Jaswant Singh of Mahitpur told the police that thieves stole motor wires from his village. The police arrested one suspect with the help of villagers, while his two accomplices managed to escape. The police said the arrested suspect was identified as Kishan Kumar of Phagwara. The police said stolen cable and cutting tools were recovered from storage compartment of the two-wheeler of the suspect. A case was registered in this connection and probe initiated into the matter, the police said. OC TWO CELLPHONES SEIZED FROM JAIL Hoshiarpur: The Central Jail authorities have recovered two cellphones during search operation on the prison premises. After receiving a complaint, the police registered two cases in this connection. Central Jail Assistant Superintendent Sukhwinder Ram said during a search operation, a touch screen mobile phone hidden in ground of Block No. 13 was recovered. While in the second incident, Assistant Superintendent Kulwinder Singh said during surprise checking, a battery along with a keypad mobile phone, was recovered from a dustbin in Block No. 22. After registering cases, police initiated probe into the matter. OC Cong MLAs allege DSP threatening councillors ahead of Shahkot MC president’s election Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 18 Congress leaders, including Shahkot MLA Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh on Saturday evening held a protest outside the office of the Shahkot DSP , while alleging that the police was harassing the newly-elected party councillors ahead of the Monday’s election for the Shahkot Municipal Committee (MC) president. Laddi and Rana took to public address system to convey to the DSP that his alleged threats to frighten the Congress councillors would not work. The Shahkot MC elections were held on December 21 in which nine councillors of the Congress and four of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had won. A meeting was called for January 16 to elect the MC president, but it could not be held as Shahkot SDM Shubhi Angra reportedly fell ill. Laddi said, “The election was to be held at 11 am. At 9.30 am. Investigating officer (IO) Balkar Singh said the suspect was identified as Hansa Singh of Dharme Dian Chhana village. District Development and Panchayat Officer and Baghela village panchayat had complained to the Jalandhar (Rural) SSP that the suspect had encroached on the panchayat land in the village. The IO said a case under Section 13-A of the Punjab Village Common Lands (Regulation) Act, 1961, was registered against suspect and others in April 2022. OC MAN HELD FOR OPENING FIRE Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a Jalandhar resident on the charges of firing and endangering life. Investigating Officer (IO) Nirmal Singh said the suspect was identified as Manish Kumar, alias Manni Mithapurai, a resident of Arora Colony, Jalandhar city. Arun Kumar, a resident of Kangana village, had complained to the police that the suspect had opened fire at the main gate of his uncle's house on August 29 night and put his life in danger. The IO said a case under Section 125 of the BNS and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against suspect. Nakodar DSP Sukhpal Singh said the arrested suspect was identified as Jarnail, alias Jaila, a resident of Jagir village. TRIBUNE PHOTO City police crackdown on traffic rule violators, issue 87 challans Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 18 The Commissionerate Police concluded its three-day traffic enforcement drive here today. As many as 87 challans were issued, seven vehicles impounded and over 480 vehicles inspected during the drive. “The drive, aimed to tackle traffic violations and enhance road safety, demonstrated proactive approach of the police to maintain order on roads in the city,” said officials of the Police Department. They said the operation involved strategically placed checkpoints in high-traffic and commercial areas, where police personnel rigorously checked vehicles for compliance with the traffic laws. In all, 16 challans were issued for triple riding on motorcycles, 15 for helmetless riding, 17 for vehicles without number plates, 17 for black-tinted windows, eight for modified Bullet motorcycle silencers and seven for driving without a licence. Seven vehicles were impounded as their owners failed to present valid documents of policemen on duty. The drive was led by the Area Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and ACP (Traffic), with support from Station House Officers (SHOs) and Emergency Response System (ERS) zone in-charges. The ERS team played a key role in ensuring smooth operations, while the Field Media Team (FMT) documented the campaign and conducted awareness drives to educate citizens on the importance of following traffic rules. “This initiative aimed to address common yet dangerous violations that pose a risk to public safety. By targeting high-risk behaviour, the Jalandhar Police reinforced its commitment to fostering safer roads and a culture of responsible driving,” said Mahesh Kumar, ACP (Traffic). Giving information, sources in the Police Department said a suspicious bike was stopped at a naka by the police. Upon inspecting the two-wheeler, 500 grams of heroin was recovered. The police detained two bike riders identified as Navdeep Singh, alias Joban, and Jaskaran Singh, alias Karan, both residents of Faridwal, Makhu police station, Ferozepur. Two envelopes containing 500 grams of heroin (250 grams from each envelope) along with a 7.65 mm coun- try-made pistol with five live cartridges were recovered from the duo. These envelopes were examined under the supervision of the DSP Sultanpur Lodhi sub, division. A Splendor motorcycle (bearing registration No. PB 09 AA 5538) was also recovered from the two suspects. After several months wait, the suspects failed to arrange the USA visa for the complainant and also did not return his money. Those booked were identified as Ashok Kumar and his son Lishok Kumar, residents of Basti Gujja, and Mohammad Sufian, a resident of Malerkotla. During investigation, the police verified allegations levelled by the complainant against three suspects and found evidence against them. A case under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and Section 13 of Punjab Travel Professions Regulation Act was registered against three suspects. — TNS 3 booked for theft Phagwara, January 18 The Nakodar Sadar have booked three persons for stealing diamond, golden and silver jewellery and cash from a house. Investigating officer (IO) Lovleen Kumar said the suspects were identified as Gurchetan Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Surjit Singh, all of Patti Purewal, Shahkar village. Ram Parkash of the same village told the police that suspects stole jewellery and cash from his house. A case was registered against three suspects. — OC Bike, scooter stolen Phagwara, January 18 A bike bearing registration number PB-09AB-1411, which was parked near Convent School, has been stolen. Bike owner Jashanpreet, a resident of Thakaraki village, told the police that he went inside school after parking his bike. He said when he came out of the school, he found that his bike was stolen. In the second incident, an Activa scooter was stolen from Eastwood village in Phagwara. Scooter owner Naresh told the police that he, along with his wife went to Eastwood village food joints, after parking his Activa in a parking lot. He said when they came out, their bike was missing from the parking lot. Two cases were registered by the police. — OC Man run over by train Phagwara, January 18 A middle-aged man was run over by a train near Phagwara railway station on Friday night. The Government Railway Police said the deceased was identified as Lovepreet of Baba Gadhia locality, Phagwara.
