Angry residents surround AAP leader over ration kit distribution Ravi Dhaliwal Tribune News Service Dinanagar, June 14 Shamsher Singh, AAP halqa in-charge, Dinanagar Assembly segment, found himself in a precarious position after being surrounded by a crowd of irate people who were protesting his “objectionable and unsociable” behaviour in Ward No. 6 from where a repoll has been ordered tomorrow. A police team, led by two SHOs, reached the spot and managed to rescue the AAP leader. Eye-witnesses claimed the mob was so incensed that even the police team found it difficult to whisk away Shamsher Singh. Police sources say the leader reached Ward No.6 with scores of ration kits meant to be distributed to the voters. The ward is seeing repolling after an EVM developed a technical fault in yesterday’s polling. People got angry with Shamsher after he gave a speech in which he said the ration kits were being distributed by the AAP “He was try. ing to induce us to vote for AAP by distributing these ration kits while the fact is that the kits belonged to the state government and not to any political party. However, as she was not present at the house, he left for another destination. After some time, his brother-in-law, Sajan Singh, called him on his mobile phone. When Lovepreet returned to his in-laws’ house, Sajan allegedly poured petrol on him and set him on fire. In an attempt to save himself, Lovepreet jumped into a nearby drain and managed to escape. The occupants have urged the Registrar General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the District and Sessions Judge, the Deputy Commissioner and the Police Commissioner to grant them time until August to vacate the quarters. Some families have been residing in these houses for nearly two decades, while most occupants are serving or retired police personnel. In a representation submitted to the authorities, the residents stated that the Registrar General, through an order dated May 15, 2026, directed the vacation of 78 police quarters for the proposed expansion of judicial infrastructure. The residents claimed that many of the alternative accommodations suggested by the authorities are either already occupied or unfit for habitation. They further alleged that several quarters identified for relocation remain occupied by police officials, leaving limited options for displaced families. Despite repeated representations, no satisfactory arrange- ments have been made for their rehabilitation, they said. The residents requested that alternative accommodation be allotted at least 15 days before any eviction process begins to prevent hardship for families, particularly children and elderly members. Amritsar, June 14 Panic gripped the area around the Majitha road police station on Saturday night after a loud explosionlike sound triggered rumours of a grenade attack there. The incident occurred around 11.45 pm, causing alarm among residents, attendants of patients at the nearby Guru Nanak Dev Hospital and passers-by. As the news of blast spread, speculation mounted that alleged terrorists had targeted the police station with a grenade. Several persons informed their relatives and acquaintances, leading to widespread concern in the area while mediapersons also reached there. At the time of the incident, SHO Rakesh Kumar was conducting vehicle checking at a naka a short distance away from the police station. Hearing the loud sound, he rushed to the spot along with police personnel and initiated an investigation. After a thorough inspection, the police found that the explosion-like sound had been caused by the bursting of the front tyre and tube of an old PCR motorcycle parked in the police station. Rakesh Kumar said no explosive device was used and that the incident was purely accidental.
