Investigating officer (IO) Inspector Kamlesh Kaur said the victim complained to police that the mother-son duo conspired to kidnap her on the pretext of marriage. The victim said Lovejeet repeatedly raped her, following which she became pregnant. A case under Sections 376 (rape), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 506 of the IPC has been registered. OC BIKER DIES IN ROAD MISHAP Phagwara: The Bilga police have arrested a car driver on the charges of causing death by negligence and mischief. Investigating officer (IO) Ashwani Kumar said the suspect had been identified as Soni, a resident of Mowai village falling under the Bilga police station. Bharast Mehata, a resident of Mohalla Chaunni, Ludhiana, told the police that his brothers - Shubam Mehra and Arash Deep - were returning home on a motorcycle on April 4. A car hit their two-wheeler near Partap Pura village. Shubam died in the accident. The IO said a case under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337, 338 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 427 (mischief) of the IPC had been registered against the suspect. OC FOUR BOOKED ON ASSAULT CHARGE Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked four persons, including a woman, on the charges of assault and committing a crime with common intention. Investigating officer (IO) Jagjit Singh said the suspects had been identified as Gian Singh, a resident of Pasla village, his wife Gurden Kaur, Manjit Singh, a resident of the same village, and his brother Sarabjt Singh. Som Lal, a resident of the same village, told the police that the suspects assaulted him on March 19 and injured them. The IO said a case under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 34 (committing crime with common intention) of the IPC had been registered against the suspects. He was greeted by S Srinivas, General Manager of the RCF and other , senior officers. Gulati inspected coach manufacturing process in the workshop. He examined various types of coaches being made by the RCF such as LHB AC coaches, MEMU Civil, police and excise officials with seized material at Kishansingh Wala in Kapurthala. TRIBUNE PHOTO Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Kapurthala, April 6 Joint teams of the civil and police officials carried out an extensive operation to check illicit liquor in the city and the Mand areas yesterday. They seized 23 litres of illicit liquor and destroyed 3,200 kg lahan on the spot at Kishansingh Wala. Deputy Commissionercum-District Election Officer Amit Kumar Panchal said officials of the excise, police departments and the administration were keeping a close vigil on illicit liquor. The teams also seized seven tarpaulins, two plastic drums and an iron drum. A case has also been registered at the Fattu Dhinga police station. He said strict action would be initiated against those indulged in this practice. In view of the Lok Sabha poll, the teams are carrying out checking at all authorised liquor vends, excise licensee holders like hard bars and L-17 licensee. Frequent and periodic raids were being conducted in the Mand areas of Sultanpur Lodhi to check any kind of illicit liquor. He said 15,705 litres of illicit liquor (lahan) had so far been seized and destroyed during the joint operation of the excise department, police department and the local administration. The DC mentioned that L-17 licensees, paint shops and furniture shops were inspected by excise inspectors in all four sub-divisions. The District Election Officer said the static and mobile nakas besides flag marches were also being carried out across the district for the past few days to keep a check on suspicious activities. He said enforcement activities would be further increased as per the guidelines of the Election Commission. Meanwhile, SDMs also conducted surprise checks in their respective areas. Pertinently, the Deputy Commissioner also held a review meeting with Sub-Divisional Magistrates, police officials and excise officials. He emphasised that no unauthorised movement of liquor should be done in their respective areas. Gulati, who is Director General of the Railway’s Human Resources Department, held a meeting with recognised unions/associations of the RCF Issues pertaining to . staff and their welfare were discussed in the meeting. He stressed upon the importance of cordial relations between unions and administration and at the same time reaching out to them to cooperate in increasing the production of coaches. While applauding the RCF’s record coach production in 2023-24, Gulati appreciated its contribution in making Indian Railways attuned to world standards and stressed upon the RCF to work hard to conserve its apex position in designing and manufacturing. He applauded the RCF for its technological developments in coach manufacturing and advised it to follow the best practices to enhance its production as the Railway Board is keen on providing assistance to it in this field. Jalandhar, April 6 As wheat arrival in grain markets is expected from April 10 onwards, SDMs of Nakodar, Shahkot and Jalandhar-1 today visited various mandis to review the arrangements for smooth procurement during this season. The district has set the target to procure nearly 5.18 lakh MT wheat during the season. For this, adequate arrangements have been made in 80 mandis in the district. Nakodar SDM Gursimran Singh, Shahkot SDM Rishab Bansal and Jalandhar-1 SDM Balbir Raj, along with officials from the Mandi Board, procurement agencies and food supply, visited mandis at Nakodar, Shahkot and Kartarpur today. As per information, the Police Control Room received a call regarding the lost children. Swiftly responding to the situation, the police rescued the children, who had inadvertently travelled from Bullowal to Jalandhar by bus, and lost their way home. After tireless efforts spanning several hours, the police managed to locate the parents of the children. They were safely handed over to their parents. Amritsar, April 6 Four armed persons looted a branch of ICICI Bank on the Tarn Taran road here today. The suspects, with faces covered, decamped with Rs 12 lakh from the bank. While one of the suspects remained outside, three of them entered the bank and barged into cashier’s cabin. They pointed a pistol at the cashier, looted cash and fled from the spot. Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations) Harpreet Singh, reached the spot and initiated probe. He scanned the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area and on the bank premises to get clue about the suspects, who came on a scooter. In a major lapse on part of the bank authorities, there was no security guard at the bank which made it an easy target for robbers. Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “The police have identified the suspects involved in the ICICI Bank dacoity and raids are on to nab them. We are not sharing the names of assailants as it will hamper the investigation. PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, April 6 Despite private schools claiming that they are complying with the state government directives by providing a list of recommended shops for purchasing books for the new academic session, parents continue to face harassment. They report that while complete set of books is available with recommended shopkeepers, individual books are not available in any bookstore across the city. The situation has exacerbated the burden on parents, who are visiting several shops to inquire about the availability of individual books. They are compelled to purchase the complete set of books from one of the recommended shops. Manish Gupta, a parent, said shopkeepers told him that while schools have arranged complete sets for LKG to Class VIII, individual books were not available as these were to be sourced from private publishers. He alleged these publishers had subcontracted distribution to a select few contractors who exclusively supply to certain retailers. Lokesh Mishra, a resident, visited several bookshops at Mahiran Gate in search of LKG books for his daughter, but to no avail. He said despite Mahiran Gate being a Continued on page 2
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
