The accused have been identified as Malkit Singh, Pritam Singh and Balveer Singh, all residents of Kara Ram Singh village, and Varindar Singh of Malout in Muktsar Sahib. Hardev Singh of Kara Ram Singh village complained to the police that the accused mentally tortured his father, who committed suicide on February 21 morning. OC DRIVER BOOKED FOR ACCIDENT Phagwara: The police have booked an unidentified SUV driver for causing death by negligence. Malkit Singh of Mujaffarpur village complained to the police that a vehicle hit his brother Gurjeet in Sarihn village Adda and killed him. A case had been registered against the accused. OC WOMAN HELD FOR SMUGGLING Phagwara: The police have arrested a woman on the charge of smuggling and selling liquor. The accused has been identified as Nirmal Kuar, alias Nimbo, of Jannia village. Twelve bottles of whisky were recovered from her house. A case under Sections 61/1/14 of the Punjab Excise Act has registered against the accused. OC Tehsildar’s reader, peon get 5-year RI in bribery case Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, February 22 The court of Palwinder Jit Kaur, Judge, special court, Hoshiarpur, has sentenced two accused in a bribery case for five years. The Vigilance Bureau on January 14, 2020, had nabbed a reader and peon of Tehsildar, Hoshiarpur, redhanded while accepting a bribe of Rs 10, 000. Sarwan Chand, reader, and Rakesh Kumar, peon, both posted at Tehsildar office, were nabbed on the complaint of Hardeep Singh of village Ajjowal, Hoshiarpur. The complainant had approached the bureau that the reader had sought a bribe of Rs 14,000 for the registry of a plot for clearing the registry without NOC, else he would mark an objection and the deal was finalised for at Rs 10,000. The bureau had laid a trap and both were nabbed while accepting Rs10,000 from the complainant. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against both at VB police station, Jalandhar. Listening to the arguments of the prosecution and the defence, the court, on February 21, decided “prosecution has been able to prove that the accused persons had committed an offence under Section 7 of the PC Act and Section 120-B of the IPC. Hence both are held guilty and convicted”. Sarwan Chand and Rakesh Kumar are sentenced under Section 7 of the PC Act read with Section 120-B, IPC, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for five years and to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 each. Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal inaugurated the festival. On the first night, famous Punjabi singer Alaap Sikandar mesmerised the audience. He made the atmosphere musical with his popular songs like ‘Main Nivaan Mera Murshid Uccha’, ‘Saj Ke Na Niklo Sohniyo Mausam Kharab Hai’ and others. The audience welcomed him with a lot of applause. Prior to this, a special bird watching programme was held at the Pong Dam in the morning which was attended by environmentalists as well as students. Jalandhar, February 22 In a proud moment for Jalandhar, Dhanpreet Kaur today assumed charge as the city’s first woman Police Commissioner. A 2006-batch officer, Kaur was previously serving as Inspector General (IG) of Ludhiana Range before being appointed to lead the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police. Upon taking charge, she was accorded a guard of honour by Punjab Police personnel. She then toured the Police Commissionerate complex and held a meeting with senior officers, including GOs and those of SP and ACP rank. Discussions centred on directives from the DGP and the state government, particularly focusing on crime prevention and a zero-tolerance policy against corruption. Addressing the media, Kaur outlined her key priorities, placing a strong emphasis on combating the drug menace in the city. She vowed to crack down on drug availability while also ensuring a focus on de-addiction and rehabilitation programmes. She also highlighted the need to curb street crimes such as snatching, which directly impacted public safety. Kaur stressed the importance of a strong police-public partnership and expressed her commitment to improving Jalandhar’s traffic management. She acknowledged the effective campaigns initiated by her predecessor Swapan Sharma and pledged to build on them. She further said law and order in the city would be strengthened, with enhanced surveillance through Smart City cameras and improved control room operations. Public grievances, especially those related to fraudulent agents and other crimes, will be given the top priority, she said. Cop held for accepting bribe Govt draws flak over closure of school Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 22 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its ongoing crackdown on corruption in the state, has arrested a head constable Kulwinder Singh posted at Police Station, Division-5, Jalandhar Commissionerate, for accepting a bribe of Rs 4,500. Disclosing this here today, a VB spokesperson stated that the arrest followed an investigation into an online complaint filed by a resident of Bhargo Camp on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. The complainant said a case had been registered against him at the police station during which the accused constable unlawfully retained his mobile phone without any documentation. The said the accused had demanded Rs 10,000 to return the phone and provide assistance in the case, threatening to file additional charges under cybercrime laws if the demand was not met. Hoshiarpur, February 22 The government is under fire for its failure in the education sector as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Smart School near the Maqsudan bypass in Jalandhar remains closed despite being built at a cost of crores. This issue was highlighted in A head constable in the custody of the Vigilance Bureau. He further said as per the complaint, the accused had already accepted Rs 4,500 via Google Pay and continued to demand the remaining Rs 5,500 despite having been transferred to another location. Upon inquiry, the VB has found the allegations to be true. Consequently, a case has been registered against Kulwinder under Section 7, 13(2) read with 13(1)(A) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with Sections 308(2), 308(3), 316(5), 336(2), 336(3) and 340(2) of the BNS at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar Range. The accused would be presented before the competent court tomorrow and further investigation into this case was under progress, he added. Death of man during wedding due to heart attack, say police Villager booked for celebratory firing at the party Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 22 The Goraya police have booked a Dhuleta villager for firing shots in violation of norms and endangering people’s safety, during a wedding at Chak Des Raj village on February 17. The accused has been identified as Hariman Singh, alias Harman, of Bara Pind, Goraya. The FIR was registered today after a video of the incident went viral on social media. Even though the video shows a man collapsing abruptly on the floor as soon as a man standing next to him fires a shot at the wedding, the police maintained that the cause of the death of the deceased was due to heart attack. The incident took place during a wedding at Chak Des Raj village at an NRI’s house on February 17. In the video, a turbaned man is seeing firing an aerial shot. Immediately after the shot, another man falls on the floor. The man with the gun continues firing two more shots until people at the wedding notice something amiss. The FIR states that accused Harman, fired aerial shots at the wedding without any concern for the safety of the guests and relatives attending the event. Even though there is a ban on the carrying of fire arms in weddings, he also took his gun to the event. A case has been registered against Harman, who is still at large. The deceased was reportedly the husband of the village sarpanch. SHO of the Goraya police station Gursharan Singh said, “An FIR has been registered against the man for bringing a gun and firing shots at the wedding. Former BJP Rajya Sabha MP Avinash Rai Khanna has taken cognizance of the matter, calling it a gross violation of children’s right to education. He has raised the issue before the State Human Rights Commission, demanding accountability from the government. Khanna accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led government of misleading the public with grand promises while failing to deliver on the ground. He termed the school’s closure a glaring failure in the education sector, directly affecting students’ futures. Khanna urged the commission to seek a report from the state government explaining why the school remains shut. He also demanded immediate steps to reopen it. Additionally, he called for an inquiry into whether other government schools in Punjab are also closed and sought a report on vacant teaching positions, pressing for their urgent fulfilment.
