The suspects were identified as ASI Bua Singh (55), posted at the Kailash police post, Sukhwinder Singh, alias Gagan (45), of Bhamian Kalan and Avinderpal Singh Bunty (57) of LIG Colony, Jamalpur, all friends of the victim. ADCP Mandeep Singh, ACP Industrial-A Jasbinder Singh, SHO, Moti Nagar, inspector Amritpal Singh, addressed a press conference in this regard on Saturday. On April 21, Ranjit Kaur, wife of Late Sohan Singh, resident of MIG Colony, Jamalpur Awana, reached the Moti Nagar police station and informed that her son Gurjinder Singh (aged about 43 years), who had gone for a walk in the park on April 16 evening, did not return home. A thorough search was made but he was not found. On the complaint of the woman and on the suspicion that her son could have been kept under wrongful confinement by some persons, a case was registered on April 21. Police officials said when the police carried out indepth investigation of the case, it was found that the missing man, Gurjinder Singh, who was consuming alcohol with his friends in the evening on April 16, died on the spot after being shot with a licensed revolver of the ASI, one of his friends. The interrogation of Avinderpal, Sukhwinder, ASI Bua Singh revealed that after Gurjinder died on the spot, these persons conspired among themselves and put the body of the victim in a silver Honda Amaze car and dumped it on the road leading to the canal near Morinda, Rupnagar, the same night. In the case, the three suspects have been arrested and the car used during the crime has been seized. The police have added murder charge to the case. Byelection: Six file nomination papers on Day 6 Tribune News Service Nikhil Bhardwaj Ludhiana, May 31 On the sixth day of the filing nominations for the byelection to the Ludhiana West seat of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, six nomination papers have been filed. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEC) Sibin C said on Saturday that Jatinder Kumar Sharma, candidate from the National Lok Sewa Party, submitted his nomination papers. In addition, five Independent candidates Paramjit Singh Bharaj, Albert Dua, Kamal Pawar, Rajesh Sharma and Neetu have also filed their nominations. He said a total of 14 nomination papers had been filed so far. Nomination papers could not be submitted on June 1 due to a holiday. June 2 was the last date for filing the same while the scrutiny of the nomination papers would be conducted on June 3. A mock drill under ‘Operation Shield’ was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner S Viraj Tidke at the administrative complex here on Saturday. ADC (D) Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu said coordinated steps were being taken to prepare members of various departments concerned with crisis management. The initiative was taken keeping in view the need for capacity building among each government official for dealing with any adverse situation following the ongoing tension between the two countries. He doesn’t believe in holding meetings in huge gatherings, rather he has faith in campaigning in small groups. Ghuman said when a politician holds a large gathering, it doesn’t prove beneficial as one could only indulge in a oneway communication and listeners could not discuss their personal issues with the former. The police also recovered four motorcycles and seven mobile phones from the suspect. The motorcycles were stolen by the suspect from city areas and the mobiles were snatched by him from city residents recently. The suspect was identified as Anuj, alias Kaka (29), a resident of Mundian Kalan. Jamalpur SHO Inspector Balwinder Kaur in a statement issued stated that a police team was conducting a patrolling in the area when a tip-off was received that the suspect committed motorcycle thefts in the area and used the stolen vehicles to commit mobile snatchings in the city. The SHO said a police team conducted a raid after verifying the location of the suspect and nabbed him from the Jamalpur area. During preliminary questioning, he admitted that he committed over 12 incidents of vehicle theft and mobile snatching. Admn holds first randomisation of employees on election duty Ludhiana, May 31 The district administration on Saturday conducted the first randomisation of polling staff for the upcoming Ludhiana West byelection in the presence of District Election Officer (DEO) Himanshu Jain. As per an official statement, the randomisation process was carried out at the NIC office using dedicated DISE software. “The aim was to classify over 1,552 employees from the Central and state governments, banks and public sector undertakings, who have been assigned several duties during elections. The process was conducted as per guidelines of the EC to ensure fairness and impartiality in the selection of polling staff,” it said. “The randomisation process was aimed at assigning duties to staff for the polling to take place on June 19 at 194 polling stations, including two auxilary, under the Ludhiana West jurisdiction. A separate randomisation process will be held for the counting, to be held on June 23,” it said. The DEO reiterated that the administration was duty-bound to ensure the polling and counting held in a transparent manner. He said the administration had put elaborate arrangements in place for the purpose. As many as 194 polling stations, including two auxiliary, across 66 locations have been established to facilitate voting. Prominent among those present on the occasion included ADCs Rohit Gupta, Shikha Bhagat, election tehsildar Barjinder Singh Bagga and ADIO Sanjay Sheokand. — TNS
