Following the incident, the Police Division 7 registered a case against the six suspects, Jaspreet Singh of Bhamian Kalan, Jamalpur, Sunil Kumar of Mohalla Fatehgarh, Sukhwinder Singh and three unidentified assailants and nabbed two of them, Jaspreet and Sunil, on Monday. The complainant, Parminder Singh Bajwa, a resident of Sector 32, Samrala road, said he was a property dealer and into agricultural business. His wife sent a complaint to the DGP, Punjab, and the CP, Ludhiana, along with the CCTV footage showing him present at home at the time of the firing. Hence, an inquiry into the case was marked to the CIA, Ludhiana, by the CP. Meanwhile, the police produced the suspects in a local court on Tuesday, which sent them to judicial custody. Ludhiana, September 15 The timely action of a police team prevented potential collateral damage while neutralising shooters, Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma told mediapersons. “AGTF and Ludhiana police teams have done an impressive job while neutralising the shooters. Even a minor delay in chasing them (shooters) down would have caused collateral damage as they were on the way to enter the blood donation camp near the police encounter site where hundreds of people were present. When the shooters fired at the police officials from sophisticated automatic weapons, our team retaliated strongly in self-defence and gunned them down,” Sharma told mediapersons. He said two weapons of 9mm calibre were fully automatic and one was semi-automatic. The chambers of the weapons were fully loaded with 30 rounds and timely action foiled the attempt. One person died at the scene while the other succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Civil Hospital. The latter was declared brought dead by doctors at the hospital. Sources said the impact of the collision was so big that both bike riders were thrown away from the road. Passersby called the police and an ambulance. The deceased were identified as Shindarpal Singh (25), a resident of Tihara village who was working as a solar system installer, and Harpreet Singh (28) of Mundari village. As per initial police probe, Shindarpal and Harpreet were returning from work when the accident occurred. When they reached the Sidhwan Bet-Bhundri main road, their bikes collided with each other. Following the autopsy, family of Gurpreet took his body to their place in Jalandhar while the body of Karanjot was yet to be taken to his place by his kin. FILE Ludhiana, September 15 A woman was found hanging from a ceiling fan under suspicious circumstances at a PG in Aman Park, falling under the jurisdiction of the Sarabha Nagar police station, early on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Lakhvinder Kaur, who had been running a spa in BRS Nagar for the past five years, and the mother of two children. While the circumstances pointed to suicide, her family has refused to accept the same and levelled serious allegations of harassment and murder against her business partners. According to the victim’s brother, Gurpreet Singh, he received a phone call around 5 am informing him that his sister had hanged herself in her room. The family rushed to the PG. When they reached the place, neighbouring tenants had already taken the woman to the nearby Raghunath Hospital. Doctors declared her brought dead. In his complaint to the police, Gurpreet stated that Lakhvinder Kaur ran a spa in partnership with two persons. He alleged that both partners had been subjecting her to prolonged mental and physical harassment. On the night of the incident, one of the partners had allegedly assaulted her and the second partner was also present during the incident. Iron grills turn traffic islands into death traps for pedestrians RESIDENTS SEEK CITYWIDE SURVEY Sukhpreet Singh Tribune News Service Ludhiana, September 15 Traffic islands meant to provide pedestrians a safe place to wait while crossing busy roads have themselves become a safety concern in the city, with iron grills and advertising structures blocking space at several junctions. One such traffic island, barely 50 m from the Municipal Corporation Commissioner’s office at Zone D, has been covered with iron grills and advertising material by a private company. Instead of offering pedestrians a safe waiting area, the blocked traffic island is forcing them to remain close to moving traffic. The problem is also visible at busy junctions such as Dugri Chowk, where students and other commuters often have to wait along the carriageway before crossing the road. Residents said the situation becomes particularly risky during peak hours and after sunset when vehicles move at a high speed. Distressed by the assault, the woman allegedly used her chunni to hang herself from the fan. Investigating officer Gurvinder Singh said: “The body was sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Impartial action is being taken on the basis of statements of members of the victim’s family and the autopsy report.” The police were also scrutinising the CCTV footage from cameras installed in the vicinity of the PG and questioning local residents. At night, the situation becomes more c m y b dangerous as vehicles move fast and do not always slow down,” she said. Traffic islands are designed to divide a pedestrian crossing into stages and allow people to wait away from moving vehicles. Road-safety experts said blocking these spaces defeats their basic purpose and leaves pedestrians exposed. Kamaljeet Soi, a member of the National Road Safety Council, said traffic islands were an important part of the junction design. “They help regulate traffic movement and provide pedestrians a safe space while crossing. Covering them with grills and advertisements defeats the purpose for which they were created. It was sheer violation and the authorities were fully responsible for the failure as pedestrians have the right to use their spaces which have been blocked by private firms,” he said. The problem is not new. In 2015, following directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the MC had removed grills obstructing zebra crossings and pedestrian islands. The recurrence of such obstructions has raised concerns over enforcement. Residents said such planning should also address basic issues at existing junctions. They demanded a city-wide survey of traffic islands and removal of grills and advertising structures that obstruct pedestrian movement. MC Commissioner Ojasvi Alankar said the matter would be examined. “I have already conducted a meeting with the traffic adviser in this regard and necessary action will be taken for rectification,” he said. Sahnewal, September 15 The Sahnewal police have booked seven persons for allegedly duping a resident of Sherpur Kalan in Focal Point here of Rs 1 crore on the pretext of selling a land. Mandeep Singh of Sherpur Kalan had lodged a complaint on August 13 that Mohan Singh, Sikandar Singh, Jagdeep Singh, Randhir Singh, Jagtaar Singh, Pargat Singh and Sarabjit Singh, all residents of Umaidpur village, entered into a criminal conspiracy to dupe him. As per the complainant, the alleged suspects struck an agreement to sell a land in Umaidpur and fraudulently took Rs 1 crore as earnest money from him. The Sahnewal police have registered a case postinquiry against the suspects. “Further probe is underway,” said investigating officer Navdeep Singh.
