The observers, accompanied by Deputy Commissionercum-District Election Officer Himanshu Aggarwal, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma and SSP Ankur Gupta, held detailed parleys with representatives of political parties/candidates. They assured them that the administration was duty-bound to ensure smooth and hassle-free polling process in Jalandhar. The DEO told the parties/candidates that elaborate arrangements had been put in place for the purpose. Area residents said some teams of officials came to remove the posters. “First, they tried to scrap the posters. As it was quite painstaking and taking too long to remove, officials blackened the faces of all candidates and leaders in the posters,” said some shopkeepers in the area. Pictures of defacement of pil- lars and walls underneath the flyover were highlighted in these columns recently. While posters of SAD candidate MS Kaypee, which were loosely pasted on a pillar, were found to be removed this morning, those with Centre’s schemes, larger in size or had a stronger adhesive were blackened. Even pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and slogans and symbol of the BJP were also blackened. Hit by reversing truck, man dies Jalandhar, May 18 A man died after he was crushed between a truck and a wall in the Industrial Area here today. The deceased has been identified as Sajan, a resident of Malum Chakk village in Gurdaspur. The incident took place when the truck driver was reversing the vehicle. The police have registered a case of negligent driving against the truck driver, Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Hasanpur village in Gurdaspur. According to Kasturi Lal, father of the deceased, Sajan owned the truck and had hired Gurpreet as the driver. He said the duo came to the Industrial Area for some work. “Sajan was standing behind the truck near a wall. In the meantime, Gurpreet reversed the vehicle. Sajan got trapped between the truck and the wall, resulting in severe injuries. Gurpreet and bystanders shifted him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” he said. Investigating officer (IO) Amarik Lal said the suspects had been identified as Pawan Kumar, a resident of Chuheki village, his wife Sarabjit Kaur and son Sunil Kumar. Monika, a resident of the same village, told the police that the suspects barged into her house on May 11. They assaulted her and also threatened her with dire consequences.
