INBRIEF FLAG MARCHES IN NAKODAR Phagwara: In view of the rural elections, flag marches were held by the police in Phagwara, Nakodar, Shahkot and Phillaur last night. The police carried out massive flag marches across all villages. The primary objective of the marches was to ensure peaceful, fair and fearfree block samiti and zila parishad elections. During the march, citizens were encouraged to exercise their right to vote without any fear and cooperate with the police in maintaining peace and harmony. OC TWO ARRESTED WITH HEROIN Phagwara: The police, near Kapurthala railway station, spotted youth Joga Singh who turned back upon seeing them and threw a packet into bushes. He was caught and the packet was found to contain 10 gram of heroin. In a separate operation at a hi-tech naka near Goindwal Sahib bridge, the police intercepted scooter rider Sukhjeet Singh, who appeared nervous. A packet with 5 gram of heroin was recovered from him. Both were arrested and cases registered. OC Deepkamal Kaur A tractor-trolly fell in a canal in Phagwara. Youth killed, one injured as tractor falls into canal Our Correspondent Phagwara, December 11 A youth was killed and another critically injured in an accident near the Panashta canal in Phagwara on Thursday morning. The accident took place when a tractor transporting a sand-laden trolley reportedly lost control and plunged into the canal. According to reports, the vehicle’s balance suddenly shifted as the driver attempted to apply the brakes upon reaching the canal bridge. The tractor skidded and slipped into the canal, causing the trolley to overturn. Two of the youths travelling on the tractor were trapped under the overturned trolley and suffered severe injuries. Chabbewal MLA Dr Ishank Chabbewal, who happened to be passing through the area that time, assisted in sending the injured to the Civil Hospital in Phagwara and alerted the police. A police team soon reached the spot and with the help of locals, rescued the victims. At the hospital, doctors declared one of the youths, identified as Jaswant, brought dead. The other victim, Ram Chander, was found to be in a critical condition and was referred to a higher medical facility for specialised treatment. Raja, a witness who was also on the tractor but escaped with minor injuries, told reporters that they were transporting sand from village Bham to Narur when the accident occurred. The police have launched further investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the mishap. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 11 A day after Jalandhar North Congress MLA Bawa Henry had threatened to demolish the foundation stones laid in the city, Aam Aadmi Party leaders remained wary of the situation. They even got the police deployed to protect the foundation stones. Congress leaders had been sore over incorporating the names of the AAP ward candidates, who had lost the MC polls, in the foundation stones while ignoring the sitting councillors of the Congress. During the protest of the Congress outside MC office yesterday, Henry said they would first raze the foundation stone in the Reru locality this morning. This was the same site in Ward No. 2 where the name of Congress councillor Harpreet Walia had been omitted from the plaque during the inauguration of the sewage pipeline project. AAP ward in-charge Vijay Bhatia’s name, however, had been put up. The Congress had been terming it unjustified and unconstitutional. The accused has been identified as Vipin Kumar of Samrai village under Sadar Jamsher police station. A lighter, silver paper and plastic pipes used for consuming contraband were recovered from his possession. A case under section 27/61/85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. OC MAN HELD FOR BURGLARY Phagwara: The police have arrested a person on the charge of stealing household items. The accused has been identified as Guljit Singh, alias Shindu, of Burj Hassan village. Sukhwant Singh, a resident of the same village, had complained to the police that the accused and his accomplice stole household items from his house. Sukhwindar Singh of Littaran village complained to the police that he had parked his motorcycle near Gurdwara Mallarri from where it was stolen. OC Jalandhar, December 11 A masked thief struck at popular cafe Tan Coffee near Model Town’s Mata Rani Chowk and stole about Rs 40,000 this morning. The thief entered from the terrace on the third floor of the under-construction building around 8 am and took away the cash from the counter by tying it all in a redcolour. The crime was captured on the CCTV wherein a tall, lean man is seen wearing black clothes, black woollen cap and gloves while collecting the cash. Cops reached the spot and started investigation. Rajiv Duggal, president of the Model Market Association, said a similar theft, wherein the criminal had landed inside Apple showroom from the terrace of the under-construction building, had occured in Model Town a few days back. Thief strikes at cafe, loots ~40K Phagwara,December 11 DC–cum–District Election Officer of Kapurthala Amit Kumar Panchal on Thursday reviewed the arrangements for the upcoming Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections. Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora and other senior officials were also present during the inspection. Panchal said the district administration had completed all necessary preparations to ensure that the elections were conducted in a fair, transparent, and peaceful manner. A total of 661 polling booths have been set up across the district, and training for polling parties had been completed. He added that adequate arrangements had been made for the movement and security of polling teams. The elections for 10 Zila Parishad zones and 88 zones of five Block Samitis will be held on 14 December from 8 from 2017-22”. Dhall has been a former Congress councillor. Gold, cash stolen ED arrests pharma firm from cop’s house owner in PMLA case Kapurthala, December 11 Several household items, jewellery, and cash were allegedly stolen after burglars broke into the residence of a police official. According to the complaint filed by Manpreet Kaur, who works as a Safai Sewak at the city police station, she and her husband, Parvinder Singh — an employee at the Dana Mandi, Kapurthala — had locked their home around 9 am before leaving for their duties. Kaur stated that she returned home around 5 pm, discovering that the main lock of the quarter was still intact, but the internal cup- boards were found ransacked. She also noticed that the balcony door latch and protective grill had been broken. Upon checking the house, Kaur reported that gold earrings weighing nearly 2 gram, her daughter’s silver bangles and anklets, one gold chain, one silver chain, Rs 5,000, and an Apple mobile phone belonging to her brother Akashdeep Singh were missing. The complainant stated that Akashdeep, an employee in Moga, had been staying with them. The police confirmed that an FIR has been registered. — OC Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 11 The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Jalandhar Zonal Office, has arrested Abhishek Kumar, who was found to be involved in generation and acquisition of proceeds of crime through illegal sale of psychotropic tablets such as tramadol and alprazolam, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002. The accused was arrested on Tuesday and was produced before the Special Court (PMLA), Mohali, which grant- c m y b ed the ED his six-day custody. The ED initiated investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by the Punjab Police under various Sections of NDPS Act 1985 relating to the large-scale inter-state trafficking of psychotropic tablets and capsules. A search action was conducted at 16 premises linked with Abhishek Kumar and other entities which resulted in the seizure of various incriminating records. The ED investigation revealed that the middle men viz wholesalers and retailers were procuring huge quantities of psychotropic tablets from pharmaceutical firms Biogenetic Drugs Pvt. Ltd, CB Healthcare, Smilax Pharmachem Drug Industries, Aster Pharma and Soul Health Care and were diverting it for sale in black market at high cost than the retail price, through drug peddlers, generating huge proceeds of crime (POC). Abhishek through his firm Shree Shyam Medical Agency procured bulk quantities of these psychotropic tablets from wholesalers/manufacturers and illegally sold approximately 75 per cent of the stock. Hi-tech machines for spot water bill collection unveiled Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 11 The Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, launched the latest Android-based PoS (Point of Sale) machines for on-thespot water supply and sewerage bill collection. The system was launched today by Mohinder Bhagat, Minister of Defence Services Welfare, Freedom Fighters & Horticulture, along with Mayor Vaneet Dhir. The Municipal Corporation has been using GPRS-based PoS machines since 2016 and with advancements in technology, the corporation has now upgraded to the latest Android-based PoS devices equipped with smarter, stronger, and more userfriendly features. During the launch ceremony, the minister handed over the upgraded PoS machines to the water supply and sewerage billing collection field staff, marking the beginning of a more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven billing system.
