The suspect has been identified as Gurbachan Singh, a resident of Umare Wal village. Investigating officer (IO) Paramjit Singh said 8.100 kg of poppy husk was recovered from his possession. He managed to flee from the spot. A case under Section 15(B), 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered. OC EIGHT BOOKED FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have booked eight persons on the charge of assaulting a covillager. Investigating officer Jaspal Singh said the suspects had been identified as Ajay, Aakash, Papu, Gori, Gairi, Haneef, Ashish and Ravi Pal, residents of Muhem village. Bhupinder Singh, a resident of the same village, told the police the suspects waylaid him in the village. They attacked him with weapons and also threatened him. OC MOTORCYCLE SNATCHED Phagwara: Three unidentified miscreants snatched a motorcycle from Aditya Thakur, a resident of Jalandhar Cantonment near Phagwara on Sunday. The police have registered a case. OC 8 families left homeless as fire breaks out in shanties Belongings reduced to ashes; no loss of life reported Tribune News Service Kapurthala, March 26 As many as eight families went shelterless after the shanties in which they were residing at Kadupur village on the Kartarpur road caught fire on Monday evening. The belongings of the poor families turned into ashes within minutes. However, no loss of life was reported in the incident. Fire extinguishers reached the spot and managed to douse the flames in two hours. Palwinder Singh, SHO of the Kotwali police station, said the fire was reported around 4:30 pm yesterday. PCR teams, which were the first to reach the spot, rescued all inhabitants to safety. Smoke emanates from shanties at a slum in Kapurthala. Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal said all eight families were rescued safely as fire tenders and officials of the civil and police administration rushed to the spot immediately. He said the situation was in control and all possible measures would be taken to avoid such incidents in future. Girl, mother die in road accident Talwara, March 26 A woman and her daughter were killed in a road accident at Kamluh Adda village on the Hajipur-Mukerian road. According to information, Ravi Kumar, along with his wife Muskaan (40) and daughter Harmanpreet Kaur (6), a resident of Bagopur Jattan village, Gurdaspur district, was returning on his motorcycle from Baba Badbhag Singh after attending Hola Mohalla. When he reached near Kamluh village, his bike collided head-on with another bike. As a result, they fell on the road. A tipper coming from the rear ran over Muskaan and Harmanpreet, killing them on the spot. After getting information, the Hajipur police reached the spot. Ravi, who suffered injuries in the accident, has been admitted to a government hospital in Mukerian. — OC Elderly man robbed of gold ring, cell phone Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 26 In a broad daylight robbery, a senior citizen fell victim to bikeborne robbers in Adarsh Nagar, one of the posh localities in the city. The incident took place when the victim, Ramesh Seh- gal, went for a morning walk near his residence. As per information, three masked motorcycle-borne miscreants confronted Sehgal, wielding sharp weapons and threatening his life. The robbers snatched his gold ring and a mobile phone before fleeing towards the main road. Passers-by informed the victim’s family members and the police about the incident. After getting information, the police reached the spot and recorded the victim’s statement. They are scrutinising c m y b the footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby to identify the suspects. Initial findings suggest that the robbers fled towards the Kapurthala Chowk after committing the crime. The police said the suspects would be arrested soon. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH Toll-free number 1950 launched to get info related to elections: DC Says law & order should be maintained at all costs Tribune News Service Kapurthala, March 26 Deputy Commissioner-cumDistrict Election Officer Amit Kumar Panchal today held a meeting with all Assistant Returning Officers (AROs), police officials and nodal officers to review the preparations and arrangements for Lok Sabha polls. Accompanied with SSP Vatsala Gupta, DC Panchal pointed out that law and order situation should be maintained at all costs during elections, besides timely accomplishing adequate arrangements at all polling stations. He said security and vigil should be increased as the election process was gaining momentum so as to ensure free and fair polls. The DC also took detailed information from all AROs and asked them to increase vigil in their areas in association with the police and other officials concerned. SSP Vatsala Gupta also directed police officials to further enhance daily vigil, besides setting up nakas at all boundaries of Kapurthala district. She said all suspicious activities should be tapped so that requisite actions could be taken, if needed. The DC also interacted with nodal officers to review the ongoing SVEEP activities, training of polling staff, providing material to polling parties and implementation of the model code of conduct.
