SHO City Amandeep Nahar said the suspect was identified as Naresh Kumar, a resident of Balmiki Chowk, Phagwara. He was nabbed at a checkpoint near Patel Nagar. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspect. OC THIEVES STRIKE AT BATTERY STORE Phagwara: As many as 59 batteries were stolen from a store room on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur Road, Phagwara, on Wednesday night. Store owner Jarnail Singh, a resident of Friends Colony, told the police that he found the locks broken and the store burgled on Thursday morning. The police have registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC. They have initiated investigations into the matter. OC BID TO SNATCH MOBILE, BOY HURT Phagwara: A minor boy, identified as Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Bid-Puad village, was attacked by two armed motorcyclist-borne robbers. The suspects were trying to snatch the mobile phone from the boy near Radha Swami Dera here on Thursday. The boy, who suffered serious injuries, was going to take tuition on his Activa scooter. The suspects stopped him and tried to snatch his mobile phone. When he resisted, the suspects attacked him with a sharp weapon. They managed to flee from the spot. The victim was admitted to the Civil Hospital. The police have registered a case. OC TWO KILLED IN MISHAPS Phagwara: An ambulance driver, identified as Purshotam Lal, died in a road mishap near Phillaur on Wednesday night. The accident took place after a speeding vehicle hit the ambulance. The driver of the speeding vehicle managed to flee from the spot. The police have registered a case in this regard. In another incident, an unidentified middle-aged person was run over by a train near the Phagwara railway station on Wednesday night. The incident took place when the person was crossing the railway line. The Government Railway Police (GRP) have registered a case and sent the body to the Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. Two miscreants fired gunshots into the air following a minor altercation over bike collision. The suspects later snatched a bike from two school students at the gunpoint and fled from the spot. The suspects were arrested from near Wariana bridge on the Kapurthala road here today. Those arrested have been identified as Vikas Kumar, alias Billa (24), Jotnath, alias Kaka (28), Ajay Kumar, alias Ajju (26), and Bobby (24). The police have recovered two pistols, four bullets, one revolver, five bullets, a country-made illegal pistol, a cartridge and two motorcycles from their possession. While Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann flagged off the Beghumpra Express filled with devotees to Benares at the city railway station earlier today, preparations are now afoot for the huge shobha yatra on February 4 and the celebrations which will be held to mark the jayanti. The district administration has ordered the closure of all meat and liquor shops on February 4-5 on the yatra route and near religious places. Traffic is also being diverted to avoid chaos and jams on the day. The decked up Nakodar Chowk and Buta Mandi have been lit up and the area around Sri Guru Ravi- das Dham and Buta Mandi has an atmosphere akin to a fair. Stalls and vends have begun lining up both sides of the road. Notably, while over 10 lakh members of the Ravidassia community stay in the Dalit-rich Doaba region, thousands of devotees are expected to come to Punjab and Benares on the occasion from both India and abroad. The CM also said today that he might be present in Jalandhar on February 4.” On February 4, the shobha yatra from various villages as well as Dera Sachkhand Ballan — a seat of Ravidasias in Doaba — will come in a large procession from the rural areas and congregate at Guru Ravidas Dham at Buta Mandi in the morning, from where they will head to Dr BR Ambedkar Chowk (also called Nakodar Chowk) by afternoon. The processsion will then head from Ambedkar Chowk to Nehru Garden, Luv Kush Chowk, Bhagat Singh Chowk, Mai Heeran Chowk, Patel Chowk, then back to Ambedkar Chowk from where the procession will head back to Sri Guru Ravidas Dham. Talwara (Hoshiarpur), Feb 2 A truck overloaded with stone crusher material entered the kitchen of a house after ramming into its wall at Khunda village on the Hajipur to Mansar road yesterday. A woman died in the mishap, while three other family members suffered injuries. Vijay Kumar, son of Prakash Chand, a resident of Khunda village, told the police that his house was situated on the roadside at the Khunda canal road. His mother Swaran Kaur (70+), brother Varinder Kumar (42), Raj Kumari (32), wife of Varinder, and sister Paramjit Kaur, wife of Rajeev Kumar, a resident of Rakdi village, falling under the Talwara police station, were having food in the kitchen around 8 pm on February 1. Despite several notices, the shops were being con- structed illegally. Since no machine could enter the narrow corners of the market, the demolition process was carried out manually.
