Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kulwinder Singh said the suspect had been identified as Joginder Singh, a resident of Bhainni Gillan Kamboj village in Amritsar. The DSP said Ajay Kumar, a resident of Mahun Wal village, had complained to the Jalandhar (rural) SSP that he paid ~18 lakh to the suspect to facilitate his migration to Canada. The suspect neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. The DSP said a case under Sections 406 (breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professions Regulation Act was registered against the suspect and three others. OC MAN BOOKED FOR RASH DRIVING Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked a person on the charge of rash driving and mischief. Investigating officer (IO) Vijay Kumar said the suspect had been identified as Amarjit Singh, a resident of Vehran village falling under the Mehat Pur police station. Charan Singh, a resident of Raje Wal village, complained to the police that the suspect was driving a tractor-trailer negligently on the evening of February 18 and hit his car near Kot Khan village and damaged the vehicle. The IO said a case under Sections 279 (rash driving on a public highway) and 427 (mischief) of the IPC has been registered. They were shifted here after the roof of a verandah collapsed at the school after floods. Even after five months, no one is aware of the present status of the school. The building is yet to be repaired and restored for students. Sources said an application to declare the school building unsafe was sent five months ago, but nothing had been done so far. Notably, a major tragedy was averted when the roof of a verandah collapsed at the school in Lohian block. Fortunately, staff and students were not present as the school got over when the incident took place. The students were later shifted to a nearby panchayat ghar. The Block Primary Education Officer (BPEO) and an official from the engineering wing sent a proposal to the higher authorities to declare the building unsafe. He did not just attend shobha yatra functions in Jalandhar city but also toured to Phillaur, Nakodar, Nurmahal and Phagwara for similar events. The Dalit community, which looks upon him as its tallest leader having been the only Dalit CM of Punjab so far, showed much response upon his visit to Jalandhar. Leaders of all political parties, including AAP MP Sushil Rinku, former SAD MLA Pawan Tinu and BJP leader Avinash Chander, greeted him well at the events and Channi reciprocated with the same warmth. There was a long queue of devotees at Guru Ravidas Bhawan in Buta Mandi and all across the shobha yatra route with people thronging by his side asking him to get clicked with them. Channi did not use his security cover and tried to oblige maximum people. He stood in an open jeep keeping his hands folded throughout the procession which had tens of thousands of devotees in attendance. Prior to his participation at the religious programmes, he visited the house of Congress leader and Nakodar halqa in charge Dr Navjot Dahiya. Kulwinder Singh, president of the Democratic Teachers’ Front and a resident of Sidhupur village, said the status of the school was not clear yet. It also did not receive any grant. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said a police team from the CIA Staff, Jalandhar, was patrolling near Nehar Pulli, Baba Budha Ji Nagar. The police observed a person coming from the Kapurthala roadside carrying a polythene bag. Sharma said on seeing the police, the suspect tried to flee the spot. On suspicion, the police chased the youth and nabbed him. During search, the police recovered 1 kg of opium from his possession. The Police Commissioner said the suspect had been identified as Kishan Lal, a resident of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar. The CP said a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the suspect at the Basti Bawa Khel police station. No criminal record of the suspect had been traced so far. Investigation officer (IO) Rajinder Pal Singh said the suspect had been identified as Sandeep Singh, a resident of Malarri village. The IO said the victim, a resident of the same village, complained to the police that he received an extortion call demanding ~5 lakh. The caller threatened to kill his son if he failed to pay the money. The investigation officer said a case under Sections 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (committing a crime with the common intention) of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against the suspect. TRIBUNE PHOTO Jalandhar, February 23 The Adampur police arrested 2 persons and recovered four grams of heroin and 94 intoxicant tablets from their possession. The police laid a naka at the Haripur road in Adampur. Two persons riding a scooter came from the Haripur side. On seeing the police, they turned around and started moving towards the opposite direction. On suspicion, the police nabbed the duo. The suspects have been identified as Yash- pal Singh, a resident of Dhann Mohalla in Jalandhar, and Deepak Gill, resident of Balmiki Gate, Jalandhar. During search, the police recovered four grams of heroin from Yashpal and 94 intoxicant tablets from Deepak Gill. A case was registered against the suspects under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act at the Adampur police station. The police said the suspects would be presented in the court to seek their remand. — TNS Guru Ravidas, a shobha yatra was organised in Phagwara. It began from Guru Ravidas Mandir, Chack Hakim. The yatra concluded here after passing through main bazaars and roads of the town. Investigating officer (IO) Davinder Singh said the suspects had been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, a resident of Meon Wal village falling under the Bilga police station, Vishal, alias Kalu, a resident of Mohalla Shadi Khan, Mehatpur, and Gourav, a resident of Hari Pur village. Kashmir Singh, a resident of Rai Pur Arariyan village, complained to the police that the suspects snatched a sum of ~8,200 from him by pointing a sharp weapon at him on February 9. The investigating officer said a case under Sections 379-B (snatching) and 34 (committing a crime with common intention) of the IPC had been registered against the suspects.
