INBRIEF RELIGIOUS FEELINGS HURT Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have booked many persons, including women, on charges of outraging religious feelings. Investigating Officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said that the accused have been identified as Kuldeep Kaur alias Dalip Kaur, Mandeep Singh and Sonu, all residents of Shalimar Bagh near Mohalla Lakshmi Nagar, Kapurthala, and their six unidentified women accomplices. Chain Singh, a resident of Sangowal village, complained to the police that the accused barged into his house on November 3, assaulted him, pulled his beard and threatened him with dire consequences. The IO said that a case has been registered against the accused . — OC FARMER’S MURDER: 1 HELD Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a villager on the charge of murdering a farmer. SHO Gursharan Singh said that the accused has been identified as Akashdeep alias Kalu, a resident of Mureedwal village. Bhupindar Singh, a resident of Amargarh village in Ferozepur, had complained to the police that the accused and his two accomplices murdered his brother-in-law Amardeep Singh, a resident of Chak Chela village on November 3 in his fields, where he went to plant his potato crop. The SHO said a case was registered against the accused. — OC FOUR BOOKED FOR BURNING STUBBLE Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have booked two farmers on the charge of burning paddy stubble in the fields. SHO Gursharan Singh said that the alleged accused have been identified as Wasann Singh, a resident of Kangkhurd village and Tarlochan Singh of Raiwal Bet village. The SHO said that the nodal officers concerned have sent their reports to the police which were verified and examined at the places of occurrence. The SHO said that the accused had set afire paddy stubble in the fields and violated a government order in this regard and polluted the atmosphere. Cases under section 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the BNS have been registered against the accused. — OC TRAVEL AGENT BOOKED Phagwara: Nakodar city police have booked a travel agent for allegedly duping a Nurmahal villager of Rs 50 lakh on the pretext of sending his son abroad. The sudden shooting left residents in fear, reigniting concerns about the rising criminal activities in the region. According to preliminary reports, an unidentified assailant opened fire near the school, injuring one person. The victim has been identified as Karan Kumar, a resident of Phillaur village, who sustained a bullet injury in his thigh. He was first taken to a local hospital and later referred to Jalandhar for advanced medical treatment. Police officials reached the scene soon after receiving information. According to Sikh organisations in Phagwara, they received a call from another town informing them that a Scorpio car, bearing the name of Taruna Dal Doaba Nihang Singh Jathebandi, was parked outside the shop. When representatives of the Sikh groups reached the spot, they found a man in traditional Nihang dress and a woman inside the vehicle. Leaders of the Sikh groups claimed that the man, identified as Surinder Singh, a resident of Hoshiarpur, was consuming meat and alcohol in the vehicle. When confronted, he allegedly misbehaved and attempted to attack them with a kirpan. Members present at the spot also claimed to have recovered a fake pistol and sharpedged knife from him. Witnesses said that during the scuffle, Sikh volunteers removed the man's Nihang attire. Some locals reportedly assaulted him before the police arrived. The woman accompanying the accused reportedly told bystanders that she was picked up by the man from outside Basra Palace and was supposed to be paid for accompanying him. The man, meanwhile, apologised on camera and said the woman was a relative. Cops from city police station, led by SI Darshan Singh, arrived after receiving a call from Sikh leaders and took the accused and the vehicle into custody. A case has been registered.
