Sharing details of his speech in the Lok Sabha, the MP said he thanked Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia for his swift action to ensure early resumption of flights at the airport. He stated that a large number of people in the country, particularly in Punjab, wish to name this airport after Guru Ravidas. He said the Union Government should take necessary action to name Adampur airport after Guru Ravidas. Notably, the MP had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Union Civil Aviation Minister to restore flights from this airport as it would cater to the needs of thousands of passengers of the Doaba region, which is also known as an NRI hub. The MP said the airport terminal was revamped with ultra-modern facilities at an outlay of ~125 crore and all set to host passengers with peak-hour capacity of 300 passengers daily. Rinku mentioned that the airport would also provide wings to aspirations of the business community of this industrial town. Therefore, early resumption of flights from the Adampur airport was need of the hour. The minister was chairing a meeting with officials of various departments here at Kartarpur Improvement Trust to review the pace of ongoing development works of the Assembly segment. Singh reviewed ongoing development works related to Panchayat Department, Local Bodies Department, PSPCL, besides others. He issued directions to PSPCL officials to complete various ongoing works in the circle within the stipulated time and said any kind of delay in these works would be highly unwarranted. He asked the officials that before the onset of the summer season, all maintenance-related works in the entire area should be completed so that no consumer had to face any problem. He also interacted with panchayats of the area present here and said the Punjab Government was releasing equal funds for development works to all panchayats without any discrimination. Meanwhile, he also reviewed the Suwidha camps being organised under the “Aap Di Sarkar, Aap De Dwar” scheme. The Local Bodies Minister told the officials that the objective of this scheme was to provide all citizen services to people near their homes. Hence, there should not be any negligence in this task. He said these camps were getting huge support from people. c m y b Neither have I eaten properly, nor have my kids been taken care of since the death of my wife. None of us have slept for two nights. Had a zamindar’s child died, there would have been a huge outcry. Now what do I do to take care of children? — Kewal Thakur, HUSBAND OF RAM PARI ❞ He said the committee would look into the problem at Passan Kadim, Nabipur, Chuharpur, Chaladha, Doda Wazir and Fattowal villages besides taking possible measures to redress the problem in right earnest. Will leave village, says victim’s husband After the death of his wife Ram Pari, Kewal Thakur on Thursday said he would now leave the village as it would be impossible for him to bring up his three children on his own. Hailing from Darbhanga in Bihar, Kewal had been settled in Punjab for the past 30 to 35 years. He met Ram Pari at the farm of a local landlord and got married here. While labour settle- ments across villages around Passan Kadim spend nights in fear of stray dogs, Kewal said the isolated location of these shanties also exposes them to the elements. Meanwhile, the incident has also sparked a heartening bonhomie between Sikh landlords, farmers as well as migrant labourers working for them in villages. Prominent leaders, sarpanches and farmers from the villages were present during the last rites of Ram Pari. Paramjit Singh Baupur, a resident of Baupur village, said: “Ram Pari and her sister lost their parents early on. They were brought up at a farm of peasants and have had a life of hardships. Since most of these labourers live in shanties near villages, they are especially susceptible to the elements. Today it is them. Next, it could be peasant settlements in villages. We totally support them and believe they need all help to deal with the problem.” Speaking to The Tribune, Kewal Thakur said: “Dogs have been howling outside our huts for the past two nights. We live in fear at night. Neither have I eaten properly, nor have my kids been taken care of since the death of my wife. None of us have slept for two nights. Had a zamindar’s child died, there would have been a huge outcry. Now what do I do to take care of children? I will go back to my village. I have my parents and my family there. Nothing is left for me here.” Amidst speculations by the police whether Ram Pari was murdered or whether there was a different cause to her death, Kewal Thakur, her husband, was also questioned on Wednesday. It was the peasantry and residents of Passan Kadim, Baupur and Chuharpur villages which stood up in favour of Kewal Thakur, vouching that it was indeed the dogs that had caused her death. “AAP DI SARKAR, AAP DE DWAR” Plaints related to poor sewerage pour in Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 8 The city is grappling with poor sewerage. The problem seems perennial because nothing much has been done to resolve the issue till now. While residents were waiting for a solution to the sewerage woes, “Aap Di Sarkar, Aap De Dwar” camps have given a ‘hope’ to them. Affected residents are coming to the camps in a large number and sharing their ordeals. People from Bhullar colony, Dakoha village and other nearby areas shared their plight at one of the camps here today. Residents stated that they had been suffering a lot because of sewage overflow. After listening to their problems, Additional Commissioner Amarjit Singh Bains, along with MLA Raman Arora, visited the Jaitewal Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), where they were informed that the STP was not working to its full capacity. “There is also a possibility that the colony was constructed illegally which is leading to overflowing sewers. Colonisers might have not considered important points while constructing the colony,” an official said. Most of the problems being reported at the camps are related to sewerage. A large number of residents are also coming up with problems such as blocked sewers, poor sanitation, non-functional street lights and damaged roads. Beneficiaries not getting benefits under various schemes are also coming to the camps.
