Phagwara: Strong reactions have emerged from various Hindu organisations in Punjab following reports of the threatening email, allegedly targeting prominent religious shrines. Leaders of the Shiv Sena Punjab and Shiv Sena (UBT) Punjab have condemned the threat and described it as an attempt to disturb communal harmony and create fear among devotees. Shiv Sena Punjab senior vice-presidents Inderjit Karwal and Rajesh Palta, along with state spokesperson Vipin Sharma, condemned the threat and questioned the rationale behind targeting Hindu temples in the name of historical events linked to Operation Bluestar. They stated that Punjab has long been a symbol of the HinduSikh unity and brotherhood and alleged that certain antinational elements were attempting to create divisions between communities. The leaders asserted that both Hindu and Sikh communities share a deep cultural and historical bond and warned against efforts aimed at disturbing the state’s social fabric. They main- tained that religious places of worship must remain beyond the scope of political or ideological conflicts and called for collective vigilance against attempts to spread hatred and discord. Expressing concern over the security implications of the threat, the Shiv Sena leaders urged the Centre and investigating agencies to identify those responsible for sending the email and take stringent action against them. Jalandhar, June 4 Senior Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh, reacting to the Majitha incident, said the police were being misused. He stated that regardless of which government is in power, he has always opposed the politics of filing politically motivated cases. “Strict action should be taken against the officers who act at the behest of those in power. Such officers should be dismissed immediately so that a clear message is sent to others that abuse of power will not be tolerated under any circumstances”, he said. Condemning the blasphemy case registered against a young man in Hoshiarpur over disrespecting the ‘broom’ symbol, Pargat said the police are being openly misused, which is concerning and poses a serious threat to democracy. He said the police should not be a tool for advancing any political party’s agenda. Officers must understand their responsibilities and refrain from misusing the law under political pressure, he said. Pargat stated that filing a false case against an innocent person is not only legally wrong but is also a grave social injustice. “It destroys families, damages reputations and Mass fish deaths in Nakodar pond trigger alarm, probe sought Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service TWO HELD FOR DRUG ADDICTION ‘Broom’ row: Cong questions Mann’s silence on real sacrilege cases Jalandhar, June 4 Scores of dead fish have surfaced in a pond in Nakodar, triggering alarm among residents and prompting concern over the environmental condition of the water body. The incident has caused panic in the area, particularly as it is the first time that such a large-scale loss of aquatic life has been reported at the site. Ironically, it comes just days ahead of World Environment Day, observed on June 5. The pond, located behind the historic Shivaalay Temple in Nakodar, is a revered site where devotees gather daily to feed fish, a ritual observed by locals for years. However, on Wednesday morning, devotees were shocked to find thousands of fish carcasses floating on the surface. Locals said fish deaths had been occurring for several days, though earlier the number was negligible or significantly lower. However, panic escalated on Wednesday when not only small fish, but also several large ones were found dead. The pond stands on the site of an approximately 90-kanal village pond, believed to be over 50–60 years old. Residents said it was once a large water body, but has gradually shrunk due to encroachments by individuals and organisations. Dumping of waste along its banks and the expansion of nearby colonies have further reduced its area. A significant portion of the pond falls under the Nagar Dead fishes float on the surface of a pond at Nakodar. Council, while parts are also owned by a temple and a local dera. Owing to its proximity to Dera Baba Murad Shah and the Shivaalay Temple, the pond continues to attract a steady flow of devotees. The devotees, who had arrived to feed the fish, were met with the grim sight and alerted the Nagar Council. Officials later visited the site to assess the damage. Rising temperatures and direct sunlight led to a strong stench emanating from the pond, making it difficult for temple staff, devotees and nearby residents to remain in the area. Locals added that some of the dead fish were large, weighing several kilograms. Work to remove the carcasses is currently underway. A team from the Fisheries Department also visited the site on Thursday. Nakodar-based activist Gaurav Jain said, “The pond is over 60 years old, but this is the first time fish deaths have been reported on such a scale. This points to gross negligence. It was originally spread over 90 kanals, much of which has been encroached upon over the years. Launching a sharp attack on AAP he said registering a , blasphemy case and sending a young man to jail merely because a broom was scattered in Hoshiarpur is completely wrong, absurd, and a reflection of the arrogance of power. Pargat Singh further said, on the other hand, no major action has been taken so far in cases involving the sacrilege incidents of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab. The government has remained silent on those matters, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has chosen not to speak. He said justice remains incomplete in cases that shook the conscience of the entire state, while people are being jailed in the name of political symbols.
