Narinder Kaur, a resident of Kili village, told the police that the suspect stole household goods from her place on February 3. Investigating officer (IO) Buta Ram said the accused had been identified as Hardeep Kumar Sharma, alias Deepu, a resident of Talwandi Sanghera village. He was wanted in a case of drug peddling registered in 2018 and was declared a PO recently. OC LIQUOR TRADER ARRESTED Phagwara: The police arrested a liquor trader and recovered 24 bottles of liquor from his possession on Tuesday night. OC THIEVES STRIKE AT TEXTILE MILL Phagwara: Thieves barged into a textile mill on the Nurmahal road on Tuesday night and decamped with machinery parts worth ~12 lakh. Tarlok Bhatara, managing director of Needdo Textile Mill Private Limited, told the police that the suspects stole copper parts of machinery, including welding set motors and generators. After the complaint, Nakodar City SHO Dharminder Kaliyan visited the mill. The incident has created a sense of insecurity among residents and put a question mark on police patrolling. She is out of danger and we are monitoring her health as well.” Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 7 Government offices, including Municipal Corporation, PSPCL, Department of Food and Civil Supplies, Social Security, patwarkhana and Suwidha Centre, have been made to do with less staff since Tuesday as a majority of the employees have been deputed to conduct over 30 camps a day under “Aap Di Sarkar, Aap De Dwar”. The situation is expected to remain similar for coming weeks as the camps would continue for almost a month as 30-33 camps have been planned to be held on a daily basis. While 32 camps were held yesterday, a total of 33 camps were held today across six sub-divisions of Jalandhar including those in Phillaur, Shahkot, Nakodar and Adampur. The suspect has been identified as Balkaran Singh, alias Rai, a resident of Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur. The police also recovered 10 country-made pistols from his possession. SSP Akhil Chaudhary said during preliminary investigation, it came to fore that Arun Kumar, alias Mani, from Una, Himachal Pradesh, who is lodged in the Central Jail, Ludhiana, and involved in several cases, was operating this gang. “The gang was also involved in supplying illegal weapons in different parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Arun was also involved in crime in parts of Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, SAS Nagar, Jalandhar, Roopnagar, Una and areas of Haryana,” the SSP said. “Balkaran, who was involved in drug trafficking cases, came in contact with Arun in the jail. Kumar then directed him to bring the consignment of illegal weapons from Madhya Pradesh and supply it in different parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. For this, Arun gave money to Balkaran through PayTm and the remaining amount was to be given after the delivery. These recovered weapons were to be used for various criminal activities,” police officials said. After getting information, they acted swiftly and seized the consignment of illegal weapons. Jalandhar, February 7 The death of a 32-year-old woman due to the attack by a ferocious pack of dogs has raised a question mark on whether the animal birth control programme, hitherto concentrated around cities, is enough to manage the problem of growing population of stray dogs. Queries to key officials in Kapurthala revealed that no dog sterilisation programme was being run for stray dogs in the rural areas of Kapurthala so far. After holding a meeting on the issue today, the Kapurthala administration has scheduled another meeting for 10 am tomorrow to chalk out a plan to manage stray dogs of Passan Kadim village. Bred on carcasses dumped at an animal carcass dumping ground near Passan Kadim village, stray dogs, which mauled 32-year-old Ram Pari, didn’t leave any skin on the woman’s attacked body parts. It is through her hair and clothes that her husband was able to recognise her. The incident left villagers in a state of shock. Village resident Baljinder Singh said: “The migrant woman was attacked by dogs when she went to bring fodder for their cow. Stray dogs attacked a child around a week ago. Another woman, identified as Pinki Devi, was similarly attacked, rendering her limbs incapable. We brought the issue verbally to the administration’s notice but no action has been taken so far. They handed over a memorandum to him demanding the release of their outstanding dues amounting to ~23 crore. The allottees expressed frustration over the persistent failure of the Trust to adhere to directives from the district, state and national consumer commissions regarding the refund of their money. Youth hangs self to death at house, 4 relatives booked Phagwara, February 7 A youth in his early 30s reportedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his house at Baghana village on the night of February 5. In his complaint to the police, Jagjit Singh said his son, Gurjit Singh, took the extreme step due to depression. He was being harassed by his close relatives who were not returning his money worth over ~25 lakh. He said his relatives had borrowed the money for their c m y b business in Ludhiana. On a complaint lodged by Jagjit Singh, the Rawalpindi (Phagwara) police have registered a case under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC against four Ludhiana residents on the charge of duping a person of lakhs of rupees and abetment to suicide. The suspects have been identified as Gurjit’s aunt Santosh Sodhi, her son Jasdeep Singh, his brother Amandeep and his wife Maninder Kaur. No arrest has been made so far. — OC Darshan Ahuja, an allottee from Bibi Bhani Complex, while appealing for the release of dues, said they had been struggling to get justice for over a decade. He high- lighted the poor condition state of these housing schemes, plagued by illegal encroachment by migrants and anti-social elements. “We had a meeting with the JIT chairman in July and in November. The chairman had promised that our dues would be cleared by December 25, but nothing happened. Today, we again came to seek our dues. As usual, the meeting was inconclusive and we were given an assurance that our dues would be cleared before April 24,” he said. Manohar Lal Sehgal, another allottee, said being a senior citizen, he was forced to make frequent visits to the JIT office and courts in pursuit of his hard-earned investment. Over a decade had passed, but neither the previous nor the present government had shown any willingness to deliver justice. “We demand that the JIT must clear our dues shortly and compensate all allottees,” he said. He said on one side, the government is holding camps saying “Sarkar Tuhade Dwar” while on the other senior citizens like him were forced to make visits to the JIT office seeking refund of their own money. “A large number of senior citizens have already lost their lives while struggling to get justice, and many of us are now already 65+. All we hope is that we get justice before anything happens to us”, he said. Threat letter case ‘cracked’ Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 7 The city police today believed to have cracked the case involving a threat letter outside a cloth showroom of a local businessman here recently. It is believed that three or four persons were apprehended in this connection. The police are, however, yet to confirm this development. According to sources, all suspects are from Jalandhar and were allegedly trying to extort money from the businessman. Sources say after thorough Cops yet to disclose identity of suspects interrogation, the police would disclose the identities of the suspects and their motive soon. Meanwhile, the incident, which led to caused panic in the victim’s family and the local business community, took place on January 27 when a threat letter and a live cartridge were found outside the cloth showroom near Basti Adda Chowk. The letter, composed in Hindi and signed with the ini- tials LB and GB, contained ominous warnings of dire consequences if the demands outlined within were not met. While initial suspicions pointed towards extortion and possible gang involvement, the police denied such claims, suggesting that the suspects might have personal connections with the family. Joint CP Sandeep Sharma denied any arrests in the case, stating that investigations were on in the case. He claimed that significant progress had been made and the perpetrators would face consequences.
