The deceased has been identified as Anwar Ali, a resident of Haripur Barwala Road, Dera Bassi. His helper, Lucky, a resident of Chandigarh, suffered serious injuries in the mishap. The collision was so severe that the front cabin of the canter was badly damaged. The driver of the vehicle got stuck in the cabin. Road Safety Force Sub-Inspector Sukhdev Singh said his team reached the spot after getting information from the control room. They pulled out the driver from the cabin. They shifted the canter driver and the helper to the hospital, where Anwar was declared dead on arrival. According to information, the suspect, Manjit Singh, who was working at the restaurant, was caught stealing electrical equipment. Most of the candidates chose to contest as Independent as they were not associated with any political party while some candidates decided to go solo after they were not given tickets by political parties they were associated with. Out of 80 candidates, some rebels are going to play the role of a spoiler because they may cause dent in the voting share of the political party they were earlier associated with. Parvinder Lapran, who was earlier associated with the Congress and also remained councillor from the party, joined the BJP in May this year. Lapran had clout in his area and he might eat into the major share of vote bank which in turn would play a spoilsport for the BJP from Ward No. 51. HIMANSHU MAHAJAN Khanna farmer Man gets life term for murder attempts suicide over mobile theft suspicion at Shambhu border Legal Correspondent Dhana went with Gurdeep Tribune News Service Ludhiana, December 15 Ranjodh Singh, a 57-year-old farmer from Ratanheri village in Khanna, allegedly tried to end his life by consuming sulphas at Shambhu border on Saturday. Ranjodh took the extreme step as he reportedly distressed by the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on a hunger strike in support of farmers’ demands. Sukhdeep Singh, son of Ranjodh, said his father was present at the protest site and was deeply troubled by the deteriorating condition of Dallewal. Sukhdeep said his father was admitted to the ICU, where his condition was stated to stable. Jagtar Singh, a villager, said Ranjodh had shared his plans to join the morcha with farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher before leaving for Shambhu border. Ludhiana, December 15 The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Saru Mehta Kaushik has sentenced Gurdeep Singh, alias Saggu, a resident of Majri village, Dakha to rigorous life imprisonment for killing a man on suspicion of mobile phone theft. The court also imposed a fine of ~25,000 on the convict. The incident took place on November 16, 2021, when Gurdeep Singh attacked Dhana Singh with a wooden baton at his residence in Majri village. According to the prosecution, the attack stemmed from Gurdeep’s suspicion that Dhana Singh had stolen his mobile phone. Despite medical efforts, Dhana succumbed to his injuries. The case came to light when Bhag Singh, brother of the deceased, reported the incident to the police. In his statement to Inspector Jatinder Singh on November 17, 2021, Bhag Singh stated that on his motorcycle for some work at Swaddikalan village. When his brother did not return, he, along with his sister Charanjit Kaur, went to the house of accused. They witnessed Gurdeep Singh striking him with a wooden baton. Upon confrontation, the accused fled the scene with the weapon. Before passing away, Dhana Singh informed his family that the accused was having suspicion of stealing his mobile phone, which led to the brutal assault. The accused was arrested and charged with murder. During the trial, the accused pleaded not guilty, but the court found him guilty after examining the evidence. The judge emphasised the gravity of the crime, noting that such acts of violence could not be tolerated. The verdict serves as a stern reminder of the legal consequences of taking the law into one’s own hands. Ludhiana, December 15 Two miscreants barged into a government school at Kaunke Kalan village here on Wednesday. The Sadar Jagraon police identified the suspects and registered a case against them in this regard. They have been identified as Sandeep Kumar and Vicky, both residents of Indira Colony, Dakha. In his complaint to the police, Pargat Singh, who works as a watchman at Government Senior Secondary School, Kaunke Kalan village, he stays in the school at night. On December 4, he locked all rooms of the school and went to sleep around 10 pm. When he was taking a round of the school around 4 am, he was shocked to see that the lock of the principal room was lying broken. “When I went inside the room, I found an inverter, an LED TV, a portable speaker system, CCTV cameras and DVR missing. I immediately informed school principal Daljit Kaur about the incident. After getting information, the principal, along with other teachers, reached the spot,” said Singh. During investigation by the school authorities, it came to fore that the duo committed the theft. The authorities informed the police about the incident, following which a case was registered against the accused yesterday. Investigating officer ASI Dharminder Singh said Sandeep also had a criminal past as three cases, including drug smuggling, were already registered against him. The duo committed thefts at government schools in Amargarh Kaler and Kaunke Kalan. Raids were being conducted to nab them.
