had consumed a poisonous substance, leading to his death. The police have registered a case against Sukhvinder Kaur, Ravinder Pal Singh, and Kamla Devi for abetment to suicide.
