In some instances, it has come to light that sweepers of the Municipal Corporation (MC) indulge in burning the waste while the civic body continues to be in slumber. In complete violation of the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the sweepers were seen burning organic waste at Sarabha Nagar early this morning. The Council of Engineers has also field a complaint in this regard on Monday. Sharing the incident, engineer Kapil Arora, president of the council, said this morning around 7:15 am, he saw that organic waste was being burnt near a school at Sarabha Nagar on Gurdwara Singh Sabha Road. “When I enquired, the person, who claimed to be an employee of the corporation, accepted that he, along with another sweeper, has burnt the same as no one comes to the place to collect the organic waste” he said. As per the directions of the Supreme Court and NGT, the burning of waste and causing damage to the environment is a punishable offence and the MC has been issuing challans against violators but now when employees of the civic body are indulging in such an activity, against whom action will be taken. “We have already taken up the matter of burning of organic waste and garbage by the corporation, LIT and others with the NGT and the tribunal has appointed the Court Commissioner to verify facts regarding solid waste management in Ludhiana at 23 places, including burning of organic waste by MC sweepers and others. It is not the only incident where organic waste are burnt openly without any fear. Gursewak Singh, another resident from the Jalandhar bypass area, said: “Burning of garbage is a normal practice here. Many times, waste gets collected in vacant plots, which is burnt by the people later. The MC should keep a check on the issue,” he said. Another resident from BRS Nagar said he had often seen sweepers and workers burning organic waste in morning hours. It not only adds to pollution but also destroys the garbage that could be converted into organic manure. Vipal Malhotra, health officer of the Municipal Corporation, said they had issued strict instructions to sweepers not to burn waste and action was taken against those who were found indulging in same. The MC is also conducting training of the sweepers at regular intervals. He said: “Though these sweepers claim to be working with the civic body but many times it is observed that they are employed by councillors (former and aspiring). They burn waste and indulge in such practices. They generally claim to be MC workers but in reality, they are employed by a specific person and not by the corporation.” Two arrested with 5 attack two villagers over 620-kgpoppyhusk, political enmity in Jagraon ~20K drug money Tribune News Service Ludhiana, October 7 The Khanna City-2 police claimed to have nabbed two persons and seized 620 kg of poppy husk from their possession. The police also recovered Rs 20,000 drug money and four mobile phones from the suspects. They also seized a truck (bearing registration no PB13BD3071), which was being used by the duo to smuggle poppy husk. Inspector Jagjiwan Ram said he along with a police team had laid a naka outside Pristine Mall on the national highway in Khanna for keeping an eye on anti-social elements and drug peddlers. During the checking, a truck was was signalled to stop for checking on suspicion. “When the police searched the vehicle, 620 kg of poppy husk was seized. The driver and his companion failed to give any satisfactory reply about the presence of narcotics in the truck. Both suspects were arrested and a case under the NDPS Act was registered against them,” he said. Police officials said now, police remand of the suspects would be sought from court so that in the further questioning, the entire drug supply line could be busted and big drug suppliers be arrested. — TNS Ludhiana, October 7 Five persons attacked two residents of Amargarh Kaler village in Jagraon allegedly over old political enmity. The victims suffered injuries in the attack. On the complaint of the complainant, Baldev Singh, a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against the five unidentified assailants and further investigation was launched by the police in the matter. The complainant said he was a former sarpanch of the village and he had political enmity with some residents belonging to the opposite party. Last month, Paddy influx begins his political opponent’s nephew Karanvir Singh had got registered a case against him and his friend Amaninder Singh, alias Babbu, under various sections of the BNS and the Arms Act. Since the case was registered on baseless charges, he had already submitted an application to a senior official of the Ludhiana rural police for a probe into the matter. The complainant said on October 5, he, along with his friend Amaninder, was going to the house of Gurjit Singh on his Mahindra Scorpio vehicle. On the way, when he stopped the vehicle to answer the nature’s call, Karanvir, Jatinder and three uniden- tified persons came in a Maruti Brezza vehicle. They were carrying sharp weapons. Before he could understand anything, the suspects attacked him and left him seriously injured. After listening to his