Later, three women accused were arrested. A case under Sections 121(1), 126(2), 132, 263 and 3(5) of the BNS has been registered. TNS MAN HELD FOR SNATCHING Chandigarh: Suresh Bahadur has been arrested in a snatching case under Sections 304 and 317(2) of the BNS. Jaydev Manna, a resident of Manimajra, had reported that a man snatched Rs 2,500 and a post office passbook from his son. TNS Three killed as car hits bike in Fatehgarh Sahib Fatehgarh Sahib, May 10 Three motorcycle-borne men were killed on the spot in an accident near Hindupur village in the district on Saturday night. Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Singh, from the Badali Ala Singh police station, said the incident occurred around 11 pm when a speeding car hit the motorcycle from behind. All three riders died on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Avtar Singh, Satwinder Singh and Mohan Singh, all residents of Bibipur village. The victims were reportedly travelling from Badali Ala Singh area to their native village when the accident took place near Hindupur village. The ASI said a police team reached the spot soon after receiving information and shifted the bodies to the Civil Hospital. A case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace the car driver. Meanwhile, the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families after post-mortem. — OC 53.4% turnout in PanchkulaMC elections Fate of 6 mayoral candidates, 87 ward nominees sealed | Counting on May 13 from 8 am Gaurav Kanthwal VOTER TURNOUT Tribune News Service Mohali, May 10 The fate of six mayoral candidates and 87 ward councillor nominees of the Panchkula Municipal Corporation has been sealed with a 53.4 per cent voter turnout recorded in 20 wards of the civic body till 6 pm today. As many as 1,10, 702 of the total 2,07,444 votes were cast at 204 polling booths set up by the state Election Commission within the Panchkula municipal limits. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am on May 13. Polling remained peaceful with no major incident of EVM malfunction, poll-related violence or queue management coming to the fore. The rural area electorate kept the tempo high throughout the day this time too, while the urban voters gave a tepid response yet again. Voters had started queuing up at the centres since 7.30 am with the turnout surging as the day moved on — 10.7% at 11 am, 34.1% at 2:30 pm, 42% at 4 pm and 52% at 6 pm. Voters, especially senior citizens, started reaching the polling centres early to exercise their franchise. Former Chief of Army Staff Gen VP Malik, a resident of Sector 6, along with his wife, was among the first ones to cast vote. Both Bansal and Sudha Bhardwaj were locked in a head-to-head battle for the post of Mayor. Manoj Aggarwal (INLD), Rajesh Kumar (AAP) and two Independents Chandan Singh and Karnail Singh are also in the fray. Separate EVMs were installed at the polling stations, one each for mayoral candidates and ward councillor nominees. Meanwhile, 54.7% overall voter turnout was recorded in urban local body elections held for the Municipal Corporations of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonepat; the Municipal Councils of Rewari and the Municipal Committees of Dharuhera, Sampla, and Uklana. High turnout in rural areas Booth No. 199, Government Girls Primary School, Toka, of Ward No. 20 witnessed 90% polling, Government Primary School, Alipur, Ward No. 20, 85.56%; and Government Senior Secondary School, Billa, of Ward No. 20 logged 88.91% turnout. Kundi, Ramgarh, Darra Khurani, Chaunki, Sukhdarshanpur, Chandi Kotla, Budhanpur, Khatoli, Khangesra, Sector 16 and Sector 17 also logged high turnout. Controversy erupted in Ward No. 6, Vijay Public School, Sector 17, where the Congress candidate alleged that BJP candidate Parth Gupta’s polling agent Gian Chand Gupta allegedly entered the polling booth with his gunman in the afternoon. He alleged that the Returning Officer did not check Gian Chand Gupta, grandfather of Parth and former Speaker of Haryana Assembly, or take any action against him. Two criminals arrested Western disturbance hits Tricity region, with pistols, cartridges IMD issues orange alert for today Tribune News Service Mohali, May 10 The State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Mohali, has arrested two accused with sophisticated pistols and cartridges in the Banur area. One of the accused was an international kabaddi player and had represented Italy in various tournaments. The police said they received information that Parveen Kumar, alias Shama, a resident of Kanewal village, Hoshiarpur, presently residing in Goel Colony, Banur, was involved in the illegal trade of weapons and ammunition. He, along with his associates, was planning to execute a criminal activity in the Mohali-Chandigarh area. On the basis of this information, an FIR under Sections 25(1)(B) of the Arms Act and 61(2) of the BNS was registered. During the course of One of the accused was an international kabaddi player investigation, a police team raided the Banur area and arrested Parveen. Acting upon the disclosures made by him during interrogation, the police recovered one .32-bore pistol, one magazine and five cartridges from his rented accommodation. The SSOC AIG, Deepak Pareek, said Parveen had a criminal background and was involved in multiple criminal cases. He was declared a proclaimed offender in a case reg- istered at Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur district. During interrogation, Parveen disclosed that his associate, Harish Kumar, alias Harry Bhupal, a resident of Thana village in Garhshankar, was also involved with him in criminal activities. A team conducted raids in Hoshiarpur and arrested him on May 9. The police recovered two pistols from his possession. Harish told the police that a consignment of weapons had been sent to him by Rajesh Kumar, alias Banta, a resident of Thana village, Garhshankar, at present residing in Italy. Harish was an international kabaddi player and had represented Italy in various international tournaments. Rajesh faces nine criminal cases registered against him for various offences. Both accused were produced before the court today and sent to three- day police remand. c m y b Chandigarh, May 10 A fresh Western Disturbance swept into the region on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a warning of thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph in the Tricity from Sunday to Thursday. The active spell peaks on Monday with an orange alert in force across Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana before tapering off gradually towards the end of the week. The weather will clear up Friday onward. However, there was no visible impact of Western Disturbance in the Tricity region on Sunday till the filing of this report. An upper air cyclonic circulation that had been sitting over East Rajasthan has now shifted to Southeast Rajasthan and its neighbourhood. Together, these two systems are drawing moisture and energy into the region, activating pre-monsoon thunder activity across the plains. Residents are advised to stay indoors, keep livestock in safe locations and avoid taking shelter under trees or near water bodies. Farmers have been specifically told to suspend all field operations. From Tuesday through Thursday, the intensity steps down to a yellow alert — thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph at isolated places. Monday brings partly cloudy sky with thunderstorm, lightning, gusty winds and rain, with a maximum of 36°C and minimum of 24°C. Tuesday carries the same forecast with temperatures holding at 36°C maximum and 23°C minimum. Wednesday continues with partly cloudy sky, thunderstorm and rain, the maximum dipping slightly to 35°C and minimum to 22°C. Thursday to witness partly cloudy sky without the storm threat, the maximum recovering to 37°C. Friday turns mainly clear, with the maximum climbing to 39°C. In Chandigarh, the maximum temperature on Sunday stood at 35.0°C — three degrees below normal — and the minimum at 23.4°C, one degree below normal. Maximum relative humidity was 68 per cent and minimum 38 per cent.
