Shahkot Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Narinder Singh Aujla said the suspect had been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Fateh Pur Bhangwan village. Satnam Singh, a resident of Bhatija Randhawa village falling under the Maqsudan police station, complained to the Jalandhar (rural) SSP that he paid ~23 lakh to the suspect to facilitate his nephew’s migration abroad. The suspect neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. A case under Sections 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC and Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professions Regulation Act was registered against the suspect. OC WOMAN BOOKED FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have booked a woman on the charge of assaulting another woman. Investigating officer (IO) Rannjit Singh said the suspect had been identified as Ranni, a resident of Mohalla Rehman Pura. Rajani, a resident of the same locality, complained to the police that her child was playing outside the house on February 8. She said the suspect started beating up her son after hearing noises. When she tried to save her son, the suspect assaulted her. A case under Sections 323 and 325 of the IPC has been registered against the suspect. Further investigations are on in the case. OC Jalandhar, February 21 In a blatant display of disregard for public space, Company Bagh Park, situated within the Municipal Corporation (MC) office premises here, has transformed into a bustling hub for gamblers. Despite its proximity to the MC Commissioner’s office and a police checkpost, unchecked gambling activities continue at the park, disrupting the tranquillity of visitors and residents living nearby. After having received complaints about the condition of the park and rampant gambling, Jalandhar Tribune team visited the park for two consecutive days. The team discovered that the once serene public park now resembled a full-fledged gambling den. Groups of four or five individuals could be seen scattered across the park, engrossed in card games, with money at stake and refreshments in hand. Residents, dismayed by the situation, shared their concerns. An anonymous source within the MC disclosed that among the gamblers are senior citizens and daily wage workers, including taxi drivers from nearby stands, who converge on the park throughout the day. TRIBUNE PHOTOS: MALKIAT SINGH YOUTH BOOKED FOR RAPE, FRAUD Phagwara: The police have booked a youth on the charges of raping and duping the complainant of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of marrying her. The suspect has been identified as Varinderpal Singh, a resident of Balala village near Samrala. The woman, a resident of MioPatti village, told the police that the suspect neither married her nor returned the money. On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim, the police have registered a case under Sections 376, 420 and 506 of the IPC. Further investigations are on into the matter. OC Our Correspondent Phagwara, February 21 The Rs 24.4-crore project for laying sewerage pipelines in Nurmahal town is yet to be completed and commissioned even after 13 years. The project, started by the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) and allotted to private agencies, is going on at a snail’s pace. As per schedule, the project was to be completed in nine months. The then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had laid the foundation of the project on February 11, 2011. Under the scheme, the main sewerage pipelines and branch lines of 31 km in length were to be laid in the entire town for the drainage of sewage to one place. Nagar Council (NC) president Hardip Kaur Johal said the sewerage project had not been completed. Some areas were still without sewerage while some sewerage lines were yet to be connected to the main line. She said the Executive Officer recently wrote to the GLADA’s executive engineer to complete the project at the earliest and hand it over to the council so that connections could be released to residents. Amrik Singh, leader of the Jalandhar-based union, said farmers had planned to block highways in Jalandhar district at three places - Phillaur near Sutlej bridge, Cholang on Pathankot road and Shahkot-Moga stretch. The aim is to awaken the government and make it realise that it is important to listen to the demands of farmers. Gurbaksh Kaur, Punjab president of the Istri Jagriti Manch, said they recently organised “Jago” in Langroa, Bhan Majara and Usmanpur villages in the district. “We have been getting immense support from people. We are reaching out to everyone by adopting such methods,” she said. During the ‘Jago’, union members and women also give speeches and encourage others to provide strength to the movement. Members associated with the farmers’ unions said the aim of taking out ‘Jago’ was to raise awareness among people, women and children and invite them to show their support to the farmers. Jasveer Singh from the Indian Federation of Trade Union (IFTU) said such events would be held in the coming days too. Union members associated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said several meetings were being held on a daily basis. “No one wants to leave any stone unturned and the motive to join farmers and win over the government,” they said. During the last farmers’ movement, several villages, including Sajawalpur, Pallian Khurd, Sahivaaj Pur, Jethu Majara and Majara Khurd, were covered during “Jago”. The unions have planned to hold a massive protest outside the Deputy Commissioner office in the district tomorrow. Jalandhar, February 21 The Jalandhar police nominated six persons, including gangster Sonu Khatri, in a double murder case in which a mother-daughter duo was shot dead in Jalandhar last year. They have been nominated after revelations by Jassa Happowal, one of the suspects in the case. The police said Happowal was brought for questioning recently. He was planning to commit several crimes, including murder, robbery and extortion. Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, SSP (Rural), Jalandhar, said Karanjit Singh, alias Jassa Happowal, a resident of Happowal, and Lovepreet Kaler, a resident of Gobindpur, at Banga in Nawanshahr, murdered Ranjit Kaur and her daughter Gurpreet Kaur at Aman Enclave, Bhojewal, on October 17 last year. The duo was shot dead and Jassa also set Ranjit’s body on fire. A case was registered under Sections 302, 201 and 120-B of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 29 of the Arms Act at the Patara police station here on October 17, 2023. The Jalandhar police brought Happowal on production warrant from the Kapurthala jail on February 19 and obtained his threeday remand. The Jalandhar SSP said those nominated in the case include Rajesh Kumar, alias Sonu Khatri, a resident of Rakra Dhahan village in Balachaur; Harpreet Singh, alias Mann, alias Babloo, a resident of Banga in Nawanshahr; Harkanwalpreet Singh, alias Yodha, a resident of Mukandpur in Nawanshahr; Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, a resident of Jhingra village; Jaswant Singh alias Bant, a resident of Hakimpur; and Anoj Kumar, alias Anu, a resident of Jagatpur in Mukandpur. The police said Sections 212 and 216 of the IPC had been added to the FIR and raids were being conducted to nab them. The police said during questioning, Happowal revealed that before carrying out the crime, he, along with two associates Harpreet Singh, alias Mann, alias Babloo, and Harkanwalpreet Singh, alias Yodha, did the recce. Babloo arranged the vehicle for the recce. Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, a resident of Jhingra village, arranged a motorcy- cle to commit the crime and Jaswant Singh, alias Bant, and Anoj Kuamr, alias Anu, gave them shelter. On the instructions of Mohnowalia, gangster Rajesh Kumar, alias Sonu Khatri, issued weapons to the two killers and Mohnowalia and Khatri also sent them money from time to time. SSP (Rural) Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar said Karanjit Singh, alias Jassa Happowal, was the main shooter of gangster Sonu Khatri. He was in touch with him through social media apps. Happowal revealed that Sonu Khatri, along with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, had plans to target members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang who had killed Bhagwanpuria gang members at the Goindwal jail. The police said Happowal also had plans to murder Gurinder Pehalwan of Happowal. He had an only enmity with Gurinder and tried to kill him thrice. Besides, he also planned more murders, robbery and extortion bids.
