Husband of block samiti member arrested in opium seizure case Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 6 The Kapurthala police have arrested two persons in an NDPS case concerning the seizure of opium from a Biharbased resident. The arrested persons have been identified as Bihar resident Guddan Kumar and youth leader Goldy Dhanju. Goldy Dhanju is the husband of Baljinder Kaur, a block samiti member in Sultanpur Lodhi. Baljinder was backed by local MLA Rana Inder Partap. An owner of a private hotel in Sultanpur Lodhi, Dhanju, was arrested last night based on the testimony of alleged opium trafficker Guddan Kumar, who was arrested with 823 gm of opium from a private hotel on Friday evening. In his statement to the police, Guddan alleged that he was going to supply the narcotic to Dhanju. A case has been registered against Guddan Kumar, Sultanpur Lodhi-based Goldy Dhanju and Chapra (Bihar) resident Vinod Kumar, under Sections 18 and 29 of the NDPS Act at the Sultanpur Lodhi police station. DSP Sultanpur Lodhi Dheerendra Verma said, “Opium weighing 20 gm of opium was also seized from Goldy Dhanju’s residence in raids last night. His remand is being obtained and further probe is on in the matter.” Kapurthala, June 6 Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Ludhiana who recently returned from a jail in Mauritius, has alleged that travel agents are running a largescale human trafficking racket under the guise of tourist travel. Speaking at Sultanpur Lodhi, where he arrived with his family to thank Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal, Jaswinder said that innocent Punjabis are being trapped and exploited abroad by unscrupulous travel agents. He explained that he had travelled to Mauritius in January last year, where a visa is issued upon arrival at the airport. According to him, travel agents exploit this facility to lure people overseas. Jaswinder Singh stated that travel agents specif- ically target tourists. He further revealed that he traveled to Mauritius on a tourist visa in January 2025. Upon arrival, the company management confiscated his passport. The travel agent repeatedly assured him that his tourist visa would be converted into a work visa. As long as the company had work available, he was employed; however, once the work ended, he was dismissed. The company then refused to return his passport, leaving him undocumented and in an overstayed status. During this period, local police detained him and he lost contact with his family for nearly 15 to 20 days. According to available information, the company retained his passport throughout his employment and kept extending his tourist visa for six months while mak- ing him work 14-hour shifts daily. He was also denied one month’s salary, amounting to approximately Rs 30,000. After learning about his difficult situation, Jaswinder Singh’s family contacted Seechewal on May 24, who immediately took up the matter, wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs, and continuously pursued the case. Due to Seechewal’s prompt intervention and persistent efforts, the Indian Embassy acted swiftly and secured Jaswinder Singh’s release from detention. The embassy also facilitated the return of his passport and ensured his safe return to India within a week. After returning home, Jaswinder Singh said that without timely assistance, it would have been extremely difficult for him to return to India. attackers didn’t retreat at this. Lovepreet allegedly attempted to snatch the government weapon. Acting in self-defence, two rounds were fired in response by the constable. The shots struck Lovepreet Singh in a thigh, injuring him.” The SSP also alleged that Lovepreet’s family initially tried to obstruct the process of immediately shifting him to hospital. Eventually admitted, he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The SSP said Lovepreet, his sister, brother Mandeep Singh and father Pippal Singh were all facing multiple cases against them and some had also served time in prison. Activist Tarsem Peter, part of the dharna against the police, said, “The statements given by the SSP in the Lovepreet case are one-sided. While Lovepreet was wanted in a case, and the police charges of former cases against Lovepreet are true, why did the police hurry to file a case against the family? No FIR has been registered against officials who shot Lovepreet. Rather, the victim’s family members have been booked in the FIR. The police must also book the cops involved in the matter rather than giving them the clean chit.” Anti-dengue campaign launched Tribune News Service Jalandhar June 6 Under the guidelines of Civil Surgeon Dr Rajesh Garg, the Health Department Jalandhar launched a “Fight dengue every Friday” campaign across the district. The protest was led by District Congress President Rajinder Beri and Jalandhar West constituency in-charge Surinder Kaur. They were taking part in a protest against the government for “misusing” state police to jail Congress worker Arshdeep Singh at Tanda in Hoshiarpur over the charges of “sacrilege of broom” last Saturday. The police tried to stop them from reaching the protest venue and also from disintegrating the “broom” during which a scuffle-like situation also occurred. The workers said they were pushed and forced backwards during their peaceful protest. During the police barricading, a heated argument took place between Angad Dutta and SHO Division No. 5. The Congress leaders said the Punjab Government had strayed from its priorities and was attempting to suppress political dissent through the use of police and administrative machinery. The Aam Aadmi Party government Stopped by police from disintegrating ‘broom’ should not forget that one of its major promises to the people of Punjab was to ensure justice and punish those responsible for incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. However, instead of taking concrete action in these sensitive matters, the government is busy registering criminal cases against Congress workers over an issue related to a political party’s election symbol. “The people of Punjab voted for justice and accountability, not for political vendetta. It is very unfortunate that instead of fulfilling its promises, the government is focused on targeting workers of the opposition party,” they said. The Congress also strongly condemned the alleged brutal lathi-charge by the Punjab Police on ITItrained lineman job aspirants who were protesting a day earlier regarding their demands. Mahila Congress national coordinator and councillor Dr Jasleen Sethi strongly condemned the police forcefully stopping and pushing the workers during the Congress demonstration in Basti Nau. She said the Congress had come to hold a peaceful protest and to reject the case filed over the alleged desecration of the “broom”.
