Paramjit Singh of Kila Barun told the police that Kuldeep Singh of Chabbewal, along with his wife Parvinder Kaur, has allegedly cheated him of Rs 45 lakh in the name of selling land. He alleged that the accused had taken monay but didn't register the sale deed. OC 3 BOOKED FOR SNATCHING CHAIN Hoshiarpur: The police have registered a case against three for snatching a gold chain. Satnam Singh of Islamabad told the police that on October 12, he was standing with his friend at a stall near improvement trust office. His locality resident Vicky, Ranjeet Kumar and Harminder Singh, came there with three other accomplices. They attacked and injured him and allegedly snatched his gold chain. OC THREE ARRESTED FOR GAMBLING Hoshiarpur: The police have arrested three persons for gambling and recovered Rs 14,040 from them. The Model Town police arrested Hemraj of Patiala and Mohit Kumar of Akash Colony and recovered Rs 5,200 from them. The police arrested Akashdeep, alias Mikki, of Basant Nagar and recovered Rs 7,840 . Separate cases under the gambling act have been registered. OC FOUR BOOKED FOR MURDER BID Phagwara: The police have booked four persons on the charges of attempt to murder and firing. Mam Hussain of Chitti village complained to the police that he was returning home after meeting his relative at Hairan village on October 19 night on a motorcycle. Four unidentified persons opened fire at him with an intention to kill him. He said one gunshot pierced his thigh and another hit his motorcycle. oc MAN DIES MYSTERIOUSLY Phagwara: A 40-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Lakhveer Singh of Dherian village. The father of the deceased told the police that his son first consumed liquor and then took his medicine and died. SARABJIT SINGH 1,799 cops sacrificed lives since 1981: DGP Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 21 Paying tributes to the martyrs of the police on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day at PAP grounds here, DGP Gaurav Yadav said 1,799 police personnel had laid down their lives since September 1981. The Punjab Police chief said, “It is because of these martyrs that we all are enjoying freedom.” He said the police were known for their bravery, courage and successfully rooting out militancy. They would continue to work harder towards maintaining peace and communal harmony in the border state, he asserted. The DGP also met the families of martyrs and listened to them sympathetically, assuring them of support and cooperation from the government as well as the police. Among the families who met Yadav was that of slain Constable Mandeep Singh, who was gunned down by extortionists targeting cloth mer- chant Timmy Chawla in Nakodar two years ago. His wife Mandeep Kaur got emotional while introducing her three-year-old son back to October 21, 1959, when a patrol party of the CRPF, led by SI Karam Singh, was ambushed by the Chinese forces at Hot Springs in Ladakh and 10 jawans were killed. ■ Recognising that fighting at 16,000 ft altitude in extremely cold conditions and it needed the rare courage, the ITBP sends a representative party of all police forces to Hot Springs, Ladakh, every year to pay homage to the martyrs, who laid down their lives in 1959, while guarding the frontiers. ■ Since then, on October 21 every year, commemoration parades are held in all police units as a mark of respect to martyrs, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Jalandhar, October 21 With an aim to curb the sale of spurious or adulterated food materials in Jalandhar, the Health Department has carried out over 50 inspections last month. These include inspections on sweets shops, food stocking godowns, factories and sampling of retail items. A department official said as per instructions from the state authorities, various drives were being carried out to curb the sale of spurious food items. However, during raids since the Navratris, no largescale seizures have been made by the department. Since the past weeks, inspections have been carried out at a factory at Bhogpur and two others at Dana Mandi and Mithu Basti. At the Dana Mandi and Mithu Basti inspection on October 2, a ‘petha’ factory had been inspected where samples of the sweet had also been taken. A food security official said, “Drives are being conducted from time to time and many samplings are also being held. A drive was also initiated to promote the use of cooking oil and stress on the fact that not more than 25 compounds must be present in the oil.” Officials said sampling of mustard oil, silver leaf, cooking oil, milk and milk products had been held and will be continued in the coming days. Gang staging fake accidents to extort money active in city Raids on to arrest double Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 21 A new gang extorting money by staging fake road accidents has come to light, causing concern among city residents already grappling with rising incidents of snatching and thefts. The gang, allegedly targeting vulnerable drivers, especially the elderly and women, uses minor collisions to intimidate and extort money from their victims. Prof Kamlesh Singh Duggal, Officer on Special Duty at GNDU College, Ladowali Road, shared his experience with Jalandhar Tribune, saying two days ago, while driving near Press Club Chowk, a man deliberately rammed into his car from behind and falsely accused him of hitting him. Recognizing the man from a previous encounter, he quickly tried to take his photo, but the miscreant fled the scene. “I had a similar encounter with this man a few months ago near Nakodar Chowk,” Prof Duggal said. “He claimed that he was injured and demanded Rs 1,000. When I hesitated, he threatened to call his community and block the road. To avoid any trouble, I gave him Rs 250”, he added. Rajinder Singh, another Docs on strike over ‘violence’ Jalandhar, October 21 The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA), Jalandhar, has condemned an incident of alleged violence against doctors on duty that took place on the night of October 19 at the Civil Hospital Jalandhar. Expressing cconcern over the safety of doctors, the PCMSA also suspended OPD services at the hospital today. They said the protest will continue until an FIR is registered. The PCMSA said the violence reportedly began by a reporter from a local newspaper who targeted doctors. The Medical Superintendent (MS) has assured support to the doctors.
