The body was spotted in the area behind TTS within the RCF complex. The police reached the scene with a team, took the body into custody, and sent it to the mortuary for postmortem examination. The deceased was identified as Sanidev of Jharkhand who had been residing in RCF while working as a labourer for a contractor. The investigation is ongoing. OC MAN BOOKED FOR VISA FRAUD Phagwara: The police have registered a case against a local for allegedly duping another resident of ?12 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Australia. According to the FIR, complainant Jaswinder Singh of Dhaliwal approached the police alleging that Jaswant Singh, alias Jassa, from Lakhan Khurd, had promised to arrange his travel to Australia. The accused allegedly took Rs 12 lakh from him but failed to fulfil the promise and did not return the money.The Police are investigating the matter.No arrest has been made so far. OC MIGRANT NABBED FOR THEFT Phagwara: The police have arrested a man for allegedly breaking into a house in Mohabbat Nagar, Kapurthala, and stealing multiple items. The accused Mritunjay, a native of Khejuri village in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, and currently residing in Mohabbat Nagar, Kapurthala, was taken into custody following a complaint by Sahil Sharma. Mritunjay allegedly entered Sahil Sharma's residence and stole a laptop, keyboard, a mobile phone, Aadhaar card, power bank, RC, and other items on Tuesday night. OC YOUTH HELD WITH INTOXICANTS Phagwara: The police have arrested a young man from Dayalpur village in Kapurthala after allegedly recovering 150 intoxicating tablets from him. The suspect was spotted walking suspiciously near Dayalpur railway crossing. Upon questioning, he identified himself as Rajat, son of Lawrence, a resident of Dayalpur. A search of the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of 150 unmarked intoxicating tablets. Police have registered a case under the NDPS Act. Further investigation is underway. oc Two women among three injured in firing | Four arrested Tribune News Service Villagers are being evacuated from the flooded villages in Sultanpur Lodhi. 22 villages in Mand areas submerged Beas level on the rise |Seechewal sends help to flood-hit Ashok Kaura Phagwara, August13 The swollen Beas river has inundated 22 villages in the Mand areas of Sultanpur Lodhi and the water level in the river has been on the increase, said Sultanpur Lodhi SDM Alka Kalia. According to SDO, drainage, Khushwinder Singh, the water level in the Beas is 1.19 lakh cusecs. He said it is difficult to plug 100 feet wide breach as the flow of gushing water is very high and work on plugging would start when the water level decreases and department is readying sand bags to plug the breach. The SDM said the worstaffected villages are Baupur, Baupur Kadim, Jadid and Sangra where standing paddy crops had been submerged under four to six feet of water. She said residents of Baupur are not ready to leave their houses but are shifting their belongings to some safer places. Meanwhile, environmentalist and Rajya Sabha Member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has pressed into service two motor boats to deliver cooked food and fodder for animals in Baupur. The followers were also rendering help to farmers suffering from ailments by bringing them to hospital in the motor boats for their treatments. Sant Seechewal said his followers have filled sand in more than 20,000 bags to plug the breach when water level decreases in the river. The distrct authorities are maintaining strict vigil at the dhussi bundh. Jalandhar, August 13 A youth was killed by assailants using sharp-edged weapons near Nagra railway crossing here in the wee hours today. Three persons, including two women, were also injured due to indiscriminate gunshots fired by the assailants while they were trying to escape. Deceased Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi (25), was putting up on rent in adjoining Nandanpur. He had gone to attend a religious event where an altercation broke out between him and five other youths. The assailants called in more persons and they attacked Gopi with sharp-edged weapons on his head. He died on the spot. Another youth Rahul, who was with Gopi, escaped by managing to enter a house. The assailants came after him and fired at him too. Two women, who were watching the incident from the rooftop of the same house, also suffered gun wounds in their legs. Gopi’s mother Manjit Kaur alleged that her son was an innocent victim and had been brutally killed by some Phagwara: The Kapurthala police on Tuesday arrested notorious gangster Balwinder Singh, alias Billa, following a brief encounter near Sultanpur Lodhi. On a tip-off, the police set up a barricade to intercept the suspect, who was riding a motorcycle. Instead of stopping, Billa opened fire twice, prompting police to retaliate. One of the bullets struck the gangster in the leg, bringing the chase to an abrupt end. The injured accused was taken into custody and admitted to a hospital. The police recovered a country-made pistol, several cartridges, and impounded his motorcycle. oc Nihangs. “The police must nab his murderers and bring them before her”, she said. Victim Rahul’s father Baldev said, “My son was attending the annual mela where the entry of visitors is not barred. But some visitors were carrying arms to which Gopi and Rahul objected. They succeeded in their plan to kill Gopi but Rahul managed to escape or else they would have killed him too”. In a recent development, Jagdeep met MDMK MP Durai Vaiko to raise the issue of Indians who have gone missing or are stranded in Russia under uncertain circumstances. “MP Vaiko was very supportive. He even took up the matter with the Prime Minister and has been consistently helping us,” Jagdeep said. Jagdeep has been relent- less in his efforts. He has already travelled to Russia in search of his brother and has been in continuous communication with the Indian authorities to seek updates and push for action. In addition to meeting MP Vaiko, Jagdeep also recently met senior Congress leader Raja Warring, who extended his support. Warring held a press conference to bring attention to the issue, amplifying Jagdeep’s voice. On Thursday, Jagdeep will again be going to New Delhi to meet officials from the Ministry of External Affairs. “This is going to be my eighth meeting with them. In the final match of the day, Uttarakhand beat Bihar 3-1. 5 held with 1.5 kg heroin, 7 weapons Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 13 The city police on Wednesday said it arrested five persons and seized 1.5 kg heroin, seven illegal weapons and seven live cartridges from members of a criminal network over the past three weeks. Commissioner of Police (CP) Dhanpreet Kaur said the operation was conducted by the CIA team led by Inspector Surinder Kumar under the supervision of DCP (Investigation) Manpreet Singh Dhillon, ADCP (Investigation) Jayant Puri and ADCP Paramjit Singh. The CP said two of the five accused were arrested on July 18 under Sections 21C, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 25(1B), 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. They were Viney Kumar, alias Mithu, of Guru Nanak Nagar and Major Singh of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar. They were arrested with 1 kg heroin and two pistols (.32 bore) along with two live rounds. During investigations, Kulwinder Singh, alias Raja, of Kabir Nagar and Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar were also arrested. The police seized 300 gm heroin, two pistols (.32 bore and .315 bore) and two live rounds from Raja; and 200 gm heroin, two pistols (.32 bore) and one live round from Gopi. Gagandeep Singh, alias Baba, of Gopal Nagar was also arrested in the case and a pistol (.32 bore) and two live rounds seized from him.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
