The deceased Avtar Singh had reportedly been in a relationship with Suman, a widow, for several years. Singh had gone to Suman's house to attend the birthday celebration of her daughter. An altercation took place between Singh and Suman. The deceased was found hanging. Suman has been arrested. OC WOMAN NABBED WITH 6 GM HEROIN Phagwara: The police arrested a woman from Dograwwal village under the NDPS Act after recovering heroin from her possession at a naka. A team, led by ASI Rajinder Kumar, was conducting checks near Dograwwal when a woman Paramjit Kaur attempted to discard a packet into roadside grass. The police recovered the packet which was found to contain 6 gram of heroin.OC YOUTH HELD WITH INTOXICATING PILLS Phagwara: The police have arrested a youth for the alleged possession of intoxicating tablets. A police patrol team received a tip-off from a local that a man was engaged in the illegal trade of intoxicating tablets. The team spotted the suspect carrying a bag. On seeing the police, the youth allegedly threw the bag and attempted to flee, but was quickly apprehended. He was identified as Badal Singh of Fauji Colony, Sultanpur Lodhi. A search of the bag led to the recovery of 1,010 tablets. OC TWO BOOKED FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The police have booked a father-son duo on the charge of outraging the modesty of a woman. The accused has been identified as Manjit Singh, a resident of Sangowal village, and his son Arashi. OC Torrential rain leaves houses, shops in city’s posh localities under water Shopkeepers incur losses worth crores | Showroom basements have 12 feet water Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 1 Early morning torrential rain spelt doom for city residents, especially for residents and showroom owners of posh Model Town, New Jawahar Nagar, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Urban Estate and Defence Colony. Residents of these colonies said they had never seen the kind of waterlogging that happened this morning. Rainwater entered the houses, cafes and showrooms, leading to a loss of crores of rupees of the owners. The residents said they were awake since 2 am when it started raining heavily. By 2:30 am, rainwater started accumulating on roads and within minutes, it entered their premises. Owing to the poor drainage system, several showrooms in the basements of Model Town had 812 feet of water by 3 am. Jaspreet Singh, owner of an electronic goods showroom, is learnt to have suffered a loss of over Rs 1 crore as all his gadgets, including mobile phones, speakers and air purifiers, were found to be floating in 6-8 feet water by the time he reached his shop. “I came to the shop at 3 am and realised that the damage had been done. The waterlogging in the shop has left me devastated. I do not know how and when I shall be able to recover from it”, he kept saying to himself. Samrat, owner of Rave Cafe, said 5-7 feet water had accumulated in his cafe’s basement. All my furniture, coffee machines and other gadgets were in water. “It has been eight hours since I have been trying to get suction pumps to pull out water. It is a huge loss for me. Poor drainage and accumulation of rainwater in front of my cafe led to the trouble”, he rued. Shopkeepers in the Model Town market were seen trying to drain out water mechanically and put up bags of sand to prevent more water from entering their premises. Even the official houses of Mayor and Municipal Corporation Commissioner in Model Town had rainwater. Rajiv Duggal, 1.10L cusecs of water released in Sutlej, nearby villages alerted Tribune News Service Jalandhar/Nawanshahr, September 1 The district administration of Jalandhar and Nawanshahr have alerted villagers living along the Sutlej following the release of 1.14 lakh cusecs water from Ropar on Monday evening. The released water is expected to reach Jalandhar by Tuesday early morning. DC Dr Himanshu Aggarwal appealed to people in low-lying and floodprone areas to avoid going near river banks, besides shifting to relief camps. He further said coupled with other drain water, nearly 1.25 to1.5 lakh cusecs of water may pass through Jalandhar. He said the government had already made elaborate arrangements to prevent any flood-like situation and assured them that sufficient relief camps, food supplies, fodder, and medicines were in place. Over 54 relief centres have been set up across the district to facilitate people living in flood-prone areas. He also appealed to people to cooperate with the authorities in rescue measures. He said a state-level flood control room has been set up in Jalandhar where people can report emergencies or seek assistance by calling 01812240064. A resident of Defence Colony, Congress leader Angad Dutta, said rainwater entered several houses and shops in the locality. He blamed MC officials for their lackadaisical approach. The shopkeepers of Central Town and Mai Hiran Gate too complained of rainwater damaging their items. The Jalandhar bus stand had two feet deep water in the parking lot. Even the platforms where commuters wait for buses had water flowing all over. Most government offices had rainwater seeping in through roofs. Power shutdown The MC authorities said they had received several complaints of buildings getting collapsed. Several trees have got uprooted, blocking roads. The PSPCL lines also got snapped and power remained disrupted in the city for five to eight hours. Several localities, including Old Baradari, Makhdoompura, Urban Estate and Model Town, had no power for several hours. Vehicles suffered huge damage Trucks, cars, etc suffered a huge damage. The vehicles got stuck in the muck on roads. A BMW car could not restart for over an hour after it stopped in the Model Town market. A car suffered huge damaged as a wall along which it was parked in Kabir Nagar fell upon it. DC takes stock of situation DC Dr Himanshu Aggarwal visited various parts of the city to take stock of the situation. He was accompanied by MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi. The DC revealed that more than 200 complaints of water entering homes and basements had been received at the flood control room. The rainwater has been discharged into the Kala Sanghia drain, which further flows into the Sutlej. MLA Pargat on toes “At such a critical time, people do not need excuses — they need reassurance and urgent action. I stand firmly with my people and demand that the government and district administration act immediately,” said Jalandhar Cantt Congress MLA Pargat Singh as he kept going around whole day in the city in various localities offering them a helping hand. He said 15–20 villages were submerged overnight in his constituency as thousands of acres of crops were destroyed, and homes were inundated. With the Pholriwal treatment plant shutting down, urban Jalandhar also faced waterlogging, he added. In New Jawahar Nagar, he helped a woman push her scooter out of flood waters. In Model Town, he supervised pumping operations to clear basements and homes. Taking stock of situation at Dhussi bandh sites in the district, DC Ankurjeet Singh on Monday visited Talwandi Sabo, Tajowal and Pandrawal Burj Tehal Singh where he directed the officials to stay vigilant. Interacting with residents of villages at the bundh sites, the DC said the teams were deputed to further strengthen the bank of Sutlej. He said the flow in the Sutlej along the district was between 40,000-45,000 cusecs, which had now crossed 90,000 cusecs. He said a 24X7 district-level control room was established at the District Administrative Complex with telephone number 01823-220645, where any information could be given. Relief, rescue ops intensify in Doaba Bundhs to be strengthened Our Correspondent Phagwara, September 1 With large parts of the Doaba reeling under the impact of the incessant rains and flooding, the administration, political leaders, and social organisations have stepped up relief and rescue measures to safeguard lives, restore normalcy, and provide urgent support to affected families. Donation to CM’s Relief Fund Nayan Chhabra, Doaba zone coordinator of the War Against Drugs campaign and chairman of the Youth Development Board, contributed Rs 50,000 to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The cheque was handed over to DC Amit Kumar Panchal in the presence of Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and other dignitaries. Chhabra assured full support to floodhit families. AAP leaders visit villages AAP Phagwara Assembly constituency in-charge Harnoor Singh (Harji) Mann visited rain-affected villages of Bohani, Ranipur, Duggan, Jagpalpur, and Madhopur, where he inspected damaged houses and expressed solidarity with victims. Mann said the government was committed to providing compensation for damage to houses, crops, and livestock. The leaders arranged a fodder trolley from Madhopur to assist cattle stranded in floodhit areas of Bholath. Several sarpanches and youth lead- ers accompanied the visit. Medical teams deployed in Kapurthala Amid concerns of disease outbreak, the Health Department has intensified medical services in the flood-hit Kapurthala. Acting under the directions of Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh and supervision of DC Panchal, four Rapid Response Teams and 12 medical teams have been deployed on the ground. Civil Surgeon Dr Rajiv Parashar said special medical wards with 24 beds have been set up across Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, and Bholath. The department, in coordination with NGOs and the IMA, has distributed 200 mosquito nets, ensured stock of essential medicines, including anti-rabies and c m y b anti-snake vaccines, and deployed ambulances for emergency care. once water recedes: Ministers Mundian, Bhagat visit flood-hit villages to review situation Ration supply in Sultanpur Lodhi Our Correspondent In Sultanpur Lodhi, the administration has focused on door-to-door relief through SDRF boats. Under the supervision of SDM Alka Kalia, four teams delivered around 250 ration kits, alongside sanitary pads, mosquito nets, and tarpaulins. DC Panchal said the administration was reaching even those reluctant to leave lowlying houses, urging them to shift to safer relief camps. Phagwara, September 1 Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat assured residents of the flood-hit mand region in Sultanpur Lodhi that the government will ensure the strengthening of embankments in the area once flood waters recede. The ministers said a report on the measures will be submitted to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann so that people, who have been repeatedly facing devastation due to floods, can be provided permanent relief. The two ministers, who have been deputed by the Chief Minister to oversee relief and rehabilitation works in the flood-affected areas of Kapurthala district, visited several inundated villages in the mand. Travelling on tractors to reach marooned settlements, they interacted with affected families and assured them of all possible support from the government. During their visit, the ministers directed the DC to ensure immediate availability of ration, tarpaulin sheets, and boats as per the demands by villagers. Responding to the urgent need to protect the link road near Yusufpur Darewal, they ordered the dispatch of sand through tippers and deployment of JCB machines to prevent further damage. Mundian said Punjab has suffered significant losses due to this natural disaster. However, he added that the government is committed to compensating people through a special girdawari, which will be carried out swiftly. For this purpose, special tehsildars have already been appointed in the floodaffected regions. The ministers also distributed ration and essential supplies among residents of Mand Inderpur, Yusufpur Darewal, and neighboring villages located along the border of Ferozepur, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar districts.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
