The commission has issued the directions when the issue was raised in a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee today Meanwhile, in a separate order the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has shifted seven sub-inspectors from the Enforcement Department. The order issued by the Commissioner said that the services of the following sub-inspector posted in the Enforcement Wing are withdrawn with immediate effect and is directed to report to the establishment branch without delay for further duties. Deepankar Sharda Tribune News Service Chandigarh, August 22 Panjab University authorities released the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) election schedule today. The voting will be held on September 3, followed by the announcement of results the same day. As per the schedule, the voting will start at 9.30 am and the results will be out by the evening. With the official announcement of the poll schedule, the code of conduct has come into force on the campus. “The elections will be held on September 3. The voting will commence at 9.30 am and the counting will start by 12 noon. With this announcement, the code of conduct has come into force, and all political groups have been asked to stop rallies. Using print material and any other activity will require the permission of the competent authority,” said Prof Amit Chauhan, Dean Student Welfare (DSW). As the admission process is still underway, the total strength of the student voters will be officially declared after August 31. “We will have roughly 16,500 voters. As the admission process is still underway, we are yet to get official numbers. Also, the students, who will get admissions till September 2, will be allowed to vote in the PUCSC elections. The campus is already witnessing nakas, one-way traffic Eloped UP couple found dead in hotel Families had opposed their relationship on religious grounds Tribune News Service Chandigarh, August 22 A 24-year-old man and his 17year-old female friend were found dead in a hotel room here on Thursday, days after they eloped from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The police suspect that the couple ended their lives by consuming poison. They youth has been identified as Arshad, a factory worker. His friend hailed from Begarazpur village in Muzaffarnagar district. According to officials, the two had run away from home on August 18 after their families opposed their relationship on the religious grounds. The girl reportedly left home for school that day but never returned. A missing person complaint was lodged the following day with the Muzaffarnagar police. Police sources said the couple checked into a hotel in Daria around 3 am on Thursday. Barely an hour later, both were found dead in their round- room. The hotel staff alerted the Daria police post. A police team arrived at the spot around 5 am and shifted the bodies to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. Senior Superintendent of Police, UP Sanjay Kumar, , said, “The girl’s family had filed an abduction complaint against Arshad on August 19. We have initiated inquest proceedings and informed the Muzaffarnagar police about the deaths.” Sources added that certain Hindu activists had exerted pressure on the Muzaffarnagar police to trace the couple. According to the Daria police, a suicide note was found near their bodies. It reads, “As their families refused to marry them, they took this step on their own.” “The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their respective family members after the post-mortem, and further investigation is under way,” shared a senior officer of the Chandigarh Police. The other winners included continued on page 5 Man awarded 10-year RI in NDPS case Tribune News Service Chandigarh, August 22 A local court has sentenced a 25-year-old resident of Sector 56 here to 10-year rigorous imprisonment in an Was arrested with 11 buprenormorphine injections of 2 ml each NDPS case registered five years ago. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict, Kishan. The police arrested the accused on January 16, 2020, with 11 injections of buprenormorphine of 2 ml each, which fall under commercial quantity. After completing the investigation, the police filed a challan against the accused. Finding a prima facie case, the court framed charges under Section 22 of the NDPS Act, to which the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed a trial. After hearing the arguments, the court sentenced the accused to 10-year rigorous imprisonment, while rejecting his plea for leniency. The court said the narcotics are spoiling the future of the youth of the country and harming every fabric of society. The union said it would raise issues faced by students, including fee hike, lack of hostel rights, delay in faculty recruitment, withdrawal of scholarships and growing restrictions on the freedom of expression on the campus. “Student elections are increasingly dominated by money and influence rather than real issues. Our fight is to bring back student-centric and progressive politics to the campus,” stated the PSU (Lalkaar). The group also alleged that fascist and communal forces are attempting to polarize the campus atmosphere and vowed to counter such trends through its campaign. In the run-up to the PUCSC elections, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today launched a ‘Book Keeper’, a bookmark for students. The initiative highlights ABVP’s focus on academic enrichment and student welfare. The bookmark, designed with motivational quote and reminders, was distributed among students across the departments. Campus president Parvindra Singh Negi said the aim was to empower students with knowledge and culture of learning. The bookmark is symbolic of our larger mission to create a strong academic atmosphere in the university. INDIAN NATIONAL STUDENTS ORGANISATION Team INSO (Indian National Students Organisation) donated an Interactive Digital White Board to the Uni- versity Institute of Fashion Technology (UIFT). The initiative was spearheaded by PUCSC secretary Vineet Yadav and candidate for the post Vishesh Dhaka, who have been consistently working for the academic enrichment and technological progress of the university’s departments. SHOT IN THE ARM FOR SOPU The Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) received a major boost when senior student leader Deep Somal, along with his colleagues from the Gandhi Group Students Union (active in Panjab University since 2015), officially joined SOPU. “This step shows the growing realisation among students that only genuine student parties can save the dignity of the university and secure its future,” said Balraj Sidhu, president of SOPU.
