Manjeet Kaur, wife of Maluk Chand, a resident of Kakkon, lodged a complaint with the police that Dilbag Rai Bagga and his son Rahul Bagga of Saraswati Vihar, Jalandhar, had got her husband to testify while taking loan from a bank. She said when the suspects did not return loan, the bank ordered attachment of her house. After registering a complaint, the police have initiated action against the suspects under Section 420 of the IPC. OC 1 KILLED, ANOTHER HURT IN ACCIDENT Hoshiarpur: A youth was killed while his friend was injured in a road accident. Surinderpal, a resident of Usman Shahid, told the Dasuya police that a vehicle hit his son Akashdeep and his friend Lakhwinder Singh, alias Lucky, a resident of Chak Allah Bakhsh, near their village. He said his son died in the accident while his friend was injured. After registering a case, the police have initiated a probe into the matter. OC 2 ARRESTED WITH INTOXICANT POWDER Hoshiarpur: The district police have arrested two smugglers from different places in the district and recovered intoxicant powder from them. The Mehtiana police arrested Sandeep Singh, a resident of Mana village and recovered 110 grams of intoxicant powder from him at a naka. The Garhshankar police arrested Rohit, a resident of Ghati Mohalla, Garhshankar, and recovered 82 grams of intoxicant powder from him. Separate cases under the NDPS Act have been registered against the two suspects. OC 2 gangsters held after encounter, involvedextortion, drugs and arms trade cases too in Balachaur murders Both wanted in Jalandhar, January 25 Two dreaded criminals associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang, who were shot at and injured in an encounter and arrested by the Jalandhar police recently, are allegedly involved in the murder of two persons at Garhi Kanugo village of Balachaur. Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma said based on intelligence inputs, two gangsters of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang were arrested by the police on Sunday after an encounter. The CP said an FIR No. 50 was Contractor caught running new court complex canteen without food safety licence Civic body razes illegal structures Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, January 25 During a surprise checking, a food team led by District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Lakhvir Singh found that food safety laws were being flouted in a canteen at the new court complex. The contractor running the canteen did not have a food safety licence. None of the workers in canteen were wearing caps, gloves or masks. During investigation, it was found that sauces used in kitchen and given to customers in canteen had expired six months ago. The DHO said food items were lying uncovered, dustbins had no lids and many more violations of the Food Safety Act were found in canteen. There was a lot of dirt and garbage in the utensil washing area. The canteen was functioning without a food safety licence since April last year. The DHO said, “Officers, judges, lawyers and people coming for their cases drink and eat in the canteen every day. Despite this, the canteen owner grossly violated the food safety laws,” The DHO said, while adding that the contractor had been given 15 days’ notice to get his licence and make improvements in canteen. If he failed to comply with instructions, canteen would be sealed, the DHO added. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 25 The building branch of the municipal corporation (MC) today demolished several illegal structures and also sealed shops. An illegal two floor building located on the Sudama Vihar road was sealed today. The MC team demolished illegal labour quarters and three residential structures. The MC team resealed a shop today. The seal of the shop was broken by its owner yesterday. Four shops were resealed near Sai Mandir at Khurla Kingra. A shop near the PNB at Bhai Banno Ji Nagar was also sealed. The MC took action against a shop at Manbro Chowk where illegal construction was going on. THIEVES TARGET 4 SHOPS, HOUSE Hoshiarpur: On Wednesday night, thieves targeted four shops and a house at Mahimowal village and stole cash and other valuables. When the owners opened their shops in the morning, they came to know about theft. A CCTV footage of the incident also surfaced in which two thieves were seen breaking shutters of the shops with the help of cutters. The traders said they closed their shops last night and went home. When traders came on Thursday morning, they found shutters of their shops broken. Thieves also stole cash and other items from a house. The owner said his daughter’s wedding stuff was kept in the house. The loss was yet to be estimated, he said. OC 14 BOOKED FOR TRESPASS, RIOTING Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have booked 14 persons on the charge of criminal trespass, intimidation and rioting. Investigating Officer (IO) Jaspal Singh said suspects were identified as Roshan Lal, Harmesh Lal, Surinder Ram and Manna of Ramuwal village and their 10 unidentified accomplices. Hirdepal Singh of the same village told to the police that suspects barged into his fields with an intention of encroachment, used abusive language and threatened to kill him. They all are expected to remain on toes as various organisations, employee unions and farmers are set to hold demonstrations tomorrow. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema will be at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium tomorrow morning. Massive security arrangements have been made around the stadium and at all intersections leading from his stay tonight at the PAP headquarters to the venue tomorrow and back. As Cheema arrived in the city a day before, Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma arranged his meeting with various protesting organisations. Members of the Latifpura Rehabilitation Morcha, who too are to lodge a protest tomorrow over no execution of rehabilitation plan for them for over a year, handed over a memorandum to the minister at the PAP headquarters. Likewise, members of the Cooperative Employees Federation also met the minister today and present- ed him a memorandum. The unions maintained that they would definitely hold a protest tomorrow, but would not create disturbance at the R-Day function. Farmers announced various tractor rallies in Jalandhar. We shared the problem with officials of the MC numerous times, but they just don’t act. This is why we decided to clean the road,” he said. Jaswinder said, “As per an agreement reached between residents and the MC, waste from two wards had to be disposed of at this site. This continued for some time. Now, things are back to square one.
