City’s main markets are chock-a-block as shopkeepers and vendors have displayed their items outside their shops by encroaching upon roads, giving a tough time to commuters. Encroachments can be seen in several markets, both in old and new city areas. Markets at Jawahar Nagar, Daresi Ground, Civil Lines, Field Ganj, Model Town, Ghumar Mandi and BRS Nagar are witnessing a chaotic situation due to encroachments. Every market is witnessing traffic snarls and parking woes. With Diwali approaching near, traders have put stalls outside their shops for displaying their articles due to which little space is left for vehicular traffic and almost no space for parking. Harpreet Kaur, who came to Ghumar Mandi for shopping, said the situation becomes a complete mess during festivals. “One can see mehndi and Karwa Chauth stalls on roads and there is hardly any space left for parking vehicles. Many makeshift shops have come up to sell various items due to the ongoing festival season. A senior official from the Municipal Corporation said it was not allowed to encroach roads and awareness would be created among shopkeepers for following the norms. The tehbazari wing would be keeping a regular check on encroachers in market areas. Callers told the complainant that they would kill him and his children. The complainant, Ranjit Singh, a resident of Utala village, told the police that in the recently concluded panchayat elections, his wife Rajdeep Kaur contested as a panch candidate in the village. On October 15, he received a call from an international mobile number. He did not pick up the phone. After sometime, he again got a call from the same number and when he received it, the caller started abusing him and said he had to face consequences for being in forefront of the panchayat elections at the village and threatened to shoot him and his children. He said on October 19, again, he received a call from another foreign mobile number. When he picked up the call, the suspect, who had threatened him earlier, again threatened him, Ranjit said. He said on October 17, a woman, Jaspreet Kaur, of his village had also received life threat from some mobile number as the caller threatened to kill her. HIMANSHU MAHAJAN Ludhiana, October 20 Farmers gathered at the main grain market today to protest against the tardy lifting of paddy by making the Ladhowal toll barrier free. Farmers, including women in a large numbers, reached the grain market and staged a dharna. Dilbagh Singh, president of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Kisan Union, said as decided, they reached the toll plaza today and later, officials of the police and administration also intervened in the matter and started the lifting of paddy at grain markets. “Farmers are bearing the brunt and will face losses if paddy is not lifted on time. We had given a call for protest today, hence, gathered here. Since, the lifting was started today, we did not made the toll plaza free. If the lifting is stopped, we will not think twice to make the toll plaza free in protest,” he said. Manjit Singh Dhillon, president of the Arhtiya Association, said they were with farmers and would go by whatever was decided by them. He was upset due to his mother’s illness. His father had died around one year ago. The deceased had divorced his wife seven years ago. He was identified as 35-year-old Harinder Singh. As per information, on Saturday, the man died by suicide by jumping from the roof of a private hospital in Sarabha Nagar. Doctors tried to save the victim but due to serious injuries he could not be saved. After geting information, the police reached the spot and took the body in their custody and kept it in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital. After autopsy, the body would be handed over to his family. ASI Gurmel Singh said the deceased, a resident of the Jamalpur area, had been upset due to his mother’s illness. His mother Sukhdev Kaur was admitted to a hospital for the past 10 days due to which the victim was upset. He jumped off the roof of the hospital on Saturday. After the incident, people took him to the emergency ward where he succumbed during treatment. — TNS MLA launches project to lay water-sewer lines Ludhiana, October 20 Moving forward with the project to construct a road on the other side of the Buddha Nullah, Ludhiana Central MLA Ashok Parashar Pappi launched a project to lay water-sewer lines on a stretch of the road starting from the Dhokka Mohalla point till the Madhopuri puli on Saturday. The project to lay watersewer lines has been launched so that residents in the area should not face any problem after the construction of the road on the other side of the nullah in the Ludhiana Central constituency. The MLA said the water-sewer lines would be laid at a cost of around Rs 38.26 lakh and the road would be built on the other side of the nullah in the Ludhiana Central constituency soon.
