INBRIEF THIEVES STEAL CASH, JEWELLERY Hoshiarpur: Three motorcycle-borne thieves stole around Rs 6 lakh in cash and gold jewellery weighing six to seven tolas from a house at Malkowal village in the Beit area of Garhshankar. The incident took place in just 12 minutes and was captured on CCTV cameras. House owner Avtar Singh said no one was present at the house at the time of the theft. OC YOUTH HELD WITH 100-GM HEROIN Kapurthala: A youth was arrested by the Kapurthala CIA staff with 100 gm of heroin. According to CIA in-charge Raman Kumar, ASI Sukhchain Singh, along with his police team, was patrolling near Subhanpur Road when they noticed the accused, who was riding a scooter. The police team stopped him for checking, during which they recovered 100 grams of heroin. The accused was identified as Varinder Singh, a resident of Amritsar. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. OC 23 file papers for Hoshiarpur civic body poll Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, June 23 Twenty-three persons filed their papers on the second day of the nomination process for the Hoshiarpur Municipal Corporation elections. So far, 28 people have filed nominations. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Nikas Kumar said those wanting to contest the polls could file the papers till June 25. He said the scrutiny of papers would be conducted on June 26. The final list of eligible candidates will be released on June 27 after the completion of the withdrawal process. Poll authorities flag 5.6 lakh voters for scrutiny under SIR Rishika Kriti Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 23 The election authorities have identified nearly 5.6 lakh voters for scrutiny in the district ahead of the door-to-door verification to be taken up from June 25 under the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The number constitutes 34 per cent of around 16.49 lakh voters in the district. According to officials, the SIR is a comprehensive exercise undertaken by the Election Commission to update electoral rolls on the basis of 2003 data. The process involves doorto-door verification by boothlevel officers (BLOs) to confirm voter details, correct errors, remove duplicate or ineligible entries and ensure that only eligible voters remain on the final list. In Jalandhar, of the 5.6 lakh voters flagged by the poll authorities, around 2.81 lakh are unmapped voters whose records could not be properly linked with the existing electoral database. There were discrepancies in names, age and family information of 2.82 lakh voters when compared with the 2003 electoral rolls. These cases will be verified during household visits by BLOs. Firing outside Kapurthala restaurant Ashok Kaura Phagwara, June 23 A firing incident was reported from outside a restaurant in Sultanpur Lodhi on Tuesday, creating panic in the area. Purported CCTV footage of the incident surfaced online, showing two motorcycle-borne men involved in the act. The incident took place outside Barista Restaurant. Confirming it, DSP Dhirendra Verma said that the matter was being investigated seriously. He said police teams were analysing the CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify those involved. According to sources, the restaurant owners had received extortion demands a few days ago. Though it is being claimed that one shot was fired, there has been no official confirmation regarding the exact nature of the incident. A source said an Instagram account operating under the name “chan_dhillon307” posted a message taking responsibility for the incident. The post said the act was carried out as there was no response to the extortion calls. However, neither the police nor any official has verified the authenticity of this claim.The DSP said no written complaint had been received in the matter so far. Man burnt to death as moving car catches fire Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 23 A man was burnt alive as the car in which he was travelling caught fire near Pholriwal village here on Tuesday morning. Seeing the vehicle in flames, villagers tried to rescue the victim but were unsuccessful as the car was locked from inside. They immediately informed the police and the fire brigade. Teams from Sadar police station reached the spot and records of the car online. The police said the car was registered in the name of Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Chakoke village in Nadala, Kapurthala. Upon investigation, it was found that he had sold off the vehicle. Sadar police station SHO Sanjeev Kumar Couldn’t be rescued as vehicle was locked from inside said the preliminary investigation suggested that the fire started due to the explosion of a body spray can. Due to the explosion, the victim, Parbhat Singh, lost control over the car and hit a pole before it caught fire. Since the car was locked from inside, the driver could not be rescued. The SHO said the body was severely burnt, making identification difficult. “Through the car agency, we got to know that the driver was a 30-year-old dairy owner of Basti Bawa Khel in Jalandhar. His family has been contacted for completing all formalities,” he said. Defeated candidate seeks probe into ‘fake votes’ Santokhpura firing case accused Our Correspondent Garhshankar, June 23 An unsuccessful candidate in the Garhshankar Municipal Council poll has served a legal notice on the Punjab State Election Commission, demanding a probe into the alleged creation of fake votes to ensure the victory of his rival. Kulwinder Sangha, who had contested from Ward No. 4, alleged that fake votes were created in the recently concluded MC poll to ensure the victory of Prince, the winning candidate and nephew of Garhshankar MLA and Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Rouri. The notice seeks action under Sections 17 and 31 of Serves legal notice on state Election Commission the Representation of the People Act and Section 217 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It warns that if the Election Commission fails to act, the matter will be taken before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. A list of 55 persons has been attached to the notice. According to the allegations, they were already registered as voters in other villages or wards but were added to the voter list of Ward No. 4 in Garhshankar. The notice points out that many of them were shown as residing at “House No. 0” in the electoral records. It is alleged that these individuals voted in the elections. Sangha stated that he had submitted a written complaint to the Punjab State Election Commission on May 12, highlighting the issue. ‘Another plaint lodged’ He said a social and RTI activist had also lodged a complaint on May 20, alleging large-scale fake voter registrations in Garhshankar. However, according to him, no action was taken on their complaints. Sangha claimed that the winning candidate, his parents, brother and sister-inlaw were also registered in Ward No. 4 only a few days before the elections. According to the notice, the list of disputed voters includes relatives of MLA Jai Krishan Rouri, including three uncles, five aunts and several other persons from Rouri village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district. It also alleges that the names of the MLA’s four sisters were added to Ward No. 4 despite their actual residences being located several kilometres away. Jalandhar, June 23 The Vigilance Bureau has apprehended a Food and Civil Supplies Department inspector and a junior auditor in a corruption case. Inspector Rajneesh Rampal, posted at Bhogpur, and junior auditor Manav Bhanot have been arrested on the charge of accepting bribe. Bureau officials said the arrests were made following a complaint lodged by a resident of Cheema Mandi, Sunam. The complaint was lodged on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Line. The move comes days after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the ADC would be vested with powers exercised by a deputy commissioner in a district. He had said this at a Lok Milni programme after local residents demanded a district status for the subdivision. To grant arms licences, look after law and order, supervise disposal of revenue cases Following the decision, several key administrative works would be taken care of at the subdivision level, providing relief to local residents who will no longer be required to go to the Kapurthala district headquarters for most services.