shrieks, when his friend Amaninder came to save him, the suspects fled the scene in their vehicle. He said he informed the police and lodged a formal complaint against the assailants and demanded that the police should arrest the suspects and put them behind bars. Investigating officer SI Jagjit Singh said after registering a case, further investigation was launched in the matter. Three robbers held; mobiles, laptop, sharp weapons seized Tribune News Service Ludhiana, October 7 The Ludhiana police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers and arrested three of its members. The police recovered five mobile phones, a laptop, two motorcycles and sharp weapons from them. The suspects have been identified as Gurkirat Singh, alias Guri (29), a resident of Kohara, Jamalpur, Angad Kumar (25), resident of Mohalla Hargobind Nagar, and Rinku Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh, at present staying in the Tajpur Road area. ADCP (Crime) Amandeep Singh Brar in a statement issued stated that CIA-2 incharge inspector Rajesh Sharma was patrolling on the Kakka Dhola road where he got a tip-off that the suspects were operating a gang of robbers and they had been looting people by pointing sharp weapons at them. As per information, they had committed several mobile snatchings and loot in the recent past in city areas. Brar said the suspects were on the way to Khasi Kalan on a stolen motorcycle. The police team laid a naka and signalled them to stop for checking. Following which, they were cornered and arrested. Later during question- ing, looted mobile phones, motorcycles and sharp weapons were recovered from them. The ADCP said the suspects had looted a laptop from some Jalandhar-based person on October 1 at Samrala Chowk here. Now, its owner would be traced and the laptop would be handed over to him. One of the accomplices of the gang members, identified as Ajay Kumar of Mundian Kalan, was at large and a raid was being conducted to nab him. BJP submits plaint to DC Ludhiana, October 7 The BJP has alleged that step-motherly treatment was meted out to candidates of the party in the panchayat elections to be held on October 15. Alleges step-motherly treatment to candidates Rajneesh Dhiman, president, Ludhiana BJP said poll officials , were not working in a transparent manner as BJP candidates were being threatened and treated badly as there was a tremendous pressure on the officials from the state government. A complaint was filed but to no avail. — TNS Make arrangements for panchayat poll, govt schools told Ludhiana, October 7 All government — primary and senior secondary — schools in the district have been issued necessary directions to prepare polling booths on their premises for the panchayat poll, which will be held on October 15. All 1,584 government schools in the district, of which 993 are primary schools, will be made polling booths for the upcoming elections. District Education Officer (Elementary) Ravinder Kaur said the schools had been directed to make necessary arrangements on their premises so that voters did not face any problem. Polling booths would be established at all government schools in rural areas. Polling teams would reach respective booths on October 14. The necessary instructions include that the polling room (booth) should be neat and clean. In case, the school has kept any material in the room, it should be shifted to another room. Besides, washrooms, to be used by staff and voters, should be hygienic. There should be proper arrangement of water in the washrooms. Besides, the school authorities are asked to make arrangement of drinking water. It should be ensured that the booths are well equipped with fans and lights. TRIBUNE PHOTO: HIMANSHU MAHAJAN Ludhiana, October 7 Acting against illegal constructions, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Ludhiana, demolished an underconstruction illegal hall and a shop on government land in the Transport Nagar area on Monday. The action was taken by a joint team of the MC and Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT). Further, the civic body team razed around 15 temporary and permanent encroachments on the road portion in Ghoda Colony. Both sites fall under the Zone B of the MC. The Zone D team of the MC also demolished an underconstruction illegal shop on c m y b A structure on a government land being demolished in Transport Nagar. the Chaar Khamba road in the Model Town area. Civic body officials stated that the drive against illegal constructions was conducted on the directions of MC Com- missioner Aaditya Dachalwal. Assistant Town Planner (ATP), Zone B, Davinder Singh, said the LIT had recently highlighted that someone was trying to encroach upon the government land in Transport Nagar and illegal construction was going on at the site. The area was also demarcated by the LIT, following which action was taken against the illegal construction by a joint team of the MC and LIT on Monday. Speaking about the action-taken against illegal construction in Model Town, Building inspector Paulparneet Singh said the civic body had received a complaint against the same, following which action was taken on Monday.— TNS
