Two top positions in the state are grabbed by Ludhiana girls Aditi and Alisha Sharma. Both are students of Teja Singh Sutantar Memorial Senior Secondary School, Shimlapuri. The PSEB has declared the merit list of 316 students, who have scored more than 96 per cent marks. Of the 316 students, 59 are from Ludhiana district. Though it is a matter of pride that these Ludhiana students made it to the merit list but if compared to the previous year, the number of students on the merit list is less this time. Not only this, the pass percentage of Ludhiana district, which is the biggest district in the state with the maximum number of students, has slipped to 95.27 per cent and the district is at 22nd spot while most of the districts are ahead of Ludhiana. Amritsar has the maximum pass percentage of students at 99.24 per cent. 11 Ludhiana students on top 10 spots on merit list Though the rank of Ludhiana may have slipped to 22nd but on the merit list, on top 10 positions, there are 11 students from Ludhiana, besides from other districts. Low pass percentage This year, 38,387 students had appeared in Ludhiana district, of these, 36,573 were passed and the overall pass percentage was 95.27 per cent while last year, it was 95.44 per cent and in 2022, it was 99.06 per cent. They were seen embracing their parents, teachers and classmates on the occasion. Close shave for man as car catches fire at village Tribune News Service Ludhiana, April 18 A moving car caught fire late on Wednesday night in Shahpur village under the Payal police station in the Khanna area. The car driver had a fortunate police tell city spa centres escape as after seeing smoke coming out of the engine, he stopped the vehicle and got out of it. He was going to his village. When he reached near Shahpur village, he saw smoke coming out from the engine, he stopped the car but it caught fire. Meanwhile, he sought help from villagers who extinguished the fire. Eyewitnesses said wheat crop was ripe on both sides of the road where the vehicle caught fire. If the fire had reached the crop, many acres of crop would have been reduced to ashes. Ludhiana, April 18 The Ludhiana police issued strict orders to spa centres and massage parlours, asking them to adhere to the norms else warned them of legal action. DCP (Rural and Headquarters) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja while exercising the powers of the Executive Magistrate under Section 144 of the CrPc issued orders that state that: “Sometimes, some of the owners/managers of spa centres and massage parlours falling within the jurisdiction of the Police Commissionerate, Ludhiana, are indulging in carrying out anti-social activities in contravention of law at such centres. They are entertaining people without proper identification and providing them illegal services, which fall under various offences of the IPC and other local and special Acts. To prevent any annoyance, injury to any person and danger to the human life and to check ille- gal activities of anti-social elements and further keeping in view the public safety, hereby directing all spa centres and massage parlours to comply with the guidelines” The DCP further stated that all owners of the spa and massage centres should put good quality day and night CCTV cameras to cover all entry and exit points and also clients at reception desk, with DVR storage of up to 30 days with UPS backup. The owners should be responsible to maintain the record of every customer visiting the centre in a register/computer and a copy of identity proof should be kept along with working mobile number of the client. The owner should ensure police verification of all employees working at the centre, including foreign workers, if any, along with record of copies of necessary documents such as Aadhaar card and passport. The owners shall ensure that foreign workers working in their establishments are on proper visa, which enables them to work in the country. There should not be any secret entry or exit gates or secret cabins in the establishments. The orders also mention that the owners should be jointly responsible for ensuring that no violation of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, The Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling Act, 2012, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, 2012, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and Indian Penal Code (IPC) etc, is committed on their premises. “The owners should also ensure that no alcoholic beverages are served at the centres and no abuse of intoxicating substances or drugs masqueraded as hookah bar are allowed at such places. For the above purpose, the owners include the owner of the property as well as of the massage and spa centres,” the orders state. ASI caught taking ~4,500 bribe Tribune News Service Ludhiana, April 18 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Wednesday apprehended ASI Gurpreet Singh, posted at the Jodhewal police station, Ludhiana Commissionerate, redhanded while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,500. Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson for the state VB said the suspect was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Vijay Kumar, a resident of Kakowal road, Ludhiana city. He said the complainant had approached the Vigilance Bureau and alleged that the ASI demanded a bribe of Rs 4,500 from him for submitting a chargesheet in a police case registered by him. The recoveries were made since March 16 when the Election Commission of India (ECI) had imposed the MCC while announcing the election schedule in the country. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C told The Tribune on Thursday that various state and Central agencies have seized cash and other prohibited items worth Rs 243.99 crore, including Rs 242.01 crore recoveries by the agencies and another seizures worth Rs 198.28 lakh during the interception of vehicles and people at special election nakas (check posts) set up across the state between March 16 and April 17. He said Punjab had ranked fifth in the country with seizures worth Rs 311 crore made between March 1 and April 15. Sibin said the maximum seizure amounting to Rs 158.75 crore was made by the state police, followed by Rs 20.42 crore worth recoveries by the Border Security Force (BSF), Rs 6.79 crore by the state Excise Department, Rs 5 crore by state Goods and Services Tax/ Commercial ~5,601.35 lakh (SOURCE: ECI, FIGURES BETWEEN MARCH 16 AND APRIL 17) Tax Department, Rs 3.62 crore by the Income Tax Department, Rs 2.74 crore by the Customs Department, Rs 1.67 crore by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the seizures worth Rs 44.88 crore were made by other agencies in different parts of the state. The district-wise seizures showed that Amritsar topped the state with the highest recoveries worth Rs 56.01 crore, followed by Tarn Taran Rs 45.24 crore, Ferozepur Rs 34.78 crore and Fazilka Rs 33.38 crore. Among other districts, c m y b Gurdaspur logged recoveries amounting to Rs 7.59 crore, Kapurthala Rs 5.17 crore, Jalandhar 15.23 crore, Hoshiarpur Rs 4.63 crore, Nawanshahr Rs 73 lakh, Ropar Rs 1.32 crore, Mohali Rs 1.45 crore, Fatehgarh Sahib Rs 53 lakh, Moga Rs 70 lakh, Muktsar Rs 73 lakh, Faridkot Rs 55 lakh, Bathinda Rs 1.81 crore, Mansa Rs 88 lakh, Sangrur Rs 10.28 crore, Barnala Rs 2.2 crore, Patiala Rs 1.37 crore, Pathankot Rs 49 lakh, and Malerkotla district seized cash and other material amounting to Rs 69 lakh during the past one month. “Tight security arrangements have been made to conduct the elections in free, fair, transparent and peaceful manner in the state,” the CEO asserted while stating that inter-state checkpoints were being monitored roundthe-clock with 48 hi-tech CCTV cameras to check illegal smuggling of drugs, liquor, cash and other goods across the state. He revealed that flying squad teams were monitoring 351 vehicles equipped with hi-tech CCTV cameras (three vehicles for each Assembly constituency) in all 117 Assembly segments of the state. “They are being monitored at all times through the district control room, with live feed being monitored 24x7 in the state control room,” Sibin said. The CEO said civil and police officials of the state had been directed to strictly implement the MCC to ensure the free, fair, transparent, peaceful and smooth conduct of the election process. “The inter-state coordination and vigilance by the BSF and other agencies concerned in the border districts has been strengthened to check the inflow of arms and narcotics from across the border,” he said. Divulging the item-wise continued on page 2 fire breaks out at house Tribune News Service Ludhiana, April 18 A house was set on fire by some unidentified miscreants at Sector 32A, Chandigarh road, here on Wednesday. A pet dog present inside the house succumbed to its burn injuries. A case under Sections 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage of one hundred), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to damage house, etc), 429 (mischief by killing, maiming cattle, etc ) of the IPC was registered against the miscreants. Investigating officer ASI Avtar Singh said he, along with the police party, was patrolling on the Chandigarh road when he received information from the police control room that fire broke out in a house in Sector 32. He said he reached the spot and found that the entire ground floor of the house had completely damaged and no member of the house was present in or outside the house. However, a pet dog present inside the house died after getting burn injuries. During preliminary investigation, it seemed that the fire had not broken out accidentally in the house rather some unidentified miscreants might had set it on fire intentionally, the ASI said. He said investigation was on but so far there was no clue regarding the miscreants. Soon, the police would crack the case. Fire officials who reached the spot to douse the flames said a short-circuit seemed to be the cause of the fire. Firemen denied rumours of LPG cylinder blast in the house.
