Power corporation outsourced worker electrocuted to death Was repairing a damaged power line; incident leads to protest in the area Rishika Kriti ‘FAMILY TO GET ~25 LAKH COMPENSATION’ Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 13 A 31-year-old outsourced worker, engaged by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), died after allegedly coming in contact with a live 11-kv electricity line while carrying out repair work at Turna village on Friday afternoon. The victim, Onkar Singh, was reportedly the only son of his parents. He was employed as a complaint handling bike (CHB) worker and had been working with the Power Department for the past nine years. He was posted at the Lohian Khas subdivision under the PSPCL City Nakodar division. Singh was due to be promoted as contract worker on Saturday. According to officials, a severe storm that swept through the area on Thursday night had damaged power infrastructure, leaving an ❝As per rules, an FIR cannot be registered against PSPCL officials in cases involving infrastructure failures or technical mishaps without proper investigation. We have assured the family that a compensation of ~25 lakh, as per applicable provisions, will be provided to them. — Inderjit Singh, XEN, CITY NAKODAR DIVISION ❞ ONKAR SINGH, THE VICTIM electricity pole connected to an agricultural feeder broken and lying on the main road in Turna village. Following complaints from residents on Friday morning, Singh was reportedly assigned to attend to the fault. At around 1 pm, Singh reached the site, along with two fellow workers, to remove the damaged pole and clear the area. After reaching the site, he noticed several snapped electricity wires. As he attempted to move the wires aside, he allegedly came in contact with a live 11-kv electricity wire, leading to his death. Gurcharan Singh, a fellow CHB worker who was present at the site, said,” We administered CPR as firstaid in an attempt to stabilise him and then rushed him to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead,” he said. Gurcharan further said that the consumers who had reported the damaged pole had also informed the PSPCL staff that power supply was still active in the snapped wires and requested them that the line be switched off before repair work commenced. “Despite this, the supply was allegedly not disconnected. We are also not provided with adequate safety kits that could possibly have prevented his death,” he claimed. The incident sparked protests from the victim’s family who reportedly refused to cremate his body and staged a demonstration outside the PSPCL subdivision office on Friday, demanding FIRs against the PSPCL staff concerned. The protest continued until the police and PSPCL officials assured the family that the matter would be investigated and appropriate action taken. Shriram, PSPCL Sub Divisional Officer, said, “A departmental inquiry has been initiated and the report is expected to be submitted within a week. At this stage, it is not clear whether the power supply from the grid had been disconnected or not. During adverse weather conditions, incidents of electricity leakage and wire crossing are very common due to the tilting of poles.” “In such situations, the CHB workers are instructed to use safety gear, particularly insulated gloves, which are designed to provide protection while handling high-voltage lines. We are also investigating whether the victim was carrying and using the prescribed safety equipment. If any PSPCL employee is found negligent, appropriate departmental action will be taken against him.” Summer break hit as ‘Wrong’ Punjabi spellings at meet raise eyebrows teachers pushed to conduct drug survey Tribune News Service Rishika Kriti Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 12 Nearly 1,000 government school teachers across nine constituencies in Jalandhar have been assigned duties for the Drug and Socio Economic survey, even as the exercise was originally advertised as one requiring voluntary participation. These last-minute duties have caught teachers completely off guard, disrupting their planned summer break. The development has triggered widespread resentment among teachers, with many alleging these duties were imposed without their consent right after they finished their population census work. Additionally, educators, who are from other districts, had already returned to their hometowns for the summer break. They are now receiving sudden orders to report back or risk having their salaries freezed. Kulwinder Singh, district president of the Democratic Teachers Front, said, “Even teachers who are currently out of station are not being exempted from these duties. And even teachers, who are yet to complete their census duty, are being told to conduct this drug survey at the same time.” 141 teachers warned of FIRs and salary withhold The district administration Show-cause notices to 141 educators, FIR and salary freeze threatened under Census Act has already issued showcause notices to 141 teachers for failing to report to work. In official letters, the authorities noted that despite receiving training and collecting survey kits, these teachers had not started their field duty. The administration has warned them to report immediately or face strict legal consequences under Sections 6, 7 and 11 of the Census Act, 1948, threatening that either the salary of non-compliant teachers will be withhold or FIRs will be lodged against them. An educator from School of Eminence, Ladowali Road, said, “The Census Act, 1948, is a Central legislation enacted specifically for the population census conducted by the Central Government. A statelevel Drug and Socio Economic Survey is not a Census in the legal sense. How can a state government invoke a Central law for non-compliance with a state survey. They are asking to register FIRs like we are some criminals,” the teacher said. continued on page 2 Jalandhar, June 13 Signages and hoardings with word “vyopar” milni, put up all around the venue of the meeting of the Punjab State Traders Commission, organised by the state government at the Apeejay College of Fine Arts, raised many eyeballs on Saturday.
