Only after rigorous checking, the candidates were allowed into the centre. Since the examination to secure seats in the government-run medical institutions was held after reports of leaks in the examination held previously, extraordinary security was in place. In a significant change, this time deputy commissioners were appointed as nodal officers for the exam. A team of officials, led by IAS officer Abhinav Trikha, visited several centres to ensure smooth conduct of the re-examination and compliance of new instructions. Dalwinderjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner, said security of each centre was under a DSP-rank officer and question papers and answer sheets were transported from postal department to the centres under police protection and CRPF personnel as per protocol. Each vehicle was escorted by cops and paramilitary personnel. This time, the physics section was much longer, resulting in students spending more time on attempting questions of the subject. Meanwhile, the Railways operated four special trains in Punjab to help students reach their exam centres, while the state government provided free bus service to aspirants. The district administration had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful, fair and smooth conduct of the NEET (UG)2026 examination being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Dalwinderjit had already imposed special restrictions around all 11 examination centres in the district under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023. According to the orders, gatherings of five or more persons within 100 m of examina- tion centres was prohibited from 2 pm to 5:30 pm today. The use of loudspeakers, sound amplifying devices and other noise-generating devices had also been banned. This ban was applicable around the 11 centres set up at Army Public School, Amritsar Cantt, Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Cantonment, School of Eminence, Cheharta, Sagar Memorial School of Eminence, Town Hall at Maal Mandi, Residential Schools for Meritorious Students, Government Girls Senior Sec- ondary School, MS Road, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Mahan Singh Gate, School of Eminence for Girls, Mall Road, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Nawan Kot, Kendriya Vidyalaya No.3, Khasa, and Government Senior Secondary School. The police was asked to ensure strict compliance with these orders as all necessary arrangements to ensure transparency and security of the examination had been made. Breach in distributary; farm leaders claim 400 acres flooded Gurbaxpuri Tarn Taran, June 21 A breach in a distributary originating from the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) has flooded 400 acres at Chutala and Jodhpur villages in the area, submerging crops. In this regard, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, leader Sawinder Singh Chutala said that the breach in the distributary occurred around 3 am and as it widened, crops in nearby fields, a poultry and a farm house also got submerged. Farmer leaders Sawinder Singh Chutala and Tajinderpal Singh Rasoolpur said that this distributary had not been cleaned before the start of the season, which affected the flow of the water. The farmers who came to the spot to inspect the spot asked several questions to Junior Engineer (JE) Kajalpreet Kaur in this regard. Farmers whose hundreds of acres of crops had been destroyed were a dejected lot. Planted paddy, along with seedlings (paneeri), have been affected. The Irrigation Department’s XEN Dilpreet Singh said that the water removal operations were continuing. Meanwhile, the district administration today faced another major embarrassment when another major breach was reported near the main Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) in the afternoon near Tarn Taran. This water is flowing into the adjacent forest area and it is being said that it will soon start flowing towards some fields. So far, no official has inspected the spot. Farmer leader Chutala said that he had been urging the district administration to strengthen the banks of the canals for a long time, but no one listened to him, and today the canal breached at two places. Addressing the event, Harmandeep Singh Sultanwind, who organised the event, said gatka was an important part of the ‘shastra vidya’ given by Guru Hargobind, which every Sikh should strive to learn. He is posted with the Deputy Commissioner’s security. Ashishpal said that on June 19, he got up at three in the morning and went to pay obeisance at the Darbar Sahib. His mother and sister were in the house when the thieves broke open the cupboard of his house and stole eight-and-a-half tolas of gold ornaments belonging to his sister and Rs 5 lakh kept by him to buy a car. More than 1,000 participants, including BSF personnel, their family members, students, local dignitaries and residents of border villages, took part in a large-scale yoga session held at Attari joint checkpost here today. Similar programmes were also conducted at the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor in Gurdaspur, Hussainiwala joint checkpost in Ferozepur and joint checkpost, Sadqi, on the Fazilka border, said BSF officials. Addressing the participants at Attari, BSF IG, Punjab, Atul Fulzele, encouraged participants to incorporate yoga into their daily routine. He said regular yoga practice helped keep the mind and body agile, resilient and healthy throughout life. Yoga instructors conducted sessions in accordance with the common yoga protocol, guiding participants through various asanas, pranayama and meditation exercises. Special emphasis was placed on breathing techniques, posture alignment, flexibility, joint mobility and stress management, reflecting the spirit of healthy ageing.
