Dhir had visited Dubai in October, and weeks after his return, he announced plans for a Dubai-style food street in Company Bagh. More recently, he arranged for fully-grown date palms to be planted along roadsides in Jalandhar. These date palms were planted in the Old Baradari locality along the residences of officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police, SSP Rural, District and Sessions Judge, and other top officials, right up to the entry point of Hansraj Stadium. House No. 1, Old Baradari—earlier earmarked for the Divisional Commissioner, where CM Bhagwant Mann was reportedly planning to shift—also Thieves target restaurant, make away with goods worth lakhs Phagwara, November 29 Thieves made away with valuables worth more than Rs 5 lakh from a restaurant located near Bhola Rai Chowk on the Phagwara bypass. The incident came to light when the owner of one of the top restaurants on the bypass received information early in the morning that two motorcycle-borne individuals were removing inverter batteries from his premises. When the owner reached the restaurant, he discovered that three air-conditioners, an LCD, cameras, fans, broken items, inverter batteries and several other expensive goods had already been stolen. According to him, the estimated value of the stolen property is around Rs 5 lakh. The restaurant owner revealed that the establishment had been closed for the past few months. Taking advantage of the situation, the thieves reportedly entered from the rear side of the building, executed the theft and fled. — OC DATE PALMS PLANTED ALONG OFFICIALS’ RESIDENCES Fully-grown date palms have been planted in the Old Baradari locality along the residences of officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner of Police, SSP Rural, District and Sessions Judge, and other top officials, right up to the entry point of Hansraj Stadium. fell along this path. The trees were planted in close proximity along the edges of the pathway to beautify the already green part of the city, but no effort was made to clear the garbage dumping sites along this route to enhance its scenic appeal. The move drew sharp criticism from the Opposition. District Congress Committee (Urban) president Rajinder Beri condemned the beautification exercise as completely wasteful, stating, “Had the MC provided all required basic civic amenities to residents, it could have considered such ideas. Our sewage systems remained clogged for four months. Our roads were in tattered condition. Our streetlights did not function properly. Amid all this, we planted fully-grown palm trees, which are not even native to Punjab. Big landlords may plant date palms to add charm to their buildings, but was it not ironic for the MC to do so?” Mayor Vaneet Dhir responded, “It seemed the Congress leader did not want Jalandhar to look posh and beautiful. We bought these trees in bulk from a Saharanpur-based contractor at Rs 6,500 each, with an additional Rs 2,000 for transportation and planting, making the total cost just Rs 8,500 per tree. Most beautification in the city was done for free by sponsor companies using CSR funds, so that should not have been a problem. The way ex-MLA Beri attacked me or my political rival and halqa in-charge Nitin Kohli clearly showed he was upset with our progress. He should have found some other agenda.” 3 nabbed for sheltering assailants in AAP leader Raju’s house firing case Ashok Kaura Phagwara, November 29 Phagwara police arrested three persons—Ghanshyam Tiwari, his mother Neeraj Kumari, and brother Deepak Tiwari—for allegedly sheltering and financing the main assailants involved in the late-night firing on the residence of AAP leader and Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh coordinator Daljit Raju. The arrests were made in Yamunanagar within 24 hours of the incident, which took place around 1:13 am on November 27 when two masked men fired multiple shots at Raju’s house in Darvesh village before fleeing under cover of darkness. Raju, his wife, and their young daughter were asleep on the first floor when bullets shattered glass railings and windows, but the family escaped unharmed. CCTV footage recovered from the site showed the attackers arriving on a motorcycle, approaching the house on foot, and throwing a fourpage note reading “Kala Rana Group — 5 Crore,” indicating a possible extortion threat. The police also nominated Shubham Pandit, son of Ghanshyam Tiwari, who remained absconding as multiple raid teams pursued the prime assailants. SSP Gaurav Toora confirmed the arrests and stated that the trio was remanded to three days’ police custody for further interrogation. He asserted that no stone would be left unturned to nab the main shooters and warned criminal gangs to desist from unlawful activities. The firing triggered panic among residents of Darvesh village and prompted intensified police patrolling. Senior police officers, along with Lok Sabha MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal and halka in-charge Harnoor Singh Maan, visited the crime scene while investigations continued into possible angles of extortion, gang rivalry and targeted intimidation. NRI association condemns attack Phagwara, November 29 The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemned the shocking attack on the residence of AAP leader and Yudh Nasheya Virudh Phagwara Coordinator, Daljit Raju, in Darvesh village near Phagwara. NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal expressed deep concern, stating that if leaders of the ruling party themselves were unsafe in their own homes, ordinary people could not possibly feel secure. He said the incident reflected a disturbing rise in organised crime, extortion networks, and fearless criminal activity across the state, which raised questions about the government’s ability to maintain public safety. NAPA urged the government and police to launch a high-level investigation immediately and arrest the attackers. — OC City girls shine with gold medals KHELO INDIA GAMES Tribune News Service Jalandhar, November 29 Two girls from the city have won medals at the 5th edition of Khelo India University Games-2025 that concluded in Rajasthan on Friday.
