The accused have been identified as Jarnail Singh, Sukhwindar Singh and Lovpreet Singh, all residents of Bahmania village. Bhajan Singh of the same village complained to the Jalandhar (rural) SSP that Jarnail Singh got his first passport made in 2001, went abroad and prepared a new passport with the name of Karanil Singh. Nambardar Sukhwindar Singh and Lovepreet Singh attested his identity. The SSP ordered an inquiry. OC COUPLE HELD FOR CHEATING NRI Phagwara: The Bilga police have arrested three accused, including a couple, for cheating an NRI. The accused have been identified as Paramjit Singh of Pati Neelowal Bilga village and his wife Jasveer Kaur and Santokh Singh of Pati Mansoor Bilga village. Gurmail Singh (78), an NRI and resident of Pati Neelo Wal, Bilga village, had complained to the Jalandhar DC that the accused, who are his nephew and daughter-in-law, fraudulently prepared his general power of attorney and got it register along with his will registration. The accused Jasbir Kaur registered sale deeds of his more than two acres property in the name Paramjit Singh and cheated him. OC MAN BOOKED FOR RASH DRIVING Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have booked an unidentified driver on the charge of causing death by negligence. Raju of Anga Kirri village complained to the police that a man was driving his vehicle fast and negligently and hit his brother-in-law Gullu and killed him. OC MANY BOOKED FOR DUPING Phagwara: The police have booked miscreants for duping a Mehatpur villager of Rs 10.14 lakh on the pretext of investment. Om Parkash of Kurlapur village complained to the SSP, Jalandhar (rural police), that an unidentified accused cheated him of Rs 10.40 lakh by promising investment. oc TWO HELD FOR SNATCHING Phagwara: The Nakodar police have arrested two miscreants on the charge of snatching cash. The accused have been identified as Shamir Singh and Shahid of Mudh village. Gurpreet Singh of Saidupur village complained to the police that the accused and their two accomplices waylaid him on the evening of August 11 and snatched his purse containing cash. oc Jalandhar, August 13 After years of neglect, there is finally a ray of hope for the Punjab State War Memorial near the Jalandhar bus stand. The PWD is set to renovate the memorial at an estimated cost of ~3.98 crore. The design has already been approved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the project is awaiting the final budgetary sanction. Deputy Director, Defence Services Welfare, Commander Balwinder Virk (retd), who also holds additional charge of Jalandhar, said the entire structure would be revamped once the project receives the final clearance. Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT) Chairperson Ramneek Singh Randhawa has also extended support for the upkeep of the memorial. “The Sainik Welfare Department is responsible for maintaining the War Memorial. However, if it currently lacks adequate resources and staff, the Trust can assist with basic cleanliness and upkeep in the meantime,” he said. An Aam Aadmi Party leader, Randhawa said, “The memorial is a revered site as it holds the memories of our war heroes. We shall willingly take to its cleanliness work. My Phagwara, August 13 The police have initiated strict action after a video showing a woman beggar being allegedly assaulted outside the historic Mata Shri Bhadrakali Temple in Kapurthala went viral on social media. Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident and following intervention by the Women’s Commission, the police have registered an FIR against the accused. Efforts are underway to arrest the accused. While Paramjit Singh reportedly died on the spot, Dilpreet Singh died late Tuesday night. Maninder Singh is said to be out of danger. The deceased has been identified as Mandeep Singh of Thuana village near Mahilpur. According to the police, Mandeep was posted at Jahan Khelan and was returning home after com- pleting his duty. The accident took place around 12.40 am when his car allegedly hit steps lying on the road before crashing into a tree. The vehicle overturned on the other side of the road. Mandeep sustained serious injuries in the accident and was taken to the Civil Hospital, Mahilpur, in an ambulance. TRIBUNE PHOTO : MALKIAT SINGH Waterlogging triggers civic action at Pathankot Chowk Aided school staff await salaries for 8 months Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 13 Serious concerns over waterlogging, drainage infrastructure and inadequate streetlighting around Pathankot Chowk here have prompted the civic authorities to initiate a series of measures. The move comes amid reports that resident Vijay Mahendru allegedly died two days ago after his vehicle got stuck in a waterlogged stretch near Lamma Pind Chowk and he fell. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be officially established. Raju, son of Vijay Mahendru, said his father was on his way to work when the incident occurred. “A witness told me that my father’s vehicle got stuck in a waterlogged patch, he fell and died,” he said. The issue was raised by the Aided School Employees Association here today. They said thousands of employees and their families are facing financial hardships because their salary has not been released for the past eight months. Teachers said the irony is that the grant was withheld citing ‘audit objections.’ Even the schools where audit issues were resolved three or four months ago, the relevant documents are still gathering dust in various government offices. Employees said even after the documents reach the DPI office, there is no urgency shown in approving the files, as files drift from one table to another at the DPI office or languish on the desks of Finance Department officials. Manish Aggarwal, state press secretary, Aided School Employees Association, said, “Most employees have not received their salaries for eight months, while some have not got these for 20 months. Even if the the grant is released now, employees are likely to receive only two or three months’ salary.” The association urged the Education Minister not to ignore this serious issue. They sought immediate intervention and directions to the DPI (Secondary) office. They also said files for schools, where audit objections have already been cleared, should be processed immediately.
