The court also imposed a fine of ~60,000 on the convict, identified as Yashpal, alias Jaspal, a resident of Bopa Rai Kalan village. A case under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sections of the POSCO Act was registered against him on May 2017. His two other accomplices were sentenced earlier. OC PO LANDS IN POLICE NET Shahkot: The police have arrested a proclaimed offender (PO), who has been absconding for the past 10 months. Investigating officer (IO) Buta Ram said the accused had been identified as Gurnam Singh, alias Gama, a resident of Toti village falling under the Sultanpur Lodhi police station. He was wanted in a case of drug peddling registered in 2019 and was declared a PO in April 2023. OC 1 BOOKED FOR CRIMINAL TRESPASS Nakodar: The Nakodar City police have booked a person on the charge of criminal trespass. Investigating officer (IO) Harinder Pal Singh said the suspect had been identified as Amarjit Singh, a resident of Mohalla Sher Pur, Nakodar. Raj Kumar, a resident of Amar Model Colony, Nakodar, complained to the police that the suspect forcibly demolished some part of his shop in Dakhani Gate and attempted to encroach upon it on the night of February 11. He also blocked entry to the shop by throwing garbage before the shutter. The IO said a case under Sections 447 (criminal trespass) and 511 (attempt to commit an offense punishable with life imprisonment) of the IPC had been registered against the suspect. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said a city-based industrialist, Balkar Singh, had filed a complaint with the police stating that he received a ransom call on February 4. The caller identified himself as dreaded gangster Landa Harike and demanded ~2 crore extortion money from him. Sharma said the caller threatened to harm industrialist and his family in case he failed to fulfil his demand. The CP said the police registered a case under Sections 386 and 506 of the IPC at the Sadar police station against the suspect and his accomplice. The police also recovered 22 ATM cards of various banks from his possession. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the police got a tip-off that a person was cheating people by swapping their ATM cards and withdrawing money from their accounts. The police started investigations into the matter and arrested the suspect from near the Pathankot chowk here. The suspect had been identified as Deepak Kumar from Lamba Pind. The CP said during investigation, it came to fore that Deepak was allegedly involved in multiple frauds. He swapped ATM cards of people and withdrew money from their account. Rachit’s elder brother is also doing engineering in computer science from BITS, Pilani. “I have always had a keen interest in computers. So, I would like to follow in my brother’s footsteps,” he said. Rachit, however, shared that he was expecting a higher percentile. “I am hopeful for JEE Advanced,” the aspiring engineer said. Jalandhar, February 13 MC Commissioner Gautam Jain served a notice to the Superintendent Engineer (Building and Roads) over the poor condition of ‘Smart’ road that was constructed near the Workshop chowk recently. The development comes four days after Principal Secretary of Local Bodies Ajoy Sharma visited the city and sought answers from MC officials for not carrying out works under the Smart City projects. He also expressed disappointment over not doing anything for city residents. Sharma had questioned the officials over the failure to provide basic amenities to people. MC superintendents, XENs and other officials from B&R, O&M and Smart City remained present, but none of them had replied anything. Man held for selling Chinese string Jalandhar, February 13 The police tightened the noose around Chinese kite string sellers ahead of Basant Panchami. They arrested a person for selling Chinese string and recovered 30 rolls of string from him. The SHO of the Rama Mandi police station raided a shop, Duggal Bakery, at Ajit Nagar. He said the shop owner, Shiv Kumar a resident of Ajit Nagar, was selling Chinese string. They recovered 30 rolls of string from the shop. Axing of trees comes under scanner Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 13 The issue of alleged axing of trees in 100 acres of forest area in Garhshankar by a private company for installation of solar plant without the prior permission of the Forest Department has come under scanner. A demand notice has been issued in this regard by advocate HC Arora on behalf of activist Parvinder S Kitna. The copy of the notice reads that the company intends to install the solar plant in the semi-hilly area of Bhawanipur, Achalpur, Bhawanipur Bhagtan, Kannwal and Ratanpur villages. The notice has been sent to the Chief Secretary Punjab, Financial Commissioner Forests, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Deputy Commissioner of Hoshiarpur. Giving reference to a news report, the PIL copy reads, “Officers of the Forest Department are just feigning ignorance and are pretending to take action against the company by sending notice. Phagwara, February 13 On Thursday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) will hear a petition filed by Film and Television serial producer Ekta Kapoor in connection with a case registered against her and others by the Nakodar police in 2013. It is listed before a Bench headed by Justice Harpreet Singh Brar. Ekta Kapoor, her mother Shobha Kapoor and four members of her team involved in the production of the serial ‘ Pavitra Rishta’, as well as the Zee TV owner were booked by the Nakodar police for hurting religious sentiments of the Valmiki community. c m y b The case was lodged after Rauni Gill, president of Bhartiya Valmiki Sarav Dharam Samaj and a resident of Shankar, had complained to the police that the August 5, 2013 episode of the serial had made derogatory and objectionable references towards Maharishi Valmiki which hurt religious sentiments of the community. Apart from Ekta and her mother, Meghna Amal, Sameer Kulkarni, Bhavna Thakkar and the actor who made these references had been named as accused in the case. Talking to the media here today, SSP Gupta said a team of the CIA staff, led by SP (D) Sarabjit Singh Rai, recovered six illegal weapons, a car and a motorcycle from the suspects. Those arrested have been identified as Fateh Singh, alias Fattu, a resident of Dhakhdha village, Arvinder Singh, alias Sonu, a resident of Ibrahimwal village, Yadwinder Singh, alias Yadda, a resident of Khurada Village, Harwinder Singh, alias Dara, a resident of Gaddibaksha, and Amritpal Singh, a resident of Pattar-Kalan village. The SSP said the police recovered four pistols, two rifles, live cartridges, a car bearing registration number PB-57C-4000 and a motorcycle without a registration plate from their possession. SSP Vatsalya Gupta said the police got a tip-off that the suspects used to bring illegal weapons from Madhya Pradesh and sell these in Punjab.
