Divanshi of Teja Singh Sutantar Memorial Senior Secondary School, Shimlapuri, secured the second position in the district with 500 marks (100 per cent) in humanities while Simran Tiwari of the same school bagged the third position with 497 marks out of 500 (99.4). Coming from a middle-class family, she said she achieved the feat without taking private coaching. “I remained regular in studies and focused properly during classes. Revision played the biggest role in my preparation,” she said. Suhani, whose father works as an HR manager in a private firm, aspires to become a judge and plans to pursue higher studies at Guru Nanak Dev University. A pack of dogs were seen mauling the body on Wednesday morning. The incident caused panic among residents of the area and widespread anger against the administration for failing to control the stray canine menace. Though the deceased’s family alleged that stray dogs had mauled the victim to death, doctors said only viscera report could confirm the exact cause of death. SMO, Khanna Civil Hospital, Maninder Bhasin, said the deceased had multiple injuries on the body and also some dog bites and scratches. “There is less likely that the victim died due to dog bites and the same angle can also not be ruled out. Hence, to establish the cause of death, viscera samples have been sent to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, and forensic lab in Mohali,” Bhasin said. The deceased was identified as Ram Ishwar Das (35), a native of Bihar, at SMO says body bore head injuries, dog bite marks; viscera report to clear exact cause of death present staying at Rasulra village in Khanna. The deceased’s father, Mahesh Dass, told the police that his son went to work on Tuesday and did not return home till night. On Wednesday morning, he saw his son lying in the fields and dogs were feeding on the body. When he raised the alarm, villagers rushed to the spot and drove the animals away. By then, Ishwar had already died. The residents alleged that since the garbage dump was built near the village, the canine population has increased. They frequently bite people, making it difficult for them to work in the fields. They blame the Khanna Municipal Council for the situation. The residents demanded that the administration should deploy special teams to catch stray dogs and a sterilisation campaign should be launched. The illegal garbage dump be removed and the deceased’s family be given adequate compensation. Last year, four children of six to 11 years of age were mauled to death by stray dogs in Ludhiana district.
